On the Contrary, 2021 was a great gaming year. What do you think?

What is the underrated game of this year for you? It has to be underrated so dont start saying Dread ok.

For me it was Scarlett Nexus. Took me by suprise. What was yours?

Edit: The title needs fixing Mod of War Mod of War

Have that one on the list for quite some time. Need to grab it when it's cheaper. I'm curious for it.

Despite not being a totally surprise to me, I would have to go with Lost Judgement, just because I feel the game doesn't get the recognition it truly deserves.

Inscryption, it's had some low-key recognition but it's the 2nd most creative game I played this year after Psychonauts 2.

The problem is it's a lofi card game meta-comedy-horror and saying literally anything beyond that is spoiling it so it's a super hard sell.

Spoiling the end of the game is a pretty good way to turn people off playing the game, use the tags.
Didnt spoil anything youre free to click or not mam, also games been out for awhile now

Dungeon Explorers or Voice of Cards, not sure which one I enjoyed more (probably Dungeon Explorers).

Also shout out to Earth Defense Force: World Brothers, I was skeptical at first due to how different it is, but the gameplay mechanics around building a party and character switching are really fun and interesting.

Edit:
Returnal is my GOTY and I don't see it listed as a contender, so Returnal.
This is the truth honestly, but I assumed Returnal was well known enough.

Dungeon Encounters

Very underrated game that I'm enjoying a lot. It's not for everyone, but for the people that it clicks with, I think they will be surprised with the creativity, surprises, and difficulty in the battle system.

The game is even underrated by RPG nerds, who have mostly ignored it so far.

I agree. It came out barely a couple of weeks ago and barely anyone is talking about it anymore. I had so much fun with it and absolutely loved the story and overall presentation. The game has so much charm, it's like the complete opposite of The Avengers which was completely flat, boring, and soulless.

The only thing that didn't work as good was the combat, which did feel a bit too easy on normal and too repetitive. I'm definitely gonna play it on one of the higher difficulties next time.

I've only played a few of the games that released this year, but there haven't been that many I wanted to play. R&C, Psychonauts 2 and ME: Legendary Edition were the ones I enjoyed the most. A lot of what I wanted to play was delayed if we're being honest. But I think it has been pretty good.

SMT5 is my personal GOTY but if you want talk about games that are criminally getting ignored is.

This game is sooooooo good, I even go as far say this beat first trilogy as my favourite AA game.

Another one is:

The performance in its open world section is not the best but the actual combat is FANTASTIC! The bosses are challenging and fun, this by far my favourite NMH game.

Really Enjoyed Death's Door

It's not particularly original in its design, basically a more linear and combat focused 2D Zelda type game, but I really enjoyed the world, characters, tight gameplay, fun bosses and decent number of secrets to find.
Really loved the soundtrack too, makes exploring the locations feel enjoyably chill while still picking up at the right moments.

I was on the fence about Returnal all the way till the final round of previews. I was never a fan of bullet hell mechanics or shmups in general and the whole concept just sounded as an interesting game I will personally never like.

Eventually got it on day one and it's easily the best gaming experience I've had this year, a masterpiece, beating Demon's Souls as my favorite current-gen only title.

Kena was also so much better than I ever expected, the surprise of the year for me. I've seen plenty of it before launch and thought it's ok but nothing to book time for. A buddy of mine wrote me gushing over it going a couple of hours in, about how good the combat is. So I pulled the trigger and all I could do is thank him for it later.
