Old Amiga classics on GBA

I went to a Dixon's the other day (won't happen again anytime soon) and found a few interesting games. Defender of the Crown and James Pond: Codename Robocod, the original Amiga versions ported more or less straight to GBA. DotC had redrawn fencing sequences (suck!) but seemed to keep the nightgown shots of the girls. Robocod looked basically the same.

Has anyone played these? Are they worth getting for an old Amiga fan? Obviously not at the £17 price I found them at, but maybe cheap on Ebay somewhere?

I played both recently - DotC is a good version, though they did change a few things (prettied it up for the most part) - can't remember exactly what though. I was never any good at the fighting sequence :/

Robocod like all the other Amiga -> GBA conversions is a straight port. Still a fun game that is JAMMED with secrets. Damnit, now you've made me want to play the Mega Drive version again :) Worth the price.

I dunno, I played the Amiga version to death. Only thing I really liked was cheating my way to the bouncy worlds and playing the Jingle Bells song. It was my regular Christmas game for quite some time.

But Defender looks good in the screens at Mobygames. Might be worth a shot.

Any other Amiga ports that are actually worth their price?

I really enjoyed Archer Macleans Pool, though not having battery backup made the price sting. A bit.

And how can anyone pass up IK+ ?

(Ignoring the crap IK+ GBC and International Karate Advance, which tried to complicate things and just ended up ruining everything, which pains me because the guys who made those titles made Mayhem in Monsterland and if that game doesn't get ported to GBA soon something's very seriously wrong with the world and I'm digressing)

Sorry. I meant Ignition, not Empire.

Did the Gen/MD version have different levels than the Amiga version? I bought the GBA version as a christmas present for a friend who was and is a huge fan of the Genny RoboCod, and he's done nothing but rant ecstatically about how different a lot of the stuff is.

The most he was expecting was just a nice portable version (without that Nomad blur), but the way he's been flipping out it sounds like it almost feels completely new.

Either way, judging by his reaction it sounds like a definite buy if you're a fan of the original(s?).

Can't say I played the Amiga version much, but I did play the Mega Drive version this morning and yeah it does feel different. Hmm, have to dig up the Amiga version out of the closet and try it :)

Crawfish was porting some more Bitmap Brother's games to GBA like Chaos Engine, unfortunately they went under before they were finished.

Robocod was also released for playstation last year. It has some graphical improvments, a new (rather ugly looking) intro and you are rescuing elves instead of p-p-picking up penguins (remember the original game was sponsored).

Ack, I'm not a fan of Robocod (the GBA version is pretty boring) - the third James Pond (Operation Starfish) , the one not dissimilar too Super Mario World & SMB3 is certainly one of my favourite games of all time.
