Concerning different Taito games have these issues it is hard to believe this is the result of laziness or oversight. It is scam.

As stated above. I am totally cool with DLC on day 1, episodic games or whatever. But the developer/ publisher should be honest. The trial should only promise features that are in the actual game.

I also blame Microsoft. They have guidelines for everything but accept false advertising.

It is dicey, but it's something that has been done since the beginning of XBLA.

The alternative is each Taito game being 15$. The downside is that some people don't even care for the extra stuff. Like for example, my buddy and I got Arkanoid. He never bought the DLC because, not only does he not know about it, he's still trying to beat the two packs they gave you with the game (episodes 1 and 2).

In the case of Arkanoid, you got plenty of bang for your buck. With Qix, you most certainly do not. And it seems they are very well aware, because they made the achievements multiplayer focused in a very poor attempt to extend the games value.

Personally, I'm cool with it only because A. I knew this going into the purchase, B. Taito is one of the few companies making quality XBLA games at the moment. I'm having a lot of fun going for high scores in the two packs, and I plan on getting the two expansions.

I can totally understand your frustration, though. It is false advertisement, and it's probably the result of laziness or an oversight that the help menu discusses DLC modes.

Lead and Gold Hands-On Preview

http://previews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/2477/Lead-and-Gold-Gangs-of-the-Wild-West/p1/

Some representatives from Swedish developer Fatshark came by the TeamXbox offices for a surprise visit recently, bringing with them a bunch of laptops, each of them loaded with the forthcoming Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West. The game will be released on PC and Xbox Live Arcade in first-quarter 2010.

While we didn’t get to see the XBLA version, we not only saw the game on PC, but were invited to sit and play against each other for a while. The laptops were equipped with Xbox 360 controllers, so we got a good feel for what it’ll be like on console. We’re pretty excited by what the third-person shooter offers to players.

Lead and Gold is a multiplayer game designed for five-on-five, team vs. team action. It’s a class-based game, with four “archetypes” as the character choices: Blaster, Deputy, Gunslinger and Trapper. In actuality, all of them are “gunslingers,” but each has a different default weapon as well as a special ability. The Blaster has a shotgun-like rifle, but his name comes from the ability to throw explosives. The Deputy comes with a carbine, but can tag a person for his teammates to go after and also gets increased experience points for a kill. The Gunslinger has a revolver and can fan the hammer in traditional Wild West style for fast shooting. The Trapper gets a sniper rifle for longer-distance targeting, but can also leave behind up to two steel-jaw traps to snare unsuspecting enemies.

Though I don’t think our history of the Wild West had this, but each class also gets a “Synergy Effect” to benefit nearby teammates. The Blaster provides improved damage protection, the Deputy offers a damage bonus up to double the normal amount, the Gunslinger increases shooting accuracy and the Trapper ups the chance that a player will get a critical hit bonus. All players also deliver a slow area heal to each other, and all Synergy Effects improve as a player ranks up through experience points earned during normal gameplay.

Of course, the benefit of the Synergy Effects is meant to be inspiration for players to work together. We’ve all been involved in multiplayer matches in other games that have teams, but where everyone runs on their own and there’s little strategy communicated between players. Lead and Gold players, however, earn a decent reward by sticking closer to other teammates, so Fatshark hopes it’ll improve the collaboration.

Another teamwork builder is the fact that when you’re dropped by an enemy, you aren’t immediately dead (much like Gears of War). You can crawl around and also use your secondary handgun to do some damage. If a teammate can get to you before you bleed out or an enemy totally puts you away, you can be revived and return to the battlefield. That keeps the game moving, but also encourages players to stick closer together. (Keep in mind, though, that a by-product of the pack mentality can also be that all of you get killed en masse by a skillful gunman.)

To further encourage the gameplay flow, Fatshark is enabling respawn at a “spawn stick” near a teammate. Also, matches can be “hot joined,” meaning it’ll be easy for players to join a match in progress, bumping out an AI bot who might be holding down the fort, so to speak, on the team.

Lead and Gold will have four game modes, which are pretty standard multiplayer fare, though under different names. Powderkeg has one team needing to place bombs at a couple of locations on the map, while the other team needs to defend those locations and disarm bombs if they’re planted. Conquest is a king-of-the-hill kind of mode that has each team trying to capture a series of points, while the other team is doing the same thing in the opposite direction. Greed is a capture-the-flag type of game, though with gold instead of flags that need to be brought back to the home base. Robbery is a mix of Powderkeg and Greed, where one team is trying to steal gold and plant explosives, while the other team needs to keep its gold from being taken.

The game will come with six maps, and Fatshark told us that each map will be designed to host at least two gameplay modes. Of course, there’s also the potential that new maps could be offered for purchase and download after the game comes out, which will expand the playfields, and it’d be possible for new gameplay modes to be offered in the same way.

Fatshark is doing its best to make Lead and Gold versatile. It can be played solo with AI bots being teammates and filling the enemy squad. The game will also balance out uneven-sized matches among multiple players. Our session was full of TeamXbox, IGN and GameSpy editors, and we had a blast as we learned the game. It’s a light-on-frills contest, so, much like Battlefield 1943, it was simple to pick up and play. We didn’t have a lot of time on it to learn the maps all that well, but we’re confident that an hour or so of play would give nearly anyone all the needed to know to not feel like a n00b.

Without a doubt, we’ll have more on Lead and Gold as it gets closer to its release, and if the PC version is any indication as to how far along the development is, we expect it won’t be all that long before it’s on Xbox Live Marketplace for your enjoyment.

I guess Alien Breed is coming out this week. I wonder how it'll be, I never played the old ones. The other weird thing is they're saying it's going to be episodic somehow.
They are remaking all Alien Breed games, and each game is one "episode".

Releasing. Not developing. My bad.

XBLA has been a toxic waste dump since Summer of Arcade. A few gems here and there, but mostly just shovelware if you ask me. The only games I've bought since summer are Qix, Puzzle Bobble.

South Park, Gyromancer, Ludicity, and some others were good, but it's been pretty bad otherwise.

Gyromancer has some odd DLC, but it's not stopping the game being awesome and long. I've thrown a lot of hours into the game and I'm only up to level 6 of the 12 in the main game.

Last I checked Gyromancer DLC is broken... the levels never appear. I check this stuff before buying any DLC these days.

Ah I see, thanks.

Cool to hear about the bots in Lead and Gold. Far too many developers skip out on bots because they think people only ever want to play against other people. They are dead wrong, I'd usually rather play against bots anyway especially with a buddy or two on my team.

It's not a problem for me, I've not been able to play anything for a period longer than about 20 minutes since buying Trials HD.

I have to keep going back to Trials.

I think they are taking the exceptional games and clumping them together for promotional releases. Darwinia+ and Serious Sam HD are both quality titles, which makes me wonder if they've got something planned for Q1 2010 (which is apparently the new Q4).

Alien Breed Evolution Episode 1 IGN Review

http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/105/1055240p1.html

Alien Breed Evolution is a straightforward action game with satisfying shooting mechanics and some impressive visuals. It steals ideas from all over the place but the interactivity of videogames always seems to make blatant imitation easier to swallow than it is in other mediums. Anyone who played the original Alien Breed back in the day will find their simple top-down shooter is all grown up with great lighting effects, an atmospheric soundtrack, and affecting cinematic events -- but the gameplay itself is rooted in 1990.

IGN Ratings for Alien Breed Evolution (X360)

8.0 Presentation
This evolution sports high production values and a slick interface.

8.0 Graphics
Environments look great with nice lighting effects and lots of detail.

8.0 Sound
The soundtrack is moody and aliens announce their presence with distinctive shrieks.

7.5 Gameplay
Straightforward action fare, but fun nonetheless. Go where the game tells you to go and shoot everything in your way.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
Leaderboards provide replay incentive and the entire game can be played through cooperatively locally or online.

7.9
Good OVERALL

This sounds right up my alley for 800 points, provided I can get at least a couple of hours out of it.

Yep, Mega Man 10 Is Multiplatform

http://www.siliconera.com/2009/12/15/yep-mega-man-10-is-multiplatform/

Nintendo Power announced it, but Mega Man 10 isn’t only for Wii. Just like Mega Man 9, the game will be available as a digital download for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 too.

This week’s issue of Famitsu had a bit about Mega Man 10, mentioned Blues (aka Protoman) mode, and listed it as a game for all three current consoles. A different strategy compared to Mega Man 9, which was locked on WiiWare in Japan for one year.

Capcom also announced the subtitle for Mega Man 10. In Japan, the game is called Mega Man 10: The Threat from Space.

Anyway, the game is not good. Everything seems off.

I think it's pretty good, for a downloadable game. Still I played it and realized it would take me forever to get round to it with all the retail games I'm playing at the moment.

Well shit... I thought it was supposed to be 800 but for some damn reason I purchased the damn game before heading off to work this AM for 1200.

I'm pretty much hosed at this point and those points are gone right?

That's something I guess. So how did it fare in the review?
I don't have the magazine in front of me right now, but off the top of my head I believe it got a 7.5 and was mostly docked for having long battles/being rather drawn out. The reviewer basically said fans of the genre should like it and the game takes a rather long time to beat.

Help please, I have an amazon US account with 10 bucks on it using gift vouchers.

I redeemed the codes, but when I look to buy code it says credit card is UK (which is true) so doesn't allow me to continue.

I need a favour, for somebody I can preferably trust, for me to pm my
account details, buy Splosion man using their cc (will not get charged), get code, delete their payment option and pm back the code.

Hope if anybody agrees (please) doesn't run off with my 10 bucks :lol not too much of a loss, but been using swagbucks and would like to finally get Splosion man for free :D

Very disappointed with Alien Breed. Far too flashy, to the point where it gets in the way of the gameplay. Movement is clunky and it's got absolutely none of the feel of the originals.

:(

After playing Assault Heroes, Assault Heroes 2, Geometry Wars, Mutant Storm Empires, Super Stardust HD, Commando 3 and Shadowgrounds, Alien Breed feels way too "been there, done that". Especially when compared to the really great games in the genre.

It's too bad since I loved the original, and the presentation of this new game seems good.

I have no idea why, but I thought they were gonna remake Alien Breed 1, 2 and Tower Assault. Sadly it's just the first game, which means that all three episodes will be just 15 hours of the same stuff.

Without any improvements I can't see these three episodes selling all that much. It will wear thin after just one episode.

Also very disappointed with the co-op. I knew it wasn't gonna be the same as the single player campaign, but the levels aren't much fun. They are short and the third level ends very abruptly. There seems to be absolutely no penalty for dying either. I guess if both die it might be game over, but that never happened to us.

Sad to hear the disappointment with Alien Breed. I'll still download the demo, but I thought it was a sure thing at 800 points. :(

If it was 800pts for the whole game, it would be an easier sell. As it is, you'll have to pay $30 for the complete experience.

Shitty game is shitty game at any price, though.

Forget that, want to know something sad, Puzzlegeddon is voted 2nd worse XBLA game (on UK dash) after NBA Rivals.

Are you kidding me?!

P.S. Thanks to PheonixFang for helping me out, playing splosion man and it's awesome...

I thought Alien Breed was suprisngly cool - really liked the atmosphere. Reminded me of Project Overkill on PS1 (from what I remember anyway). Whats this about it being sold in parts though - is it a short game? I was considering picking it up.

I tried the demo of Puzzlegedon, and it might be a good game if the play field wasn't so small I could not see anything clearly unless I moved closer to my TV. The icons are far too detailed to recognise quickly especially at that size.

It's supposed to be a trilogy, I think. 2 more episodes will be available for purchase later, thus making the final product $30. Game seems meh to me...kind of slow.

Each episode will take about 5-6 hours to finish, plus another 2-3 for the co-op levels.

Thoughts on the Arcade games of the (previous) day:

Puzzlegeddon: Need to give it another try... because this seemed... meh, to me. I didn't really get any of the feeling of the action/strategy from just playing it. I'd say I enjoyed the Trial to 0D Beat Drop more, even though I think Puz looks nicely polished, graphically. And all the cool looking stuff is where I'm NOT paying attention, since I'm trying to notice the puzzle... bah.

Alien Breed Evolution: Note, I've never played the Amiga game. So this all comes from a non-fan... I like what I saw and played! I love having a SHOOT button in a SHOOTER again... blasted shooters with trigger controls! XD Anyway, Darkness didn't bother me. Aliens where pretty much "bullet spunges", but I assume that changes in the future. Wish the campaign was multiplayer, but I appreciate that the multiplayer is fresh, original content. Sounds like a worthwhile bunch of episodes. Controls did feel a bit like "PC game ported to console", but I don't think I'd have a hard time getting used to them. They don't seem sluggish to me, anywho.

Are the extra episodes new content because I don't feel like paying for 1/3 of a game. For that I might as well get the complete Wii version.

They're just a continuation of episode 1, I assume - more levels, new enemies, etc. $30 is kind of pricey for me, and the trial was too easy.
