Dark Omen was pretty good, probably more so if you're not a fan of RTS, as I'm not and yet enjoyed it as it's pretty simple and straightforward. You just fill your available unit slots before every mission with units you have recruited over its linear story with branching paths, upgrade them a bit with XP gained or a magic item found, pay to recruit reinforcements for any damaged unit if any of its numbers survived, otherwise it's gone, etc. Wizards are a whole unit by themselves cos they're OP so if they die they're gone, and other such neat stuff. Cool FMV and voiced story scenes before/after missions. I played it on PSX, it had a meh button mashing morale system when units clashed that's probably better if it's not in the PC version but likely didn't do much in mismatched units/odds anyway.
my first entry is fire warrior, which ever since, i like TAU most, well, their mecha designs reminds me to macross/robotech suit.
i was into DoW2 when i was younger, and spent so many times with it. I rarely visit WH4K again after DoW2
