Official Xbox Live Arcade Thread

Well, seeing how you lazy bums didn't make an official thread for Undertow in the Online / Matchup Forum, I made one myself over here. I'm going to update the gamertag list regularly, but don't except me to organize a weekly thing like the guys over at the TF2 360 topic. Someone else has to step up then.

Anyone pick up Arkadian Warriors? It's a pretty fun game in co-op, especially for $10. Just don't go in expecting GOTY material - it's a simple hack n slash game with different weapons, armor, etc.

I would also stay away from using the Archer or Sorceress, they kinda suck.

I realise there is the potential for leaderboard double ups (or more) on a single purchase. However, I doubt it inflates the figures by more than 10% over actual sales, and for the trend analysis I'm doing the level of accuracy is fine anyway.

Its about the closest thing people outside of Microsoft have to actual XBLA stats, and a number of publishers are using the trick too.

Of GripShift? It did well on PS3 at launch given the limited competition on the platform (on PSN and at retail). However, I'm expecting the XBLA version to do 3 to 4 times the volume of the PSN version lifetime.

Microsoft can't/won't share sales data of your own product with you??? Or am I reading this wrong?

Arcadian Warriors has a LOT of dashboard advertising, especially in my region (Canada). I have looked at the sales over the past few months and I would agree that the sales have fallen somewhat, because of all the great retail titles out, but at the same time, it is offset by a growing userbase.

I think this is a big reason why it's doing better than GripShift (I've yet to see a GripShift ad in the dashboard yet, but TONS of Arkadian Warriors ads).

If I wasn't a hardcore gamer that followed threads like these, the dashboard ads are how I'd be notified of new XBLA releases. The one click to go right to the download screen is convenient especially since MS recently changed the navigation in the latest dash update and made it a bit harder to get to the XBLA section.

I'm pretty sure publishers get sales data for their own products, I think Mario was talking about other XBLA games. Also I'm curious does Microsoft share trial downloads and conversion rate? Or just the purchases?

MS give you sales data on your own titles, but not anyone else's. And I need a broad selection of sales data when modelling sales for current and future products.

We haven't received our first sales report yet, but I imagine demo downloads are included amongst the standard data. Even if they weren't MS would happily share that information with us if we asked.

Do they only give you total cumulative sales data or can they break it down by gender/location/age, etc? I am assume they could read information associated with people's accounts.

I think the information could be handy if you realized a game meant for a certain audience ended up appealing more to another group. I mean if Gripshift sold mainly to underage goth/emo chicks on the west coast then Gripshift 2 might have different cars, music tracks, settings etc to satisfy the fanbase a bit better.

I always wanted to get into this sort of work. :)

I agree. I also agree with your perspective on the recent Dashboard changes, and perhaps this could be a topic for this very thread...

Do you guys think that the recent dashboard changes make XBLA harder to get to? I personally think so. I used to like going to the "Games" blade, and then choosing XBLA to go to my Arcade titles. Now, I have to click 3 times, and then scroll to the right to access content I've purchased.

The same applies to demos, but perhaps for this thread we'll focus on XBLA.

The Games blade now consists of:
"Games Library"
"Achievements"
"Games Played"
underneath those is an ad that takes up to two other slots that could be used for other catagories.

Games Library has a pretty full list of options as well, but again some of it is redundant, such as "Friends playing now...", I can view that in the Xbox Live blade right by my messages, which can be brought up at any time in the dashboard by hitting the Xbox 360 button on the controller.

Personally, I think that "Games Played" in the Games tab is redundant (Achievements basically does the same thing, I can view all my games played by looking at that list).

I would much rather have in the Games blade:
"Xbox Live Arcade"
"Demos and XNA"
"Xbox Originals"
"Achievements"
"Games Store"
"Xbox 360 Library"

Now, you might be wondering, where will ad be now? There's a spot on the top right hand corner where there's an "Xbox 360" logo, just use that real estate for an ad.

Each of the lists (XBLA, Xbox Originals, Demos and XNA) would have their own version of Twist where:
-the first entry is the most recently played game (of that catagory)
-is defaulted to "All Arcade games" (alternatively "All Originals" and "All Demos/XNA")
-can 'twist' to "recently played" and "recently downloaded" and then by genre (in the case of demos and XNA, can twist to XNA only, and Demos only).

"Xbox 360 Library" is another interface where you can view every single released Xbox 360 title, Arcade or Retail, and click on the title to view more information. The first screen could list "All Games", "New Releases", "Browse by Genre", and "Previews" and there can be adspace beneath those options, with the right side containing the "list of featured games" that we see when we go to Games Library. The information on the games should be just as detailed as their Xbox360.com entries. Some examples: Madden, NHL 08, Saint's Row, Condemned, Virtua Fighter 5 , my point is, the game should be listed, no matter how old.

With this setup, the only features you are missing (when compared to the current setup) are:
-Last game played (which can be listed at the top of the XBLA list, the Demos and XNA list, and the Xbox Originals list, with their respective last played game)
-Friends playing now (which can be accessed at any time by hitting the Xbox 360 button on the controller anyways, or perhaps added as a feature accessed by hitting "Y" on the controller at the Games blade to go to the same screen)
-Autodownloads: On/Off (can be placed in settings, or assigned to the "B" button on the Games Blade
-Recently downloaded and Recently played (I think these should be added to the specific lists I've defined above.
-list of featured games (that is represented in "Xbox 360 Library")

Factoring in how I address all the "missing" features, this solution would be far more beneficial to gamers (and MS, as the Game Store is forefront), and seems more more intuitive and elegant.

I expect we'll get sales by region, but won't get any more detail than that.

That sounds like... a lot, considering the user base difference (~2.5:1 and decreasing), and the competition (larger amount of downloadable games on XBLA).

It does sound like a lot though its just so much easier to buy content online on 360 rather than on PSN right now, and from what I've seen 360 users are more willing to spend too.

You might want to ask Sony to put the demo back up.

Reading the official GripShift thread here, it seemed like sales on PSN actually went up when they took the demo down.

There wasn't really an appreciable difference with or without the demo at the time. Given there are games with demos now on PSN as well as a wider catalogue to choose from I think a demo would be beneficial.

Brakara said:
I do agree with you though. I know I wouldn't have bought as many XBLA games as I have (~25) if there hadn't been any demos available.
Same here. There were far more games that I found surprisingly enjoying than those I expected to like, but didn't.

Well get on the phone then young man. :) The only games I buy without a demo are games I know I will love. No offense.

Same for me, it's the reason I did not purchase GripShift on the PS3 (by the time I got one the demo was pulled).

I had a pretty good feeling I'd enjoy the game based on videos I've watched and impressions from GAF, but I needed a demo to be sure that I'd like the controls and vehicle handling/physics. That's very important for a game like this IMO. I played like two levels in the trial and pressed the unlock button to buy it right away.

I was just trying out Spongebob trial (lol) while waiting for Metal Slug 3, and this message popped up:

img_028430865.JPG

Is that new? First time I've seen it in an XBLA game. It popped up like ten times (all for same achievement) which was getting annoying.

BTW, unless I was reading it wrong there was only 173 people in the spongebob leaderboards :lol

lol, now pop ups?

guess its a little clearer than adding the game on your played history but I can see how its gona be annoying, like XBLA trials need more buttons that allow you to unlock the full game.

If it doesn't show up in the next 10 minutes, the Major will be due for a court marshall.

Lately the Live updates have been going up at 1am PST /4 am EST - during daylight savings it was 2am/ 5am or something like that, the whole daylight savings thing is confusing enough.

There's another method that joaomgcd came up with that looks at Achievements earned for the title, and that at least one achievement must be earned on the game for it to be counted as a sale. It could be inaccurate because someone could have bought the game and not get 1 achievement for it, but it seems more accurate than the leaderboard method. That said, I would agree with his assessment.

It will be the same as counting leaderboards entries... Because one can buy a game and share between all acounts in that house (brothers, etc). All accounts will have achievements as well. So basically you are proposing the same thing, just a way more difficult to gather the data than the leaderboards.

And of course, you can set a margin of error using this "trick" and it will work well.

Speaking of Metal Slug 3 I downloaded the demo this morning. Pretty presentation, althought there are no options to change screen sizes/rendering filters (at least not in the demo).

I had fun with the demo. I would consider buying it if the achievements aren't soo insane. I realize that it is a pretty hardcore game, but give us some achievements for not so insane tasks.

Anyway I have too much to play this days and so little time. That is the reason I did not purchase GripShift yet, the season is filled with so many games at retail.

Got Metal Slug 3:

First off you can set how many continues you want(up to free play even). So there went that worry. This is great because just beating stage 3 took me several hundred continues.

SNK in their infinite wisdom gave XBLA fans the "sweat & tears" version of MS3 instead of the "blood" one. Needless to say I'm not happy about that one.

Multiplayer fans you might want to look out. Online play suffers from some nasty lag. We're talking delays in controls(which is game-breaking due to pinpoint movement is required to survive) sometimes enemy bullets will speed up/slow down. The entire thing is pretty erratic. The guy I was playing with quit after stage 3....I don't blame him. =/

This existed ever since the 360 launched, if I remember correctly.

Don't bother, all of them stink.

Besides ones that were free temporarily like Texas Hold'em and Carcassonne, the only remaining free XBLA games are Aegis Wing and Yaris, I think.

Anyone have any suggestions for a decent hack n slash/beat em up/whatever on XBLA? I tried the Arkadian Warriors demo and it was okay, but not worth $10. I just got Zuma the other day for the heck of it but I've got a 4000 point card coming in the mail so I'm looking for options.

Super Puzzle Fighter
Puzzle Quest
Catan
Carcasonne
Bomberman
Pac-man CE

In that order. Go.

Great point, never realized that when it was pretty obvious.

Thanks!

Meier: I suggest downloading the demos of all the games suggested. There are some well recieved games that I personally am not a fan of, and vice versa, some of my suggestions (ie. DOOM) other don't like. But when someone on here suggests a game, it's worth it to take the time and download the demo of that game (plus when you buy it, you basically have it without any waiting).

So after the dismal eye of GAF passed judement on Metal Slug 3, I decided to use those points to buy Pac-Man: CE.

OMG that game is amaaaazing. Amaaaazing. Amazing.

I am so, so sorry I did not pick it up sooner :(

FORGIVE ME, GAF!
