French developer Golgoth Studio captured our attention this October when it announced it was working on a complete high-def remake of the classic arcade game, Toki. However, today Joystiq learned that Microsoft has decided against publishing the remake itself and has invited the indie dev to find another publisher willing to put the game on its platform.

According to Toki HD producer Anthony De Sa Ferreira, the Xbox Live Arcade approval process only allows titles published by Microsoft-published or an approved third-party company. Following its submission, Microsoft told Golgoth Studio that Toki HD "did not fit with the current needs of Microsoft Game Studio," and suggested the developer contact another publisher. Golgoth tells Joystiq that it is in active conversations with multiple publishers and is confident the game will see life on the Xbox Live Arcade, saying an agreement may be only weeks away.

Ferreira believes Microsoft's approval process may have become more stringent in light of the recent high-profile success of original games on the platform, such as Shadow Complex. "I think it's too bad, because it's the independent studios who helped the XBLA to [meet] the success it knows today," he said, adding that not many indie devs can achieve such an impressive result as the Chair-developed title.

Since the game has been announced, Golgoth has become official developers for both Nintendo and Sony's respective downloadable platforms. Ferreira tells Joystiq that Sony is actively searching for titles for its PSN service, but have yet to reach a decision regarding the fate of Toki HD on the PS3.

In a message to fans on its Facebook page on December 10, Golgoth confirmed the Toki remake had been approved for Nintendo's WiiWare service, but, Ferreira tells Joystiq certain allowances will have to be made to bring the downloadable title to the standard definition platform. "Of course the game will not be the same as it would on the XBLA or PSN," he said. "It will be the same game without the HD touches." According to the producer, the WiiWare platform works for Toki HD because the game is not expected to be very large in size and is able to fit within Nintendo's mandated (and ridiculously small) 40MB limit for WiiWare titles.

Golgoth's plate continues to fill up as the developer is working with publisher G-Mode on two new titles. A "secret" remake and the previously announced HD reboot of Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja. According to Ferreira, the Joe & Mac remake will combine elements from the arcade and SNES versions of the game.

As for the future, Golgoth is asking fans what they'd like to see next from the studio. Popular choices included Capcom properties Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and Dungeon & Dragons -- which Ferreira says is currently "not possible" -- and Sega's Wonder Boy, which the developer is pursuing. While Golgoth continues to press for life on the XBLA, the producer tells Joystiq that the team is considering an entry into the 2010, Microsoft: Dream, Build, Play competition to showcase an original IP.

Maybe that will knock some sense into the platform holder and bring us some hot high-def Toki action.

I wish there were some kind of classic control scheme in alien breed. Never really been a fan of twin stick shooters, and the market is sort of flooded with them these days.

I found Alien Breed to be good fun for 800 points. took me about 5 hours in total and i will pick up the later episodes. I am quite dissapointed with this holiday on XBLA i thought we where getting Doom 2, Serious Sam and Perfect Dark.
Does anyone know anything on Quake Arcade the last i heard was that it was holidays but nothing has been said. I can't wait for this game on 360 i want to see the campers from MW2 try and play Quake and get totally owned.

As much as I enjoy PD, and respect Serious Sam... I'm more annoyed we've heard so little on Vandal Hearts and even Joyride. There's way more than enough FPS's around, they should probably spread the arcade ones out at bit, in the best interest of the games themselves.

Seems to be taking a while for this weeks games to get formally announced. 0 Day Attack, and Matt Hazard's game are hinted on the XBL "Coming soon" tab, how odd it would be to get those 2 games on Christmas week...

I have the same opinion. Game looks and sounds great. $10 for a 5 hour game with offline and online coop...I really don't understand the issue.

I'm trying to get 0 Day Attack On Earth, Anyone having trouble downloading it?

Yeah.. tried before work and couldn't get it. I haven't tried from the xbox site yet...

Just qued up the demo from the site.

0-Day doesn't run very smoothly and Polar Panic doesn't even look like it's HD. It has that upscaled, blurry jaggie look in-game with crisp menus.

Yea, I don't think releasing anything top shelf was the aim of this week.

Namco announces digital distribution expansion plans for back catalog

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/namco-announces-digital-distribution-expansion-plans-for-back-ca

We know, we know -- you've spent the better part of today searching the internet for all those Namco classics no longer playable on the futurebox of choice in your living room. Thankfully, Namco Bandai just this morning announced intentions to "increase its digital distribution presence," effectively eliminating your wasted time problem.

Aside from the news that two Katamari-based titles are headed to Xbox 360 and PlayStation Portable (Beautiful Katamari in "Q1 2010" and Me & My Katamari on December 22, respectively), today's communication did little for news on what else we can expect from the Japanese publisher on the digital front. That being said, the company specifically pointed out future titles heading to not just Xbox 360, but also a bolstering of titles in the PSone and PSP catalogs on the PlayStation Network. It appears as though we won't be hearing about other titles just yet, though, as the company said, "More titles to be announced in the coming months." But hey, at least you can stop all that internet scouring now, right?

http://www.siliconera.com/2009/12/23/these-are-japans-top-xbox-live-arcade-games-of-2009/

Microsoft posted a list with this year’s top ten Xbox Live Arcade games on the Japanese marketplace.

Not sure what the criteria is to be on the download ranking chart (sales? downloads? critic ratings?), but this is worth a look for a rough idea of Japan’s preferred Xbox Live Arcade games. Number two may surprise you!

10.) Mega Man 9
9.) The King of Fighters ‘98: Ultimate Match
8.) Ikaruga
7.) Shadow Complex
6.) R-Type Dimensions
5.) Trials HD
4.) Marvel vs. Capcom 2
3.) Castle Crashers
2.) Battlefield 1943
1.) Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram

Indiagames To Launch New Cricket Gaming iPhone App

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/24/AR2009122400307.html

One of India's most popular gaming platforms Indiagames is launching a nifty new Cricket iPhone app, called Cricket T20 Fever. Cricket is hugely popular in India and the new app will be a feature rich gaming app that will aim to simulate the experience of playing the sport and competing against other players.

The game will launch first on the iPhone and as a PC browser based game and within a few months be available on additional platforms like Symbian, Symbian, Maemo, PSP, Xbox Live Arcade and Nintendo DSi. And the app will feature Facebook Connect.

Indiagames has already released a number of mobile cricket apps, including its Cricket T20 World Championship app. Initially Indiagames plans to launch a free version of the game on App Store and a Paid Premium version but will also be experimenting with microtransactions with the app. While cricket doesn't have a significant fan base in the U.S., the sport has a huge following in other parts of the world, such as India.

Deal of the Week is always Gold-only. I assumed the Deals of the Day are the same, are they open for everybody?
Pretty sure the deals of the day are open for everyone since some Silver members reported seeing the lowered cost too.

NGBC Live has new backgrounds and filtered sprites:

Leona is in Metal Slug XX (with Slasher move) for PSP... somehow:

Hmmm, that filter isn't too bad. Wonder how it'd look on KoF XII sprites... seems to be better than SNK's previous filters. New BGs look kinda bleh, but at least it's something!

Leona in Metal Slug is awesome, however. Gooo Moon Slasher, wish it ate fireballs as reliably as it eats those bullets in Metal Slug! Would be cool if they made a costume variation with her KoF XII outfit.

Hopefully they put more effort into these ports than the ones from this year...

Do we know if we're getting that one, or will it be like Magic The Gathering and we'll miss out?

If you live in a region where you have a Zune Video Marketplace, you will miss out. Instead you will get a movie.

Castle Crashers and BF1943 are for all regions.

You Can No Longer Chase Dorito Trucks With Dinosaurs

http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/12/you_can_no_longer_chase_dorito.php

With the boxing day sales currently on I picked up a new Xbox 360 for my brother, hooked him up with a Xbox Live membership, bought him a copy of Trials HD, and went to download Doritos Dash Of Destruction.

But it was not there.

It appears the honeymoon for the free Xbox Live Arcade title is over - you can not download Doritos Dash Of Destruction off the Xbox Live Marketplace anymore. I don't think it was ever explicitly said whether it was a timed deal like Yaris, but that seems to be the case.

You can still download the trailer if you so wish, but that's all.
