OG Xbox Production Factory

Superb console...

Edit - Xbox Live was such a game changer for console gamers!!!

Rainbow Six 3, Black Arrow, Ghost Recon, Island Thunder, Halo 2, Chaos Theory, PGR2 and even midnight club were so good online, Xbox Live really was great fun back then it was new and felt fresh and was clearly well thought out service.

Take me fucking back... great period of gaming probably the best for me.

Nice to see a video about the good old days when computing devices were assembled in the west by humans instead of in the far east by machines.

Cool video. It's honestly surprising how low-tech the production line seemed (though it was probably viewed as cutting-edge at the time). The way the hard drives were imaged, especially.

The OG Xbox was great! Xbox Live legit pushed the state of the art forward for online gaming, especially for a couch console. Halo was incredible and Halo 2 was amazing with Live. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Live was awesome, Return to Castle Wolfenstein Live too. Even Counterstrike on OG Xbox was great, especially for the platform and making use of the microphone. It was just way ahead of its time.

Got cut off a little too soon for my tastes, but ultimately it was the right move for Microsoft to move onto the 360 as early as they did.

The OG Xbox and 360 were something else. Never thought Xbox would end up the way it did now. Having a PS2 and OG Xbox along with a PS3 and Xbox 360 was peak gaming for me. We can sadly never have those times back. But they were good
times nonetheless.

The footage was actually shot in Hungary, not the US.
I had a console made in that exact factory. Different factories were known for different defects. The mexican made launch window units would have issues with the surround sound not working, but would work fine on stereo, a LOT of the Hungary made ones had issues with disc drives failing. My friend and I combined our two consoles at some point since he was running surround sound and his mexican made xbox was having major issues with it, , and so I sold him the one I had (life circumstances made it make sense even if it doesnt now, 25 years later) and after a while the hungarian one had issues with the drive, so we put the mexican xbox drive in it. At the time, on smaller forums and in IRC chat etc a lot of people reported the same issues with the same country of origin. - Im sure it wasnt exclusive to each location but it seemed oddly specific.

The Xbox utilized four different disc drives. I wonder if those different drives were allocated to various factories. Everyone wanted to avoid those Thomson drives.

Looking back at it today, it's kind of incredible that we got such an overpowered piece of hardware at the time. I'm glad Microsoft was so desperate to make inroads into gaming and was willing to eat so much of the cost of putting out a box like this. Big fan.

Man what great memories. The original Xbox got me back into gaming. Yes I am an old timer, lol. Sadly I am losing my interest in gaming. I dont know if it's the price situation, my age 55, or the direction of Xbox. Most likely, a combination of all three. I will say I got a steam deck early last year and have started to really like telltale games. I have never tried games like that before. I have played A wolf among us, The walking dead, and I am playing Star trek now. I will probably give Xbox one more shot depending on how their next gaming device is.

Still have my crystal Xbox, manufactured 2004

They used different combinations of DVD drives and video encoder chips. The Thomson drives are supposed to be poor from a reliability perspective, whilst the Philips, Samsung and Hitachi drives fare much better. The last revision of Xbox have a custom video encoder which has issues with certain games running in 480p like Quantum Redshift, never heard of surround sound problems though.

OG Xbox was such a cool console. Ripping CDs for custom soundtracks and playing them in project gotham was sick.

Also remember using XBconnect to fool Xbox into online Halo 1.

Back when it was worth 50 bucks a year. The cross game features were unmatched, even on PC.

I've got a crystal one which is my Outrun 2 SP machine. I love it.

Got a question though - it's got a brown stain inside the clear casing on the underside. It does make a bit of a humming sound when running. Does this sound like capacitor issues??? Ganes run fine. Cheers, if anyone has had similar issues??

Back when games had dedicated server/hosts.... I had 1mb back in 2003 and my upload was decent so I could host 10 players on RS3 and GR/GRIT was so much fun choosing game mode and map anytime.

COD3 on the original Xbox was my first online game, the pure fundamentals, the slower/heavier guns, I was raised on that and not today's dopamine-loops, so a lot of people today don't realize their was an xbox before the 360, and that things like killstreaks didn't exist and this was on a straight up wired connection, no wifi nonsense.
