what are some good xbox "hidden gems"?
Thinking I might bust out a drink and play some Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2X tonight, which is probably my favorite Tony Hawk game ever. I'll need to post my Xbox collection someday (it's not big, but I really enjoy all of the games I own)
Off the top of my head:what are some good xbox "hidden gems"?
Does it qualify as port begging when I'm sad that a game was never ported rather than "I want X or Y game ported to Z console now"?
I'm still butthurt that Sega never released Shenmue II (or Shenmue I for that matter) or Panzer Dragon Orta on PS2. The OG Xbox audience were never the intended target for those games. Not to mention the fact that the PS2 sold 12 times more. Those games deserved more exposure. A shame they died right there.
I finally bought Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. Only took me 12 years, but I plunked down that $15 for a sealed, non-platinum hits copy.
It was the dumbest thing. Back when I finished playing through THPS3 like 24 times or something this summer, I thought to myself, "man, I wish there was more of this." I've watched my friend play about 10 minutes of THPS4, and that's the entirety of my exposure to it. We're gonna fix that.
Next on the list of games to buy is either Crazy Taxi 3 or KOF 02/03... or maybe both at once.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 is dope and it's probably the last "true" Tony Hawk experience (before they felt the need to add a story mode to the game and what not). The ability to be able to roam the level for as long as you want before you start a goal kills the rush of having to complete goals within two minutes, but it's still fun
And yeah, there's no way the PS2 would've been able to do Shenmue 2 as much justice as the Xbox did. And from what I understand, the Xbox was more similar to the DCs architecture than the PS2, which is why there were some atrocious ports of DC titles on PS2 (Le Mans 24hr comes to mind, and I think F355 was not that much better). It seems a little vindictive to still want those games on vastly inferior hardware.
What? That's ridiculous! Why would I want Panzer Dragon Orta on PS2 now? Hell no. What I was lamenting was that those games were ignored back then more than they should've due in no small part because of them being exclusive to the OG Xbox and yes many of us, including me, wished they would appear on PS2 as well at least. It seems a little vindictive to still want those games on vastly inferior hardware.
The PS2 was still way ahead of the DC in power but with a very different architecture. If they wanted more exposure they should've make it work and because of that (and other decisions) the Panzer Dragoon and Shenmue franchises died with the OG Xbox. And yeah, there's no way the PS2 would've been able to do Shenmue 2 as much justice as the Xbox did. The PS2 might've been inferior but it was by far the most popular console worldwide whilst the OG Xbox was only a modest success in the U.S. and a failure in Japan and Europe (mostly).
Eh, I bought the Xbox specifically because it was a Sega machine. Hell, I bought JSRF before I bought the console itself.

yeah Panzer Dragoon Orta on PS2 would probably be a bad time.
i made it to Ruins in ep.1 of PSO. this game has gradually gotten a lot better, though I found out that I fucked up getting a good weapon simply by not doing missions in a certain really weird order, instead of sequentially. (the soul eater partisan)
You're playing PSO on your own? Is it actually good when you play it like that?
either way you play it, it's gonna be a shallow loot grind RPG where you run through fairly boring dungeons. playing solo, I find it's a perfect "turn your brain off" game. Great music, classic phantasy star 90s sci fi anime style, and adequate combat+loot.
That's kinda exactly what I want. I don't care about story or whatever. I just wanna grind like crazy in an RPG that's fun to play.
Yeah, it's unfortunate that the 2 minute rush to complete every goal is gone, but whatever. The structure still seems intact. It sounds like a lot of people still liked THUG, so I'm kinda tempted to at least try the first, if I still dig THPS4.
Also, I hope I'm not disappointed by the soundtrack in THPS4.
Opened up my xbox and found a half corroded capacitator. It's gonna suck when this thing dies. I got it for $50, hard modded, with the advanced A/V pack and controller S!
same i remember buying hella sega titles
i don't think rent a hero was supposed to be any good but I wish it came out instead of getting canned
Fix the capacitors or find someone to do it for you.
Can y'ALL recommend me some titles?
I have Shenmue 2, Genma Onimusha and Dead or Alive 3. I'm planning to get Fatal Frame 1 (Maybe 2 if the Wii version isn't worth it, and Maybe Silent Hill 2 if I don't get the GH version). Anything else I should be picking up? I can only think of Conker Live and Reloaded.
Mechassault 1&2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Star Wars games(Knights of the Old Republic 1&2 and Republic Commando), and Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth are really good. Some other games would be 007: Nightfire, Darkwatch, Nightcaster 1, and Breakdown.
I haven't played through them yet but there is also Nightcaster 2, Grabbed by the Goulies Blink 1&2, Otogi 1&2, Crimson Sea, and Stubbs the Zombie. There are many others but a few to avoid would be Robotech: Battlecry, Spawn: Armageddon, and Dino Crisis 3(I can't believe how bad this game was) all are badly designed games.
why oh why won't Microsoft make the Xbone compatible with the OG Xbox? <SIGH>
Huh... I thought Robotech: Battlecry was supposed to be good.
At least, that's what I recall being the case in 2002. I suppose that was a while ago, though :-/
Anyway, the obvious recommendation is Ninja Gaiden Black, because it's one of the best games of all time. And Outrun 2.
This thread earned a new poster:Man, nobody posts in this thread anymore.

From what I remember, it was VERY good. Basically NBA Jam, but for Soccer. And with Sega characters (I think?).Speaking of Sega games, I recently stumbled upon Sega Soccer Slam. Was that game any good? It came out in 2002, but I somehow completely blocked its existence out of my mind until now.
Did you bring it to the front? My Goodwill keeps cords and controllers at the register and gives them to you when you buy the system. Got my Xbox and 2 controllers from them for $15 2 years ago.I'm been dying to get into original xbox but I can't seem to find anything locally, yesterday I found a black one at goodwill, no cables, no controllers, no games, for $30. Without any way of testing it, i had to let it go.
What's a reasonable price for the regular model?

So in the same day I managed to accidently delete my softmod, and my laser broke. Before I would just clean the laser, but that no longer does the trick. Can you buy any IDE DVD Drive and put it in? Or does it have to be specific?
Tony Hawk 4 and Crazy Taxi 3 got here today... and both without any problems. That's got to be some kind of record for Ebay.
It feels kind of weird to have a new Tony Hawk game. After 13 years, THPS 1-3 was kind of the entire thing in my mind. Now I have to accommodate for the fact that there's more.
I mean personally, I would (maybe) stop after THUG, cause the series just really goes downhill after that one (I personally like Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, but it's nowhere near the level of the first five games)

Years back, when you could still find regular ass DVD-ROM drives there where 2 "compatible" drives, the most common was the LG GDR-8163B and flash it to have FULL drive capabilities, that is, play OG games and avery media disc you could find. Sadly, these drives are not anymore around.
Here's the full tutorial to flash and to mod your case to fit it inside with full button support:
