Still have my crystal Xbox, manufactured 2004

They used different combinations of DVD drives and video encoder chips. The Thomson drives are supposed to be poor from a reliability perspective, whilst the Philips, Samsung and Hitachi drives fare much better. The last revision of Xbox have a custom video encoder which has issues with certain games running in 480p like Quantum Redshift, never heard of surround sound problems though.
At the time, in the moment (rather than now from a historians chair) the surround sound issue was very prevalent and many people never knew about it because it was not that common to use it then- But among those who were using it , it was not uncommon to hear it was non functional, I dont remember if it was just cutting out or chopping or giving no sound or what the issue was exactly as it was actually my friend with the issue, but my xbox worked perfectly
on the same setup, same AV output box (as you recall it was like this big dongle you used for component and surround not just a cablle but like a BRICK thing) - but in any case his worked fine outside of that initially and mine
worked fine for everything but the drive eventually went out . I prefer THOSE issues to the stuff like RROD from later but it was still a challenge for us as young guys... I was a computer guy in college, PC gamer and generally had no issue with tech so figuring it out or doing the swaps was nothing, but it was still just one of those hurdles in your life you remember when XBOX was life and your main escape some days.
