Well, the awards from the major gaming sites are beginning to trickle out, highlighted here in this thread are IGN's best XBLA games of 2007.

5. Undertow (I think IGN are the only ones who love this game this much)
4. Switchball (Nice to see somebody else love Switchball as much as the NEO GAF)
3. Pacman: Championship Edition (I am shocked that this didn't win outright0
2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Obviously some sites do not take direct ports of old games out of the equation)
1. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (The definitive version wins the definitive slot on IGN's list, possibly the right choice all and all.)

Rez HD's price--800 Microsoft Points

Metal Slug 3 and Omega 5 are insta-buys for me. I've got 1600 points saved up and I may have more coming. I will save them up and only buy when triple A releases are out.

Undertow really is a solid title when compared to the majority of other XBLA games though. A good netcode, working leaderboards (Switchball I'm looking at you), practically non-existent graphical performance issues (unless things get very hectic), drop-in drop-out co-op (also applied on the online multiplayer), bots, guest log-ins à la Halo, split-screen support, ... And it's fun.

The only major issue with Undertow is the rather small community, just like many XBLA games these days.

Been thinking about nabbing Small Arms for 400msp, for that price I would love to play it online but does anyone know if it's got an active multiplayer still?

No idea if it's still active, but the game isn't very good to begin with. Maybe you should buy something else.

how come I never hear people talk about Exit (aside from MicVlaD's mention up there)? the demo is a lot of fun
I think the "missing levels" situation back then (I'm aware that they're all available now) might have scared away a few customers.

Good game, but it's so face-crushingly hard sometimes.
Sometimes?

First few levels take 2-3 minutes to beat. Then they take a couple minutes to figure out. Then 10. Then 15. Before you know it it takes you a half hour to figure out how to finish a single level.

Infinite Interactive made Puzzle Quest (Steve Fawkner)... best konwn for the Warlords series. Great, Great developers.

Just did a quick google search of him and found forums. Looks like Steve posts in every topic. Awesome :D

Merry Christmas xbla'ers! My biggest surprise this year in gaming is how much fun I've had with the Arcade. I have my 360 for about 6 months now and xbla is actually where I spend most of my time. It started with the awesome Hexic HD freebie and that got me interested in other stuff on the arcade. PoP, SotN, Sonic, Geo Wars, Pacman, Switchball, ... So much fun. It's part of the appeal of the 360 to me. One day I feel like playing 'big' games all day, while the other it's just all arcade, or both.

So who exactly made Puzzle Quest and what have they done before? This game is like crack.

That's honestly why I didn't buy it. I had finals coming up when it came out...I made the mistake of playing the demo and getting hooked, making resistance that much harder.

Darunia: I feel the exact same way.

At the same time, I feel that XBLA has not reached even half its potential. I suppose that's a subject of another thread. Another thing that interests me is XBLA development. I'll be graduating soon with a Comp Sci degree and a minor in Business management and concentration in Software Engineering. And I'm totally eyeing XBLA sales and post mortems to get a feel for costs. I am really really tempted to start a company to address what I feel XBLA needs, but at the same time, I really need some real life experience at an existing game company before doing so. We'll see!

I understand, but for a guy like me who's still catching up on all the awesome games available, I don't notice the lack of good games that much recently. There are about 5 games I own that I haven't even touched yet, so there's no chance of me getting bored with xbla soon. Plus: Rez HD next month! raptorcamp.gif

Latest XBLA list from Major Nelson:

Top Arcade Titles (Full Versions)
1 - Sensible World of Soccer
2 1 Arkadian Warriors
3 - Tempest
4 2 Sonic The Hedgehog 2
5 4 UNO
6 5 Marble Blast Ultra
7 6 Bomberman LIVE
8 7 Bankshot Billiards 2
9 10 Worms
10 8 Geometry Wars Evolved

The arcade list is based on full versions purchased.

I weep for GripShift. :(

Undertow is disgustingly underrated. They should put it out for free for XBL Gold members to get people involved in the community.

And how is Worms always in the top 10? That game is a great example of how the long tail works. I just wish it was a full port of Worms Armageddon instead of the watered down PSP version.

True, but I feel that XBLA is slowly getting there. The kind of games I mentioned in one of my previous posts seem to be steadily growing in number, and the quick 'n easy ports of really old games aren't that prominent anymore (compared to 2006). We also know that there's still a reasonable amount of really good looking games heading our way (Omega Five, Rez HD, Ikaruga, N+, ...), so the situation we're in now, has vastly improved when compared to the past.

You're absolutely right that there's still a lot of untapped potential though. Microsoft really needs to get rid of their size limit (screw the Core users, seriously) and they need to track down games that are on the same level as the really good ones on PSN (Super Stardust HD for instance) or projects that look very unique like Echochrome. Even stuff like Aquaria (an indie PC game) would be a nice addition for the service, because more PC games like Eets: Chowdown, Switchball and N+ would be more than welcome.

Shit, you know what would make an awesome XBLA / PSN game? Limbo.

Very much so. Microsoft needs to advertise it more often (as well as the likes of Gripshift) or lower its price 6 - 8 months from now.

i've been out of the xbla loop for a few months now and i want to get back in but i'm not sure what to get.

can anyone suggest their top 3-5 xbla games that released in the past 3 months?

Picked up Pinball FX, and I'm somewhat dissapointed with the layout. Few Targets and bumpers and all ramps? Hmmm... Maybe I'll get used to it. It doesn't get much discussion on the forums.

Exit and Undertow are both very good.

Maybe we should start an Undertow fight club. The community is so small that it would be hard to find a random match.

Dude. First and second rules of Undertow fight club.

I still have to purchase Undertow. Don't punch me please.

Not enough Carcassonne love. One of the best new gaming (of any type) experiences I've had all year.

There was a thread that was pretty hot for a while, it was a score competition. I found it fun when it came to competing with friends. But honestly after one exploit was found, I played very very little thereafter.

MicVlaD: Now that you mention those games (Ikaruga, Rez) I'm inclined to agree that things are a whole lot better than the past, and things could be worse. I was just hoping for things like an MGS studio devoted to great XBLA content and such, but I suppose I'm being hasty and should be more patient.

Now that you mention Ikaruga and Rez...I REALLY hope people buy them!

I have a feeling that people have spent all their cash during the holidays and that it may affect sales for games coming out within the next month or so. I could be totally wrong...as these titles are only $10 and not $60.

The disrespect to Puzzle Quest is unreal.

My excuse is that I didn't want it during exams! :)

And now I have too many games to play, haven't even touched Mass Effect yet!

But Puzzle Quest has sold over 100,000 copies, which means over $1 million in revenue. I don't know how large of a cut MS gets from that, but that's not bad for a title that's only been out for 11 weeks! It has almost made as much rev as Cloning Clyde and Small Arms, both of which have been out for over a year.

Though I don't own either yet, :P I'd recommend GripShift and Puzzle Quest.

I suppose the best plan is to download the demos from our recommendations, and then see what you want to buy. For example, I didn't dig Undertow at all. And perhaps you may not dig my suggestions.

I love the fact that demos are a must for all XBLA games. Really good foresight on MS's part there.

Only Spongebob, which nobody has cared to download I'm assuming :)

Since the HD videos of Rez came out I can't wait for it at all. I LOVE the music. Everytime I hear the entrance to a new 'level' it gets me SO pumped.

I own both, and can heartily recommend them. Easily the best XBLA games I've played the last few months.

As for the XBLA game this week, it's "SpongeBob SquarePants Underpants Slam!"

It's doubtful that everyone's spent their cash, and that XBLA sales will take a nosedive. I am sure alot of lucky kids got 1600MSP cards during the holiday, and will cash them in for some great games.

Microsoft gets a 30% cut of every game. 50% if they build the netcode, and publish the game (and use someone else's IP) if memory serves me correctly.

I'm sure D3/II are happy that PQ has made over $1.5m in revenue. Atleast the way I've been tracking sales, it's still just below Nelson's top 10, and still moving more than 2,000 units/wk.

My tops in that period:

Super Puzzle Fighter
Puzzle Quest
Switchball

2008 title.

I think once the cap was upped to 150mb they decided they wanted to make use of it so they delayed it.
Castle Crashers has been a 2008 game from the very first time it was announced.
