While we are on SNK, I'm still holding on hope they will release Real Bout Fatal Fury 1, Special and 2. Also Ghost Pilot, Sky Adventure and Blue's Journey.

Whoa you're the first guy I met that actually likes Ghost Pilot.

I uh...really don't know what to think.

mr jones said:
I liked it more than Alpha Mission 2... but not by much.

Yeah given the choice between Alpha Mission 2 and Ghost Pilots I'd probably just slit my throat instead.

It is not the best system, but you would be likely to spend those points at some time in the future. I assume the reason for forcing you to pay a minimum amount is that there is a credit card charge associated with each transaction. I do wonder how services like Itunes handle it with stuff that costs only 99 cents. I am curious to know if anybody has an idea.

Apple doesn't charge you immediately after you buy an app. They will process 99 cents, but they'll typically delay between the purchase of an app and when it's debited so if you buy anything else within a few hours or maybe a day they can bill it all as one transaction.

So any reason in Canada I have to spend 1500 points to buy something thats 1200?

Moronic system. Haven't bought anything on XBLA because of it.

I believe you can go on MS's website, go to the Zune marketplace, and add exact point numbers. I think you can add exactly as many points as you want, and then buy XBLA games on the website. Unless that's not what you meant, in which case, ignore me.

Edit: Just checked. You can only add it in 400 point increments.

No, no, 400 increments is fine. That is reasonable. Everything on there is in 400 point increments, so thats good.

Can you give me a direct link to where I can buy these points? I cant find it at all.

Should be a link under here once you log in to the zune site.

But, err, you can also just buy in 400 increments directly from the 360 dashboard now.

Not in Canada, like I mentioned. Its 500, 1000, then 2000, then 5000.

So god damn stupid.

edit: Zune marketplace not available in my location (Canada)

HAHAHAHA. Fuck you MS. Was going to buy some games, but you can go fuck yourself. Gonna go on PSN instead.

Make sure you come back when the next nice looking XBLA game is announced and ask if it's hitting PSN too!

Vector Unit confirmed via a question on their Facebook page that Hydro Thunder Hurricane will be priced at 1200 spacebucks. Just passing that along so you guys can get prepared.

I'll buy it at 1200 no probs with 2 caveats, it feels nice to drive in it (demo!) and there is a campaign/career mode with at least 3 or 4 hours worth of meat to it.

Yeah, that's pretty terrible that you would have to buy an extra 300 or so MS points to get your game. You might actually have to buy a few indie games with your leftover change! Oh the horror!

Heaven forbid I get the ability to buy 1200 points for.........1200 points! This makes too much sense!!

Listen, XBLA has some great games, and that summer deal was amazing. Trials HD for 560ms was great. But when a game is 560, and I have to spend a 1000 to get it, thats messed up.

All I want is a system where I can put in my CC, and spend exactly what the game is listed as. The only reason I brought up PSN was because I can buy the exact amount. Not that it has better games or anything, but that the system doesnt fuck you. If something is 9.99, you SPEND 9.99.

Anyways, I sent a message to Major Nelson. Hopefully the consider it.

I've spent hundreds of dollars on XBLA... extra points in my account just accumulate until the next purchase. I don't see the big deal especially when you can get some great Indie games for a $1.

Can understand the frustration, especially since that shit has been changed on the US dashboard, but not for Canada.

Better off just buying points cards when you see them on sale, they were $10 off at dell a few weeks ago.

Except when you buy certain low cost things on PSN it charges 5 dollars, and puts the remaining amount in your wallet. Sure, i'll spend it later, but still...

I played the shit out of Dust at PAX 2009. It is the real deal.

2DHD RESPECT.
Heh, I had to chuckle as well :) I'm everything from President to the janitor, with a bit of coding/art on the side. I'd love to meet the Capy team at the next PAX.

I rarely buy PSN games or DLC. You can count on one hand how many I've bought.

For someone who buys all the XBLA games out there, sure, its probably a great system, using points.

But for someone like me who rarely buys them, its terrible. I always assumed that you can buy the exact amount of points, and when I tried to buy Trials HD for 560, I was very dissapointed.

I don't WANT to spend 1 dollar on some indie game. Why are you forcing me? I dont want to have points accrued for things I have no intent on purchasing. I just want to buy 560/1200 points to play Trails HD. Thats all. Hell, even if I do buy these point bundles, they just turn into odd numbers, making you spend even more to get the games. For example, 800 point game. Buy 1000 points. Spend 800 and have 200 left. Another 800 point game, buying 500 is not enough, you have to buy 1000 again because buying 500 would only give you 700.

How can people defend this system? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

Anyways, enough of that. Not sure if the bundle system will ever change. Probably not, since MS probably makes bucketloads of money from this.

Take a close look and see if people (and it varies person by person of course) are defending the system or just saying it isn't worth complaining about, big difference.

I agree, it would be great to just add points, via any means (banks acc, cc, online payment method) of any amount. Thing is that's not something any of the three consoles offer.

I have the same problem with PSN that I do with XBLA because I don't have a cc, I pretty much only get points via online codes (Amazon) or physical cards. Xbox Live is better I find in this area as I can get U.S points (I'm in Japan) straight from Amazon (code emailed to you within 5 minutes). PSN on the other hand doesn't sell online codes which has stopped me from picking up stuff I really want like Joe Danger and Landit Bandit.

That's exactly how I feel. The only system that bothers me is WiiWare, since it's tied to the hardware. But I don't mind having extra points/whatever in XBL and PSN, since I'm always buying something.

Bought the four Genesis Sonic games with the sale they had. Even though I own them all, it's great to have them with easier access plus the extras that come with being an XBLA game. Was going to buy the Ultimate Genesis Collection but with the amount of games I still have to play, it just felt easier to simply get the four Sonic games. If I have the time later on, I'll buy the collection for all the other games. Plus being able to get all four for under 1000 points is a pretty damn good deal considering how good the games are.

Am I the only one who notices that the music is rather quiet though?

THQ ANNOUNCES RED FACTION: ARMAGEDDON PREQUEL

http://www.stickskills.com/news/995/thq-announces-red-faction-armageddon-prequel/

Almost three weeks ago, THQ officially announced Red Faction: Armaggedon for both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Today, they've let word out that they'll be release an arcade title for both systems that will serve as a prequel to Armageddon.

Speaking to CVG, THQ's VP of Publishing Danny Bilson said, “There’s going to be a Red Faction Arcade game that ships about three or four months before Armageddon."

“What’s interesting is that we will sell it to the fans, it will have content you can download that is TV show-related, it will build up to the new game and also we can use it to drive pre-orders, too; we can give codes and aspects of it, we can give the whole thing away.”

When exactly does Armageddon drop you might be asking? You can expect Red Faction: Armageddon by March of next year, which puts the arcade prequel towards the holiday portion of this year, with January of next year at the latest.

What do you think about THQ's strategy to release an arcade prequel? Are you planning on picking it up? Be sure to leave us a comment below, or sound off in our forums!

Dust: An Elyssian Tale was an Indie title but after winning a major competition became an XBLA title.

Hands On Hard Corps: Uprising
http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/28/hands-on-hard-corps-uprising/

Contra with Guilty Gear art is the easiest way to describe Hard Corps: Uprising. Konami hired Arc System Works to develop this downloadable game, which feels just like anime Contra, even though it doesn’t have Contra in the title.

Two characters were selectable during the demo Christer and Bahamut, the villain from Contra: Hard Corps. I went with Bahamut and blasted through the first stage. In typical Contra fashion, alien ran towards my character as soon as he jumped out of a helicopter. I fired back and ran towards them. Saucers hovered overhead carrying power ups like the spread shot and a rapid fire laser. Unlike other Contra games, you don’t die when you get hit by a bullet. The penalty is one notch of your life bar and special weapon. Traps like quicksand can kill you if you don’t jump out of it in time.

One of the most interesting additions in Hard Corps: Uprising is bullet reflecting. Bahamut can toss a bullet back at an enemy if you press a button right before he gets hit. The bullet homes in on its target, which makes it easy to counter-kill enemies attacking on different vertical levels. Bullet reflecting has slow recovery time, so you can’t mash the bullet reflecting button. That’s an easy way to get killed.

What you can’t see in the screenshots is how smooth Hard Corps: Uprising looks in motion. Hard Corps: Uprising is eye candy, especially if you dig anime-style graphics. While I only got to see two characters, Konami plans on having a larger roster. Three characters will be available as downloadable content.

Three DLC Characters, eh? Hopefully at least 2 of those include Browny and Brad Fang!

There where 4 characters in Hard Corps... hope at least 1 of them is unlockable in the game itself.

THQ: Saint's Row for 3DS was already being made for Xbox Live Arcade
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/29/thq-saints-row-for-3ds-was-already-being-made-for-xbox-live-ar/

The Nintendo 3DS game list has a lot of predictable titles on it, but seeing Saint's Row on there was somewhat of a surprise. But it was a natural fit, as THQ VP Danny Bilson recently said. Not only was Nintendo enthusiastic about putting mature content on its new system, but "the interesting thing about the game is we were already making it. We were already making it as our Xbox Live game and in 3D also. It's designed for 3D already."

Wait, an Xbox Live title? The Saint's Row 3 universe is full of surprises -- THQ is planning a whole fleet of games to launch together, and among those is a downloadable XBL game that will unlock content in the full game (and vice versa). The 3DS will share content as well -- "all of our extension properties," says Bilson, "all connect and unlock things in each other."

Looks like the game's "new direction" is actually split a few different ways. All of these games are still due out sometime after March of next year.

Skulls of the Shogun Preview

http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/110/1102819p1.html

Fans of turn-based strategy games like Advance Wars and Shining Force should keep an eye out for Skulls of the Shogun, the first effort from Haunted Temple Studios. Comprised of a few former Electronic Arts developers, the team set out to create something decidedly smaller than the AAA blockbusters-that-promise-gamers-everything they were working on at EA. Skulls of the Shogun is a more accessible take on the strategy genre that Haunted Temple hopes will remind gamers of the good old 16-bit days.

Like other games of the sort, players take turns giving orders to their troops on the battlefield. The first non-traditional aspect you'll notice is the absence of a grid that would normally lock your units to individual squares. Here, you can move a unit freely within its movement range. Only five orders can be given during a turn, so if you have more than five units you'll want to spend those orders wisely. An order could consist of attacking, healing, or "haunting" an area. Haunting is how you claim resources that can be spent to summon new units.

Those rings around the units represent the wall they've created by standing next to one another.
Another order you can give your troops reveals where Skulls of the Shogun gets its name. A defeated samurai leaves his skull behind, which other units can pick up. Claimed skulls give a boost of health, and if a unit picks up three they'll be transformed into a powerful demon that can attack twice in one turn (regular units cannot).

Units that are placed close enough together will create a sort of wall that the enemy can't move through. This way, you can protect weaker or important units by strategically moving their comrades around them.

Your goal in Skulls of the Shogun is to defeat your opponent's general. A general isn't activated at the start of a game. He'll hang out in the back of your army, gaining health each turn and becoming more powerful each turn he isn't used. When it's time to bring him out you can give the order to activate him, but you'll want to hold out as long as you can so you can have the most powerful general possible. Generals can also pick up skulls and transform into demon generals.

You can only issue five orders during a turn in Skulls of the Shogun.
Haunted Temple brought Skulls of the Shogun by the IGN office to show us the multiplayer mode. One game took us about 25 minutes, and after it was over I felt I had a pretty good handle on how it all works – looks like Haunted Temple may be succeeding at making a more accessible turn-based strategy game. We tried a two-player game, but the finished product will support up to four players. Units from different teams can be banded together to create walls, so players can form alliances in order to crush a common enemy. Only one team can win the game, though, so those alliances will eventually have to be broken. Haunted Temple wants the multiplayer mode to be a friendly, painless experience so players can drop in and out whenever they like, AI players can be substituted for humans on the fly, and you can save a game at any time.

We haven't seen the single-player campaign, yet, but we are told there will be an epic, humorous story that takes players across a variety of landscapes.

Haunted Temple is currently looking for a publisher for Skulls of the Shogun. What we've seen so far looks promising.
