Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

I'm not sure if Daikatana qualifies for being completely forgotten, but you could make a movie out of the pre-release hype/drama/reception for that game.

Ugh, don't remind me of the start of SEGA's downward spiral back in the mid 2000's.

Which sucked, cause Panzer Dragon Orta, Gun Valkyrie and JSRF were great.

Was Gun Valkyrie hyped? I don't remember, but it sure is forgotten.

Yeah, when you bring it up maybe. Where are the spamfest topics about the X1 savior though? I see no topic talking about it's expansions, multiplayer, or anything. The game is forgotten less than 6 months after it's release.

No need for console warrior crap here, man. And naming a highly successful game that's going to turn into a franchise soon enough just because it was on the X1 is rather strange.

All three console publishers have had their flubs, no need to reach far to shit on one.

is it time to bring up Oooga Booga as well?

SEGA had some flubs in the Dreamcast era, but for the most part their early 00's output was quite impressive. It wasn't till the Shadow The Hedgehogs did we get to the point of battered wife syndrome.

Which reminds me, I loved the 3D Shinobi game even if it was eclipsed by Ninja Gaiden.

...as soon as people even heard Marvel was coming it died. Heck at the time everyone was mainly playing Street Fighter 4 so I dont even think its presence was as strong as it truly deserved to be.

Such a good game. So short lived.

Didn't Matt_IGN practically beg Nintendo fans to buy this game in order to "send a message" that there was an audience for core games on Wii? Or was that MadWorld?

Yeah, it was Matt. He really pushed for this game and wanted it to succeed. Maybe it would have had a chance to sell well had it not been constantly delayed.

Did it sell well? I remember it getting sequel that nobody cared about.

Don't think so, no. And the only thing people remember about the sequel was the WTF ending with space marine presidents.

I can think of Blinx for the Xbox, was hyped to become the Mario / Crash Bandicoot of Microsoft. However that game ended up gaining very little traction and they quickly scrapped him as a potential mascot.
It had a sequel, but that also went completely under the radar.

RIP in peace brave cat.

Blinx_120.jpg

I retract my earlier MAG statement. This is the one. I had literally forgotten Blinx ever existed. Holy cow that's crazy. I genuinely hope they give him another shot on the Xbone.
They won't.

Console warrior lol? Did I say only xbox? Exactly. The games fanbase pretty obviously deserted it for the most part. It's crazy how it gets no attention now.

Both Floigan and TJ&E 3 were developed in whole or part by Visual Concepts. The Dreamcast era was kind of the last hurrah for an autonomous Sega of America and its second party liasons.

Hard to believe one of the most prominent (and historically, the most profitable) parts of the old Sega is basically a shell now, especially after the last round of layoffs.

For a forgotten game, you guys sure kept it in your mind long enough to flood this thread with it.

If you don't see the irony there, I don't know what to tell you.

I remember quite a bit of hype for this game.

There was supposed to be a PS2 port but it never happened, and plans for sequels were cancelled. I guess the game didn't sell well enough on PC.

Tons of people still play Titanfall and the OT is very active here, I imagine there are other communities still going online as well. Sounds like you take one look at the front page on GAF and decide no one is playing it any more, there were topics the other day for the up coming DLC and the other week for the massive new patch. Give it a rest.

It would've had better legs if it wasn't a Wii exclusive.

Really, this needs to stop now.

Show me a single person who is even mildly interested in video games and doesn't know Titanfall.

Eh, not that I have anything against titanfall, but I could show you some of my friends if you really wanted. Let's not pretend that it's as well-known as Mario.

One of a number of a Saturn refugees that ended up on other systems when Stolar pulled the plug. Received a lot of middling reviews in game magazines when Core Design was coming hot off of Tomb Raider 2.

This game was much anticipated. For years and years, everyone preached it's upcoming dominance. Then it came out and almost everyone agreed that GT 5 Prologue and Forza had already been better games for years by that point.

Heralded as the next big fighter, and being developed by a co-creator of Mortal Kombat, many were excited about this game. The concept was revolutionary: a fighter in which you could cripple your opponent's limbs, making the fights as much strategic as they were brutal. Of course, upon release, we realized that it wasn't fun, didn't have likable characters, and barely delivered on the original claims in the most basic of ways.

I honestly loved that game as a kid. Haven't revisted recently enough to see if it holds up in my book.

Judging most PSX games I loved then, probably not.

A very recent entry is Firefall. The game had massive booths at a lot of trade shows and tons of advertising. It was hyped up to be the next big F2P thing.

It's apparently launching later this month and absolutely no one cares.

Spore immediately comes to mind. Tons of hype....years of hype, and nothing to show for it today.

Sonic 4 is kinda valid. It certainly didn't bring Sonic "back" like Sega hoped.

Kinect (+games) would definitely fall into this category now that there's the $400 XB1 SKU.

Are you new to GAF? These type of responses were so predictable even the OP called them out.

Oh yeah, I remember this. Magazines were tearing it to shreds when it was released.

I wouldn't agree with this. GT5 sold over 10 million copies, was one of the most post-launch supported games of all time, constant online population, and was used for competition for several years.

I would argue that the sales of the game were based on the hype built from the 6 years of waiting for a new GT game. Perhaps it was still popular amongst the Sony faithful, but I know that in my experience, everyone I have ever known to be a multi-console owner was extremely disappointed in the game. Ridiculously stupid AI, no car damage on 90% of the vehicles, poor textures, and incredibly long loading times were enough to push even the most hardcore GT fans I know to Forza 3 and 4, and they've never looked back.

The shooty parts were so good though!

I have no idea why there wasn't online multiplayer for the shooter gameplay, which was excellent. Plus the vehicle traversal wasn't fully realized despite being fun sometimes. If they just focused on the FPS part of the game and didn't have it end in an ambiguous and weird way it would have been quite the gem.

Now? Just a forgotten gem plagued in what could have been.

Yup, it's a rough diamond for sure, but a diamond nonetheless. A pity, nay? I loved how weighty the shooting felt. It never felt like bullets tore through enemies, but in a good way.

Brink can die for all I care, though~

This game was getting several magazine covers, and I was completely into the hype. It seemed like such a great idea for a game, then it turned out to not really be what anyone expected.... and then the studio made Evil Genius and closed down. :(

I remember a TV show on BBC2 or Channel 4 hyping it and the AI.

Ah, Republic. Was really hyped for it, bought it day 1, and then never really understood it. Still have the box and the discs for it.

Not day one, but exactly the same situation here. Maybe I'll see about playing it again soon.

it was also the Mario 64 Killer on playstation (Bubsy 3D)

There were a lot of games on the PSX that had that "Mario killer" tag. The one that springs to mind the most for me is Rascal:

Rascal_Coverart.png

What a piece of crap that game was. Janky early 3D gaming at its worst.

Oh man this was supposed to be huge

Wasnt the guy behind it some math genius?

It stuck in the worldwide charts right up until GT6 released, which is pretty impressive and consistent.

Just take a look at GT planet to see how many people played it until the servers were shut down to make way for GT6. The GT Community dwarfs the competition by a landslide.

It's probably the most polar oposite of a "forgotten about" game.

The animation in Rage is something I hoped more games would take note of, it was great and it's sad that barely anything I've played matched up to it since.

Can´t put in almost every game here ?

I don´t see people taking for once hyped games anymore even if they are good?

Just for an exampe: Are you talking about Uncharted 2/3 today? It was good, many people played it and thats just it.

MDK was going to be the next big thing from Shiny after the success of Earthworm Jim and Aladdin. See the concept trailer here.

Shiny just seemed to lose traction after the 16-bit era though. After MDK they released Messiah which is even more forgotten. It's a shame, really. MDK was an awesome game with a unique feel.

It did have a sequel, and the first game just had an HD version released somewhat recently.
