Question about Bomberman: If I buy one of the expansions and get the ninja character from it, am I stuck playing with only other people who bought the expansion? If not, will people that didn't buy the DLC see me playing as a ninja?

You can only play the new stages and game modes with people who have the respective expansions, but you can still play the original games/stages with everyone. And yes, they will not see your costume if they don't have the expansions, but you can still wear it.

Today, with the help of tipster Alan, we came across freshly picked media and freshly picked news pertaining to recently announced XBLA game Vigilante 8 Arcade. No blemishes here, everything looks ripe for the picking.

Over on V8 Arcade's official home, the Isopod Labs crew has been keeping a consistent stream of new media and updates flowing including a handful of screenshots which we've placed in our gallery below. Isopod also posted a little fanmail session where they confirmed that they're at a 9 on the universal 1 through 10 development scale of completion as the game should release sometime this Spring. Oh, and advice for Isopod Labs. Bring back the banned N64 V8 commercial, because we're suckers for cheezy bleeped out "holy sh*t!" moments.

Some highlights

X3F: A couple months ago we talked to you on the 360 Fancast and this was before, obviously, all this. And now all of the sudden your on stage in front of GDC during Microsoft's Keynote. They put together a pretty nice little video, introduce everyone to you. How are you coping?

Laughter

James Silva: I keep having to pinch myself to remind me that this is, in fact, real. I don't know, it's just been crazy. And, like, going on stage, I'm surprised that I didn't just sort of die. You know, my heart was just like "dun dun dun dun" you know, before going out. And, you know, I was afraid I was going to forget the lines or whatever. But yeah, it was awesome. In fact, now there's a problem, because this was my first GDC ever and I was on stage for the keynote, so I'm never going to have a GDC like this again probably. You know, keeping it all in perspective.

What's the process been like knowing that ... how long have you been building up to this moment right here? How long have they been talking about putting you in the keynote?

They like to surprise me [laughs]. I knew they wanted a trial, I think, about two ... they gave me about two weeks to put a trial together. And then, you know, they sort of ... they never really told me what was going to happen. You know, I just had the vaguest of ideas. And then, you know, the week I was out here, I got the big picture. And I was like, "Six thousand people?" you know, are you kidding me? So yeah.

How far along is it?

It's really ... well ... I've been saying that it's been at about, you know, 95% for the last several months, and every time I do about 1% of work, 2% more crops up.

But the final plan is to have online co-op?

Yeah, the co-op Arcade. And Arcade mode is something I kind of added a little bit late. That's sort of the blessing and the curse of being a one man development studio is you can say, "I have a crazy idea. Let's try it out."

Have you looked at PVP kind of stuff, like versus? Or is it just co-op?

It's all co-op. The problem with the Dishwasher, the character, is that he's just ... he's so powerful, and if you had two of them fighting, it would just ... it would be a mess.

Okay. Obviously, you're one guy making this game, but usually we have to ask, the question is what you're going to do next. Because, you know, if you talk to someone at Lionhead, yeah, Fable 2 is coming out, but they know what they're making after Fable 2. Have you put much thought into that, or are you just all into Samurai right now?

Yeah, I mean, I'm just totally focused on getting it done, but I definitely have some thoughts about what to do next. You know, now and again throwing around the idea of a sequel or a trilogy or a series of seven games that's far more epic than anything people can imagine. That was a joke.

IGN XBOX 360 Previews Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/855/855515p1.html

February 27, 2008 - To late-night tokers, Happy Tree Friends is as familiar as their own toes. But not everyone is aware of this Internet-turned-TV cartoon phenomenon. The Happy Tree Friends are, at first glance, a group of cuddly and colorful forest creatures. You know, the kind of rabies-free critters kids love to pet. Then one of the Tree Friends accidentally walks into a saw blade, slicing itself in half and spurting blood everywhere. They may look cute, but Happy Tree Friends is not for kids. It's for adults who like to laugh their asses off in the middle of the night. The blood-splattered mayhem of the Tree Friends is set to come to XBLA and PC in April.

Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm is built off the Lemmings model of casual gaming. You must guide a quintet of Tree Friends -- Flippy, Flaky, Mole, Nutty, and Russell -- safely through 30 perilous levels. You play as Lumpy, though you exist off-screen and act as the hand of God. Equipped with four powers -- freeze, nitro, fire and "action" -- you must neutralize the death traps that threaten the hapless Tree Friends. They are fairly mindless, so it's up to you to quickly judge the best use of your powers to neutralize threats quickly and at the proper time.

Each stage begins with a flythrough, allowing you to quickly assess the numerous pitfalls that lay ahead. Your four different skills (or powers) are going to be used heavily throughout each level. Freeze is not only good for putting out fires and closing off open steam vents, but can also be used to keep the Tree Friends from moving across the screen. Just freeze the suckers in place. This is quite helpful since each level contains time-sensitive puzzles such as swinging blades. Nitro is used for explosions to blow up some impediments in the way of the Tree Friends. Fire is useful as a motivational tool. Drop some flames behind the Tree Friends and they will move more quickly. Using fire and freeze powers in tandem, you can manage the tempo of your friendly little cadre. The action power is used to activate buttons and levers in the environment.

The levels in Tree Friends are colorful and of the type you'd see in the saturated, happy land of family friendly animated films. But there is so much blood. In fact, there are about a half-dozen custom deaths in Tree Friends. Oh yes, there will be blood. You only need a lone Tree Friend to reach the exit and beat a level. That may often be the case as the five Friends seem attracted to anything that might prove lethal.

Happy Tree Friends is a strange little game. The gameplay is simplistic -- it really is just a riff on Lemmings -- but it's unbelievably twisted. In "Alls Whale that Ends Whale" one of these massive mammals of the deep has fallen onto a seaside resort. During the Tree Friends escape from this level, they come across the beached whale. You need to cause the beast some pain so an empty pool fills with its blood to allow the Tree Friends to swim across. What makes this all the more horrific is that it's hilarious. It sounds like a horrid offense to marine life, but when you see it in the context of the game, it's riotously funny.

The Happy Tree Friends game includes a "hella funny" exclusive episode of the show. The videogame-focused episode is unlocked when you score a bronze medal in each level. Now you have something to work for, kids! The first half the special episode is expected to be released shortly as a teaser. The full version of Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm is expected in April.

lol, how in the hell are they including any video in the game and still keeping it under 150MB?

Happy Tree friends was Flash though, wasn't it? It doesn't take a whole lot, shouldn't be more than 10 megabytes. at the max.

And hell, Rocky and Bullwinkle actually has a LOT of footage along side the Flash stuff - though admittedly of low quality stock footage type stuff.

Thanks for the Braid link. Very excited about that one. Digging the art style and concept. Still unsure about the overall gameplay from what I've seen but color me excited about the possibilities.

I just realized that every game that won an Xbox Live Arcade Award was from an already established brand or franchise.

Bomberman
Castlevania
Pac-Man
TMNT
Worms

What does that say about the popularity of original games on the service?

Capcom announces Bionic Commando Rearmed contest

Contest: Design a Challenge Room for Bionic Commando Rearmed + Get it in the Game!
February 27th, 2008 Seth Killian

If you were like me as a kid, you wasted a lot of time sketching out new levels for NES games and recreating them with Legos. They called you a fool then, but now its your chance to prove them all wrong and shine! Capcom and the Bionic Commando Rearmed team (the BCR team) are inviting you to design your own challenge level for Bionic Commando Rearmed™.

The challenge rooms are basically timed obstacle courses for you to flex your swinging skills. Hit the jump for details about the building blocks you can use to put your level together and full contest rules!

Here are the details about the building blocks you can use to put your level together:

1. Wall segment, used for walls, “unconnectable”. Encasing the entire challenge in solid walls is mandatory, although holes in the ground work as an obstacle the Player may be required to overcome.
2. Roof and floor segment, used as floor and roof, “unconnectable”
3. Basic platform, the Player can hook onto this one and scale it
4. Retracting platform, folds into the wall after a set period of time so the player gets disconnected if he has hooked onto the platform, or makes the player fall down if he stands on top of it for too long. Parameters to set is if it will be automated or start as the player connects to it, how fast it will move in and out. They can be timed to create sophisticated puzzles.
5. Start/finish line, cross the finish line and you trigger when the challenge starts. Cross the finish line and the challenge is completed. Having a start and a finish line is mandatory.
6. Air vent, makes the player leap 2m into the air and 3m forward as he walks over the airgust.
7. Retracting platform, same as #4, but twice as wide.
8. Block, used to hook onto and “pull yourself towards”, or to hinder the Player from advancing
9. Spike block; if the Player touches this one he instantly dies
10. Moving platform, a platform that moves back and forth between to points in wanted direction; either horizontal, diagonal or vertical. Speed is adjustable.

For reference, there are Challenge Rooms screenshots here, and of course the example video.

Level editor skills? Feh! Have writing utensil, will travel. Be as impressionistic or as specific as you like. Sketch it, MS Paint, or scrawl it on the wall of a cave–we don’t care–just send in an image of your idea to contest@capcom.com

The BCR team will choose a winning entry and bring it to life, using your idea as the inspiration for a finished level. You get your name in the credits, the level goes in the game, and you become internet famous (it’s like regular famous, only with less groupies).

Contest begins at 12:01 AM Eastern Standard Time (“EST”), Wednesday, February 27, 2008 and ends 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (PST), Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

Full rules start here:

Yes, yes I do.

Anyway:

Quote:
The longest and most disjointed episode yet sees Freeverse's Bruce Morrison drop by during GDC to chat about the science of porting Marathon: Durandal to Xbox Live Arcade. Then the usual crew very nearly manages to say something insightful about Nintendo's classic stable of characters vis-a-vis Smash Bros. You'll love it! You'll hate it! You'll say cranky things on the message boards about it!

I can still grab it...I would LOVE to grab it. But so far the general concensus seems to be the online is a wasteland. Single player Bomberman is about as much fun as playing tic-tac-toe by yourself.

The community was really active a few months ago. I don't know how it could have died off so quickly. Unless everyone is too addicted to CoD4 and Halo 3 to bother with XBLA.

MS burying the Arcade even deeper in the menu and lackluster pre-release marketing and post-release marketing are to blame I think. The sticker-shock of many 800 and 1200 MS point games is also a big problem (not sure how MS can convince folks that $10 is a movie ticket and $15 is a DVD).

XBLA needs a blade of it's own, MS needs to improve XBLA marketing, and they need to implement a program to continually reduce prices over time.

$10 is pretty close to the price of a movie ticket where I live. What MS needs to do is to get people motivated to regularly add points. Believe it or not, the psychological difference between 1 point and free is bigger than the difference between 400 and 800 pts. So maybe MS should regularly offer free things to people with at least 1 point on their gamercard.

http://www.xblah.net/2008/02/gametrailers-new-puzzle-quest-galactix.html

Just a short interview with Senior Producer Tim Ramage about Galactix - not much we haven't heard in the past week, but this quote is reassuring:

"Puzzle Quest: Glactix will be out in the fall this year on Nintendo DS, Xbox Live Arcade and PC!"

So Puzzle Quest: Galactix should be hitting near the end of the year - plus on all systems at once. The initial Puzzle Quest announcement mentioned that XBLA would be coming later on. Good news!

So, Capcom says:

The long-awaited Rocketmen®: Axis of Evil will finally be available to the general public next week. The game will be on LIVE on Wednesday, March 5 and on the PSN Store on Thursday, March 6.

I can not say, I have seen no definitive signs yet, that is a game that could come next week or three months from now or something like that.
