I really hope things get better with this service, because they're still light-years ahead of their competitors, but they won't be forever at this rate.

I'm sorry, but is there really a notion in your mind that things would "continue on like this" and that we'd see absolutely no great releases for XBLA ever again? That The Behemoth stuff, Worms, everything would just get shitcanned?

It's an off week (that happened to shockingly follow two CONSECUTIVE holiday weeks). Granted, there's a dogpile at this point whenever anything besides a release of Alien Hominid happens in the XBLA space. But I've yet to see even one argument that didn't sound like the mewling of someone drunk on their own sense of entitlement.

And, yeah, this reaction is pretty much why they'll never give out release dates. I said previously that I hope they drop Original Rally-X just for spite. Now I'm voting for a Ninety Nine Nights UNO Deck, 700 Points. If this wasn't on the heels of the holidays, I could maybe see a cause for whinging, but, come on. First week of January? And y'all are going to call out the dogs?

1/10: N3 UNO Deck OR BUST.

I'm still hoping that XBLA will start releasing far more games and popular ones at that.

Enough of the 1989 looking stuff. Let's move up a half decade, Microsoft!

Right now XBLA for me is a bunch of retro games and a few mediocre indie games. Far from what I was expecting. The only game I ever give time to is occasionally SFII and that feels dated as hell.

Well, that's not at all what I was suggesting, and I apologize if I was unclear. I'm somewhat upset the releases are anemic at this point, but I realize that's just the way it is. I'm more upset about the lack of communication and that Microsoft themselves put expectations in place that they were not able to meet. We should have slightly more notice than we do when a new game is releasing, and we most assuredly should know if nothing is coming.

MS is the one that claimed that 30 XBLA games would be released between a particular date and year end, and they ended up doing about 60% of that. I realize that they don't hold games back on purpose or anything of the like, because that would be contrary to common sense. What I am saying is that they should be more careful about what they publically say they will do and communicate better about XBLA all around.

Obviously we're getting good stuff again at some point - heck, Worms is just next week. But they've got to get this going better...if they can release more perhaps by increasing the size of the team and that's a financially doable thing, go for it. If not, I'll settle for at least knowing what's coming up, even if it's only the next couple weeks. XBLA is one of the best things about the 360, and I just want it to achieve its full potential.

Pardon me for being slow on the uptake, my brain is goofy on cold medicine, but did ANYTHING AT ALL come out for XBLA today?

I'm guessing no, considering no one has mentioned getting achievements for anything new.... but you guys are a coy bunch and might just be playing something neat behind my back.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect a date months or even weeks in advance for these kinds of games. But days? Hell, hours? Must we be guessing four hours before the next scheduled game? There's some middle ground to be found here between committing to a deadline too soon and not letting your customers know what to expect until it's already out.

It's complicated. seriously it is. the announcing of things even.

Segata Sanshiro said:
Nope, nothing this week. Tune in next week for Worms.

nothing has been announced yet for next week. So don't go hyping Worms and getting the natives restless. They will come for your head if it doesn't work out. Unless you've got a source?

hell, even mildewproduction, with his "my source are press releases" got 2 of them wrong ;)

Ah, my mistake arne. I thought it was in that news item on the last page, but I was wrong and now see it was just rumour. I have no idea what will be next week. Could be cake, could be an empty bag, could be a mousetrap.

no prob.

Last I checked, my XBLA backlog was pretty stout let alone my regular backlog. I would much rather have a few less stinkers and a few more awesome titles. One week is not going to kill anyone.

I want to put in a vote for a full HD version of Gyruss with 5.1. Please, Konami, make it happen. Don't give me another Contra, please.

I can relate to stuff being more complex than it seems. In my line of work, we value motherboards for inventory. No problem. Someone asks, "how much does it cost to make that?" and we can't tell them. Our systems don't get into that kind of detail, it's amazingly complex.

At least part of the confusion/frustration may stem from when the Xbox Live Arcade Wednesdays program was kicked off, with five games all having release dates. It set a kind of precident at the start, spoiling us all.

Doesn't seem too complicated for Sony or Nintendo but for all it does well Xbox Live is not without flaws that could easily hold it back. It's going to be competing against huge classic backlogs from Sony and Nintendo in addition to the original titles they produce for each of their respective marketplaces. It's like another mini console war and Xbox Live hasn't made the impact that I thought it would much less the headway. It's got a decent library of games but by no means an impressive one.

Nintendo doesn't have that problem right now, maybe in the future, but they've started off well. One could argue it's because all they're doing is dumping ROMs. Don't forget that in most instances, Nintendo doesn't reveal what games they're releasing on Mondays. However they have stuck to their schedule of every Monday and they're doing a good job of it, even if they have a (fan reaction-wise) off week like this one.

Sony... frankly I would disagree they haven't met some of the similar challenges XBLA has. fl0w's been delayed remember to a nebulous date in January after having a Dec. 19 release date. Go! Sudoku didn't have a release date, it just came out, but it was announced ahead of time. Same for Calling All Cars. You could argue that in that case that's not too difference from XBLA -- the service has a bunch of announced games with no set release date. Do note that I'm not saying anything about the PS1 downloadable games for PSP, because it's not fair to assume everyone has a PSP and can take advantage of it.

EDIT: I noticed you were also talking about future libraries. Since I'm not in the business of determining strategy for XBLA, I can at least say that we'll wait and see on how that classic library for Sony works out with how much and how often. That's a big unknown since they haven't set a precedent, regardless of how impressive the back catalog is. Nintendo is different since they have been delivering on it. That's where you run into the competition of enhanced vs. straight classic port.

It's not all gloom and doom, I think XBLA does a lot of things right. I haven't been keeping up with it as closely as you have as far as releases go. Sony and Nintendo have yet to really ramp it up, I said they were going to be competing though, I know it hasn't happened yet. Still a lot of the advantages that Live Arcade presents are also hurdles that must be overcome, you can't just dump roms, you have to do Achievements and all that other extraneous bullshit.

At the end of the day people just want games, doesn't matter if it's preserving some ancient crappy game on Live, playing a nostalgic classic ROM on VC, or playing a warmed over arcade port on PS3. Still when will a game like Tekken DR happen on Live, I download gigs of demos but can't buy an Arcade game unless it's >= 50 megs? I mean I'll take a properly pimped classic any day, Geometry Wars is slick, online SF2 is purchase worthy, and there's a tangible advantage there when worthwhile enhancements are present. Pac Man isn't a dumped rom it's got achievements and leaderboards, spiffy, but am I really missing out? Why wouldn't I just play my backwards compatible Namco Museum? Geometry Wars got people excited not digital downloads of those same dumped roms or arcade dinosaurs. Sony seems to be taking it a lot more seriously with internal teams developing content.

Just thought I'd toss a couple things in.

Here's the games out for XBLA, listed in reverse order of release (most recent on top) so you can scan the release history: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/livearcadexbox360/?WT.svl=nav

Second point, Carbonated is an Internal Microsoft team. They did Uno - the best selling XBLA game so far and a few others, so MS is doing some development internally.

I know there's a good amount of stuff, I've tried a lot of it, but I could give a crap about a good portion of it. I expected more by now, but this isn't the online micro pissing contest thread. You'd just think that after over a year they could at least have the process down well enough to get us one game a week. Sure people were on vacation and shit but then at least they should have known that. Just sick of waiting, all the good stuff is always on the horizon with XBLA it seems. First SF, then Luminies, then Contra, and now there's talk of Marathon, Worms, Castle Crashers, etc. They're all coming eventually it's just the wait that sucks.

the beginning of that list is in order of release, and stays in order up to and including Uno, but everything from SmashTV and below is out of order.

Also, I've scanned through a lot of this thread, and haven't seen this anywhere a nice handy list so:

Xbox Points to US Dollars:

80 points: $1
120 points: $1.50 (approximately)
400 points: $5
800 points: $10
1200 points: $15
1600 points: $20

It would be nice if someone was able to make a list of this in Euros.

Guys, go here and search for "doom". Maybe Final and Ultimate ar coming to XBLA?

woah, nice find. Perhaps they will be marketplace add-ons for the existing doom?

EDIT: But normal Doom isn't even listed for 360, so I don't suppose it can mean all that much.

Yeah the Doom currently up is already Ultimate Doom. Final Doom is one of those standalone expansions for Doom 2 that didn't require the full game. Personally I'd rather have Doom 2 than Final Doom's levels...

Doom 2 would be sweet, though some of the later levels are too big for their own good. Basically a precursor to Donkey Kong 64 :lol I never played Final Doom so I wouldn't mind it popping up on XBLA either.

I never got to play Doom 2, so I'd love that to go up. I still head back and play Doom on XBLA once in a while. Loved the last episode, which I never got to play on PC.

But I dunno, I played the demo, it did not support widescreen. Has anyone have the full arcade game?

Smash TV and lots of arcade live games do support widescreen though.

EDIT**

Ms. Pac-Man on Wednesday.

“Ms. Pac-Man”: 400 Microsoft Points, rated E

I'm personally not interested, but some people are, I'm sure. The original Pac-Man was the 5th best selling XBLA game in 2006, after all. Which is why we get Ms. Pac-Man.

Also, my regularly schedule bitching at arne is postponed a week, in true XBLA fashion, because they actually announced the game two days in advance. 0_o

:p

Worms was never promised. It's coming, but no release date was promised. Some smart guy on here said it would be MS's CES surprise. yeah, surprise!

Well at least now we understand the week delay...

... WAIT A MINUTE NO WE DON'T!

I wish I could tell you, but I can't. it's understandable and really has to do with the holidays and the fact that Monday was the 1st and that was a holiday.

XBLA at the moment is useless!
50 meg limit + old arcade ports = suck balls

PSN Games and Wii's VC clowns XBLA completely.

Don't get me wrong. I like XBLA and my 360, but come on. This is getting ridiculous.

Are MS going to make any more CES announcements, or were we done when the keynote finished yesterday?

I agree about PSN to the extent of Lemmings, Gripshift and soon Tekken but VC absolutely not. If we're moaning about the release of an old arcade-port, then I have to say it's because we want NEW games, not old games.

I love the idea of PSN, XBLA and *NEW* 2D platformers, shooters, simple, fun games. But I don't want to play old games so, no, VC is not 'clowning' XBLA.

Yea what an asshole for assuming Microsoft would due something cool to commorate the event. Boy was he ever wrong.

Who would pay 5 bucks for this when you can find a flash version very easily on the internet for free? Seems a bit rediculous.

Well not everyone has a computer. Then again you'd have to be out of your mind to be spending money on a broadband connection just for your X360.

Since when has MS done anything cool for people? It's all about the dollar for them.
