My 2 cents on this:
They are not obsessed with gaming per se, they are keen to diversify their wealth and their economies as a global trend is emerging that crude oil will no longer be THE solution and THE means of choice when it comes to energy for future decades / centuries.
The west is moving in a significantly different direction and others will (have to) follow.
It is therefore important for Saudi Arabia to remain relevant in the future and it is investing heavily in expensive projects (search for "project NEOM") and sports so that it is not just dependent on the one thing that it (still) seems to have in abundance.
Esports is a small part of this that they are taking with them on this path or in this attempt to establish a broad economic base
