Well, I guess my point is, in one way or another, MS actually has announced a good number of releases in advance in conjunction with publishers providing or releasing the news.

It just seemed that you were insinuating that people couldn't see (and therefore say wow, potentially) at any of the releases coming down the pipe.

You got a current list?

I can't find a unified list, but here's what I can think of...
obviously subject to change, cancellation, etc.

Gyruss
Yie Ar Kung-Fu
Rush'n Attack
Super Contra
Track & Field
Castlevania: SOTN
Lumines Live: whatever the pack for early 07 was
Centipede/Millipede
BattleZone
Asteroids/Asteroids Deluxe
Missile Command
Tempest
Warlords
Carcassone
Settlers of Catan
Heavy Weapon
Worms HD
Mad Tracks
Alhambra
Sonic the Hedgehog
Paperboy
Root Beer Tapper
Mutant Storm Empire
Castle Crashers
HoopWorld
Megaforce

there's probably more. I'm tired of looking around.

actually

if that list is totally accurate, and it seems to have enough sources cited, you're looking at 48+ announced games.

give the VC thread a year then come talk. When XBLA was out for a couple of months people were all stating "This is the future of live"... now look at the comments. Wait till the "fresh new scent" wears off.
Hahah YEAH, that makes sense.

"Just you WAIT until EarthBound and Chrono Trigger and Blaster Master and Air Zonk and Super Mario Bros 3 are available, that's when people are REALLY going to start getting sick of it."

Give me a break.

OK so can someone please explain and get me out of my Pacman ignorance but isn't Ms Pacman the exact same game as Pacman just with different skins & maps?

Charging out the ass for all this nostalgic bullshit is the exact same problem I have with Nintendo and their willingness to hock out the same game time after time to their userbase.

Oh what wonders will XBLA bestow upon us in another two weeks? Mappy? Lock N' Chase? Burger Time? I can hardly freakin' wait.

GTFO, I would drop buckets of paper for Burger Time. well, not buckets.

I wouldn't actually mind those two at 400 points each.... at least my dad will know what I'm playing for once. :lol

If the one release every Wednesday holds true (ha) then that's 3 1/2 months worth of nothing. I'm sure they'll be able to find a way to stretch that to a good 5 months or so though.

Jesus, if they'd just release this stuff in bunches I wouldn't have too much of a problem but this one (old ass) game a week trickle is ridiculous. Just how long do you have to spend to on a game like freakin' Asteroids? It's Asteroids! I can play that on my cell phone. I just keep thinking about all the old games they haven't even announced yet....good lord. Come 2010 we'll still be getting stuff like Jungle Hunt, Sea Wolf, and Food Fight. Ugh.

For everything MS seems to be doing right with the 360 they're really dropping the ball with XBLA. Just disappointing all around imo.

You may not agree with my bolded listing, and assuming everything on this list comes to fruition including rumored stuff, except for Eternity's Child which we know isn't an approved XBLA concept... that's 5 months worth of quality releases. I think, while you're accurate in the # of games, you're somewhat misrepresenting it in the way you quoted.

Arne my biggest complaint is that you guys are releasing 1 title a week (sometimes none). How about an original title every other week with a classic title in between? Come on is two a month too much to ask? :) Outside the original launch window how many original titles have been released (minus card games).

Looks like 41 games are out on XBLA. IIRC, it launched with eight.

the xbla team is working on making sure it's, at the very least, more consistent. unfortunately things don't work in our/their favor as often everyone would like. that will change soon (I hope).

with original IP, that's much tougher. how can you schedule an independent developer's timeline to make sure you have enough titles to do every other week, etc.?

Off the top of my head I can think of:

Marble Blast
Wik: Fable of Souls
Astropop
Assault Heroes
Cloning Clyde
Novadrome
Lumines
Roboblitz

original or non-arcade?

Arne, he can do the research himself if he has a 360. Don't rise to the bait, it's not worth it. A real shame to see the XBLA thread derail like this.

XBLA will make a return to glory, there's no doubt about it.

well, he's trying to prove a point which I know is more wrong than right, given the fact that independent IP is slave to each individual developer's timelines.

Consistency would be nice especially since MS pushed out the arcade Wednesday thing...they did push that out didn't they...I thought they did...

I can understand the issues you might have with independent developers. Can't you hold developers to a release schedule then if they are late you dictate the date the game comes out? What about holding some games in your pocket for these situations? I suppose the problem would be that the developer wouldn't want MS to sit on a game cause they want to make their revenue though. I can understand some of the difficulties. Perhaps MS should be developing their own games for XBLA for this very thing. Are any of the arcade games MS published other than GW?

Non-arcade.

Absolutely. You can't just tell a developer to get a game 'done' for next Wednesday because Maynerd keeps moaning about it!!

Eventually all these games will get finished and we'll see a steady flow. And there's no doubt that MS and their partners have a ton of XBLA games in development that aren't on that list.

But the fact remains that a game is done when it's done, and only when it's done should we see it on XBLA. If that means playing the waiting game, then so be it.

stuff that's too lengthy

Carbonated is a MS studio. They came out with (imho excellent and well programmed) Uno. I have no doubt that they're not sitting on their butts. Although MS is the platform holder, they don't have the executive power over independent developers would have if they were actually publishing the game. and, again imho, I would prefer the game gets done when the indie dev says it's done. One case where this can really happen.

Non-arcade?

20 original games, not counting the card games and backgammon.

QFT.

Aw man, I got all giddy seeing ZAMN in that list, but I see Wiki has it listed as rumour. Boy I hope that one pans out as true.

As for this week's XBLA stuff...at least we're getting something, it's a good game, and hey-hey, we found out about it two days in advance. I have nothing to complain about this week.

I guess what I find distressing is that you post that big semi-bolded list, and yeah, there are a lot of games in that list I want, but then I also see things like checkers or reversi (aka Othello, right?) or Battlezone (I assume the original), and all I can think is "well, that's going to be a disappointing week". And when a week goes by without a release, that just makes it worse, because that means I still have to anticipate a week of checkers. It's like sitting in a doctor's office waiting for a shot (although maybe you'll get the lollipop in advance or there'll be a good issue of Highlights for Kids in the rack).

Also partly because, while I understand indie devs can't be controlled, and the big arcade pushers like Namco also have some schedule restrictions, I can't for the life of me understand how the MS division that made Solitaire and Chess and Checkers etc hasn't managed to whip up quick versions of the same thing. Hell, just make the Checkers achievements:

win a game - 50
king me - 50
double capture - 50
cross the board - 50

there, 80% of the work is done!

Come on Arne....we all know Hoopworld will never be released hahaha. That game has been in limbo for so long. But you get major props for mentioning Space Giraffe.

Here are some options MS should be look at.... (imo)

1: Release two games per week. One fitting in the 50mb limit for all of those poor mem card owners out there and another that actually starts making xbl fans (and potential xbl users) say 'Wow, xbla is really coming into its own'. This will keep everyone happy, plus it will encourage mem card users to get a HDD.

2: Try releasing a couple of games in one pack. IE, Contra and Super Contra should be, imo, purachased together. Have a few Namco classics available in a pack as well as individually for mem card users. Cheaper price for buying the compilation because not only will this incite users to perhaps purchase a pack because its 1 or 2 hundred more points than the original couple of games they want plus get a bonus, but it might actually encourage mem card owners to purchase a HDD.

3: Keep the xbla as it is but release an XNA arcade as well with no mb limit. This will encourage users to buy a HDD (See where I am going with this?)

Xbox Live has so much potential but MS are letting other platforms start making a mockery of xbla. The only thing MS is doing by sticking to a 50mb limit is keeping the few people who have mem cards, happy. You may as well stop releasing playable demos and movies. Seriously.

Streamline studios says they're still working on it on their site and even on their forums as recently as a few days ago... so yeah, there's hope for Hoopworld I guess!

Arne, any word on Alien Hominid? The Behemoth announced it together with Castle Crashers and we have yet to hear from AH ever since. Slightly worrisome, considering they claimed it would've been released by Q4 2006.

still alive and kicking. don't you worry.

I just recently got my 360, and can say that XBLA is great for me. Reading comments calling it a failure or disspointment confused me until I realized it's probably one of those deals where it's a criticism as much as it's a back-handed compliment. It's so good that we just want more of it, and that can be dissapointing (i.e. the main complaint being consistency and volume). But, for me, since I haven't exhausted all the games I like it's still the honeymoon period. :)

Sweet! A new game for XBLA this Wednesday! Unlike last week when we got **** nothing!

Oh wait. . . it's ancient. .

. . and it was a launch title for the original Xbox Live arcade. .

. . back in 2004. .

. . and it was free. .

XBLA will never satisfy everyone. It's that simple. I'm sure if these games were not live aware and were just emulated roms, MS could dump them on the service. That wouldn't serve the publishers at all. One release per week, allowing that game it's time in the sun, giving publishers incentive to create games that might actually sell.

The hardcore gamer in me would play every single game released on arcade, but we know that the hardcore are not the majority of 360 owners. Dumping on the platform would never make much money for MS or the publishers and there would be LESS original content.

Give me a break.

The difference is that you know what you're getting with VC, the same old thing that was released eons ago.

What if I don't give a shit about SMB3, Chrono Trigger, et al? What if 8bit sound and graphics look and sound like shit to me? Well i'm SOL aren't I with VC.

Yeah XBLA recently has way too much retro shit but occasionally we get some really great titles that really push the hardware (RoboBlitz), anyone can play (Uno, Zuma, Feeding Frenzy), expand how great Live is (SF2, Assault Heroes, Small Arms) AND the updated retro stuff (Smash TV with networking built in).

VC is hot now because it's a new service that contains a lot of good memories for people. Will that love last forever? I have a feeling that in a years time that love may be more bitter like XBLA.
