Holy shit clock in another hour for 4-6 in Switchball alone. This game goes from really easy to insane in 2 stages. It's not just the levels in itself, but the constant camera nurturing you need to do. In 4-6 for example, the camera is never where I want it to be, and most of the time moving platforms even obstruct the view, just as your balancing on some planks. Infuriating. I'm gonna give this game a good long break after I beat it
Never really had much trouble with the camera personally. But if you want, you could always activate the auto-camera (Super Mario Galaxy-ish) by pressing the Y-button, I think.

Auto is default, but there's three camera settings. Personally, I don't see how anyone who can handle a console FPS can have trouble with controlling both ball and camera. Same basic logic to me.

Oh, I just realized that I played that. It's...odd.

an Translated: Asteroid Cowboys Details Uncovered

Last week we told you about Asteroid Cowboys the game that received a grant from the Nordic Games Program. Details were scarce at that point but Digital Out has finally released a few more details about the game and even some images. Now, I don't speak Danish (despite my favorite author being Danish) but luckily we've got a reader that does. Cue Lars Soerensen.

Digital Out says:

Lars roughly translates this as:

When the game is done, you will have 4-player deathmatch and team deathmatch. Realistic simulation of lasso-throw and asteroid trajectory gives unique and exciting gameplay. Perfect for casual gaming.

Realistic lasso throwing and 4-player deathmatch, huh? I can see potential here but there is still little to go on. You've got me intrigued Digital Out, don't blow it.

Oh man. I wonder what Jeff Minter will say if Tempest outsells Space Giraffe. Another meltdown incoming?

Man...Tempest looks so nice....gonna have to pick it up since my PC version died long ago.

And man...I wish they'd get the updated version of Robotron out to us (the one that hit consoles and PCs I believe, years ago.....so freaking nice)

I enjoyed the Arkadian Warriors demo so much, I've actually ponied up the cash.

Just completed the
Minotaur
quest and have had an absolute blast so far. It reminds me of an old Dreamcast game, but I can't put my finger on which one.

I thought it played kind of like that old re-done Gauntlet game (from my brief 5 minutes with the demo).

I'm glad there are people enjoying it. I couldn't stand it, but I'd much rather see games that achieve some degree of success on Live, rather than a situation where every release is either "this game is great and everyone should buy it" or "this game is only slightly better than Yaris, so it's a bargain if they pay you 100 MS Points to download it."

(EDIT: And clearly Arkadian Warriors is having some level of success, what with it being the most downloaded game this last week)

I'm fairly certain that every suggested move the game gives you is the best move you can make to help the opponent.
I agree with that. I find myself looking very carefully at the moves it suggests because it almost always hands them the ability to rain death upon me in the next turn. :lol

There shouldn't be... after all, Space Giraffe is not Tempest, right?

More interesting is the fact he did Tempest 2000 which is what Space Giraffe is crying out to be and what I think Minter was hoping would be as successful if not more so of.

Sort of looking forward to TriggerHeart. Might not be very good but it's a traditional 2D shooter and XBLA needs a ton of them IMO.
It's not "very good," no, but it's definitely solid and at least enjoyable to an extent. I'm looking forward to it too, even though Omega Five is where the real hotness is.

Undertow must have flopped, which is NOT good for an online multiplayer shooter. Worms is consistently in the bottom of the top 10 so it must have a fairly sizable community by now. Maybe I'll put it on my to watch list.

Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball Hands-On
We check out a work-in-progress version of Blazing Lizard's unique XBLA take on dodgeball.

Earlier today, during a meeting with representatives from Blazing Lizard and Gamecock, we had an opportunity to get our hands on Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball for the first time. Currently scheduled for release via Xbox Live Arcade early in 2008, the game pits two teams of up to four players against each other on battlefields where the deadliest weapon is a brightly colored ball with a smiley face on it. You already know about the pirate and ninja teams. While theirs is certainly a battle that could rage for all eternity, extra variety will come courtesy of zombie and robot teams.

Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball's single-player game will purportedly be story driven, and we're told that each of the four playable teams will have its own version of said story. But we're not sure this is a game that you'll be playing for its storyline. While you'll need to spend some time playing solo or in co-op mode to unlock a couple of the teams, we suspect most of the fun will be had with the competitive multiplayer matches. Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball will support up to four players on a single console, and that number holds true in online matches where up to eight players can do battle simultaneously.

Regardless of which teams you're playing as, every player in the match will have a different special ability. For example, one of the pirates has a wooden leg that he can pound into the ground to stun nearby opponents, while another has a pet parrot that will retrieve the ball for him at any time. Ninja skills that we got to see in action included teleporting the ball into a player's hands and a "cloak" ability that made one of the players almost invisible. At first glance, almost all of the character-specific powers might appear to be a little overpowered, but you need a full stamina meter to activate them. You also use stamina every time you jump, throw a ball, or perform a regular attack, so you won't get to use the specials very often. Incidentally, none of your attacks can actually harm other players--only the ball can do that. Your attacks are simply used to incapacitate opponents and gain possession of the ball.

If there was ever a game that needed to be made into a movie...

When you've got the ball, your goal is obviously to throw it at one of your opponents. But it's not quite that simple because there are a number of different ways you can go about doing so. For example, if you try to throw the ball while you're running, it'll just go in whichever direction you're facing, but if you remain stationary, your shot will hone in on an opponent. Furthermore, if you throw the ball at the apex of a jump, you'll do so with much more power--making it much harder to defend against. You can defend against incoming balls either by hitting them back at the thrower or by catching them, which replenishes some of your health.

The matches that we played today took place on a beach and in a snow-covered forest, which are the home arenas for the pirates and ninjas, respectively. Environmental objects, such as the trees in the forest, promise to make every arena play a little differently and should make the headstone-filled graveyard of the zombie team especially challenging. The robot team's home arena, which we've yet to see, will have the appearance of a futuristic factory. We're told that at least two additional arenas will be made available for download after Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball's release, along with a fifth playable team.

We'll bring you more information on Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball as soon as it becomes available.

Hyper Fighting has some issues, the biggest one is some janky net code and the XBOX 360 stock controller.

I just got the SF jones.... I played this arcade unit they have at Coscto with SF and ive been itching to play again. Ive heard Street Fighter Aniversary is good so ill probably get that instead.

Steve Fawkner said at Dissecta in Melbourne that he'd heard that from a lot of people. The algorithm he used to recommend your move is the same as the one used to pick the enemy's move.

So, I guess Stainless broke another game. Tempest is nigh unplayable due to the all the "fancy" new explosion graphics and shit. Seeing the shots behind these thick walls of pink particles is pretty much impossible.

I didn't think it would be logically possible for the human mind to conceive what I'm about to type, but this remake is even less playable, visually speaking, than Space Giraffe. In SG you could learn to see through the walls of acid-laced graphics; you can't see through the explosions in Tempest no matter how much you play.

Someone really should do a professional study of Stainless record, or something. It's quite amazing how they manage to fuck every game up, and it's always in new and different ways! Such a profound lack of understanding of game design is just shocking.

Just because you discovered XBLA last week doesn't mean everybody else was late to the party too. PQ placed well on the list when it was released.

I'm not sure I agree... simply because I can make a invalid move or heal myself and the computer will pick a completely different move to the one they suggested for me.

A frenetic, wire-frame adventure backed by industrial beats, the story of “Rez HD” takes players deep into the world’s computer network, where they must hack the system, alter the visual output and take over the music, creating their own rhythms and eye candy as they dig deeper into the cyberworld.

Are you playing on the hardest difficulty? If you're playing on a lower difficulty, the AI will choose randomly between several "best" moves. If you're playing on the hardest, it will always choose the best move.

Yep, just snagged the Tempest DEMO (Never blind purchase) and sure enough it's horrible. Not only is the original's emulation the pits (The visuals and sound are both botched) but much like Asteroids the Evolved version is as was mentioned pretty unplayable because of drop dead poor usage of unneeded and badly done uber-effects that all the kids these days love and crave.

I went through and played all the levels available, very VERY bad. Seriously, how can you botch this up?

My excitement for Warlords has just dropped BIG TIME. :(

How do guys like Stainless get business and even exist nowadays?

That's probably it. Still feels like it's setting itself up for a move though! Unless of course the computer does that for itself anyway (though it would make more sense to only do that when you have 2+ turns in a row).
