Before Earthsea tonight, there was a SciFi promo featuring Sean Bean where they had a montage of ideas behind upcoming SciFi projects.

The first one they showed was Red Mars.

Wow. If that is really happening, it'd be awesome.

If you're not familiar with Red Mars, it's the first book in a trilogy of "hard sci-fi" about the terraforming and colonization of Mars over a couple centuries. The first book is Red Mars, book two is Green Mars, and the third book is Blue Mars. There was also a fourth book that was a anthology titled The Martians.

Edit: After a little research it appears that they announced last year that it was in development for 2004/2005 as a mini-series.

Awesome, hard books to read, but awesome...

1. I hope they don't mess up Red Mars. It'd be a hard book to adapt.

2. If they don't mess it up, hopefully they'll do all three.

Apparently the trilogy is being used in some college science classes now.

bah if it's "hard sf" then some of the stuff out there must be diamond SF or something. I found all three, red, green, blue easy to read. Don't take this as criticism, because I love those books, I'm on my third time through right now!

I read the first 2 when I was 15 or 16, they were hard then, probably easy now that I'm 25. Should try again...

"hard sci-fi"? What's that?

"hard sci-fi" is another term for "realistic sci-fi" where the story is more about exploring possible scientific advances/theories. In the case of the Mars trilogy, it's terraforming.

Hard scifi + Soap Opera = Mars Trilogy.

It's a rather odd mix.
Heh, it's a damn good mix though. You can also throw economics, religion and politics into the mix there as well. The level of detail in those books is simply wonderful.
