One month from today: BioShock Infinite

Boom

BioShock-Infinite.jpg

Finishing up my re-playthrough of the System Shock games, and then moving on to replaying BioShock 1 and 2.

God damn it, I love these games.

Looks incredible. I want to live there.
(I think)

Also, reminds me of Disneyland's Main St, but on steroids.

Levine in GB's new article

"I went to Disney World when I was maybe ten," he said. "It made a huge impression on me, perhaps in ways that I didn't even understand at the time. Like if you look at Disney World in general, as a concept...you've been on the Pirates of the Caribbean or the Haunted Mansion, they are really the early predecessors of the BioShocks and the Half-Lifes of the world. They're pseudonarrative experiences where you don't know where the audience's attention is going to be, or be focused on. So everybody in the audience in the Haunted Mansion, as old and crude as it is in some ways, it's aesthetically beautiful still, and there's so much detail going on that there's no way you're going to see it all in one visit. And you're looking this way, and your friend's looking that way, and that's what to make makes it a sort of proto-game in a way. That's one that had a really profound experience on me.

"Then you think about how they built things. You know, Main Street USA, it's wonderful, and it feels authentic, but it's a giant fake in every way. It's built to three-quarter scale, it's not normal sized, the buildings are smaller, the doors are smaller, because it wants to empower kids to feel larger. It's a sort of monoculture of architecture, in that it all matches, it's all built together at once. Whereas in real cities, you know, look out the window there's a whole hodgepodge out there. And that's what's sort of similar about Rapture and Columbia, they can be monocultures of architecture, and they're all built at the same time by a single driving force, whether it's Andrew Ryan or Comstock. With Main Street, I think Disney was trying to build something that reflected his memory of his youth, and probably an idealized memory of his youth. I think that Columbia is, in some ways, a reflection of a time that people think existed in their heads, but never really did. There was never a town square as idyllic as that, with the parades breaking out all the time. But we really wanted that feeling, we really wanted to create that shiny apple, and you sense the worm crawling underneath. To get that, the apple had to be very shiny."

I really do hope this game ends up being related to the original somehow. I have a feeling that if both games are connected, it will have to do with multiple dimensions.

Amazing. Makes sense.

Disney's Main St. takes place on the 4th of July [/Disney trivia], I see they picked up on that as well.

It's a really, really great article. I love hearing what he has to say. His approach to the medium and creative process is very cerebral and relatable to me.

I'm with him on this one. My distaste for Bio2 isn't exactly a secret but I've happily admitted that I found it did a few things right (or more accurately, better), one of those being, as close a call as it is, the soundtrack.

Me, too. Beyond "The Ocean on his Shoulders" (even that made a fitting appearance in BS2) and "All Spliced Up", Garry Schyman's BioShock 2 score is my choice out of the two, easily.

I might as well be the Tricky for Infinite. Maybe even greater. Im going to be framing the lithographs I get.

I bought an old blunderbuss too.

I'll put up pics as soon as I can.

If I knew how to really make an OT I totally would've been on it.

I preordered this game with a tsilon code but am flirting with the idea of cancelling it now, especially since Tomb Raider will be taking up my time for the next couple of weeks. I really enjoyed both Bioshock games but am not very excited about this game despite how interesting it looks. On the other hand this game has had a long development time with a massive budget in realizing its vision, which makes me want to support Irrational and Kevin Levine's efforts.

you should watch the gametrailers review of TR.. I'm totally not a review person either.... but I was curious and watched it, and that game is a 20 spot at best....I like TR games too, but when game-play destroys any chance for a decent story...I'm sure a good story in a TR game isn't your biggest concern but still....

Thread delivers.

The vibe in here fucking rocks.

lol I should forget about this game lol still got waay to long to wait...
amazing
not sure if posted anywhere on gaf of this thread... I was very pleased... I skipped Bioshock 2 because of no controller support... that and because Ken didn't direct it
Controls

One of the big differences between PC and console gaming is the availability of a mouse and keyboard. You expect it, so we’re happy to confirm that the PC options screens let you remap all the default action bindings, with both primary and alternate bindings available simultaneously. Speaking of mice, we’ve made sure not to alter the sensitivity of high-end gaming mice by applying artificial mouse smoothing, and you can control sensitivity or toggle mouse acceleration in the options screen.

What’s that you’re mumbling to yourself? You prefer a console controller? Don’t worry, traitor, your secret is safe with us. There are three separate controller layouts (Default, Marksman, and Retro), each of which support loads of configuration options. You can tweak aim assist, sensitivity, vibration, and look inversion. Are you a left-handed player? Go ahead and revel in your genetic superiority because all controller layouts support multiple analog-stick configurations: Default (Look on right stick, Move on left), Southpaw (opposite of Default), Legacy (for those GoldenEye fans), and Legacy Southpaw. And for those who truly yearn for an old-school feel, or who use special controllers for medical reasons, we even let you swap the left or right analog stick with the D-pad.

All UI’s in the game are controllable via either keyboard and mouse or the console controller, and you can switch back and forth between the two input paradigms without ever pausing the game.

Graphics

I know, I know. Why discuss Controls first when we all know that Graphics Options is the first place you’ll be visiting? Because patience is a virtue. And it’s worth the wait.

This time around, we’ve fully embraced widescreen gaming. With our implementation of “horizontal plus” widescreen support, the wider you go, the more you’ll see of Columbia’s gorgeous vistas. And for the true aficionado, we support multi-monitor gaming with AMD Eyefinity, NVIDIA Surround, and Matrox TripleHead2Go. You’ll also have separate controls for aspect ratio, resolution, and display mode (fullscreen, windowed, and fullscreen windowed).

We have six different graphics presets, from “Very Low” to “Ultra,” providing a wide range of quality-versus-performance options. Gamers who want to tweak those further can switch to a Custom configuration, which gives you control over anti-aliasing, texture detail, texture filtering, dynamic shadows, post-processing, light shafts, ambient occlusion, and object level of detail. Many of these options have setting levels that are only available under DX11.

That’s right—BioShock Infinite is a DX11 game. Though you only need DX10-compatible hardware to play, having a DX11 graphics card gives you access to contact-hardening dynamic shadows, diffusion depth of field, high definition ambient occlusion and optimized antialiasing. Each of these features was developed in close collaboration with AMD’s graphics experts to take maximum advantage of modern DX11 hardware.

Finally, to show off all of that glorious PC pixel-pushing power, we’re shipping with unadulterated, full-resolution textures right in the box. You may not enjoy the three-DVD install, but we hope you will appreciate the jaw-dropping detail our amazing team of artists lavished on the game.

Gaming Wherever, Whenever

So you have a sweet gaming rig at home, but what about when you’re on the road for work, taking a break between classes, or visiting your relatives? We know that you appreciate being able to bring your gaming with you and may not always have a beefy machine available. We’ve worked hard to include graphics options that scale both up and down, so you can play BioShock Infinite even on less powerful setups with integrated graphics.

Speaking of bringing your gaming with you, did I mention that the game is on Steam, with Steam Cloud support? You’ll be able to get your BioShock Infinite fix no matter where you are, and your saved progress travels with you.

Likewise, if you just bought an 80-inch TV and prefer to take your PC gaming to the couch (or is it a “love seat”?), we’ve got you covered with support for Steam’s Big Picture mode. Heck, with a wireless controller and a good insurance plan, you can even play from your Jacuzzi.

Conclusion

If I have any regrets, it’s that there are always more features that we wanted to add than we had time to implement. For example, some of the most requested PC features these days are in-game V-Sync and FOV adjustment controls. Unfortunately, given our tight sc—wait, never mind. We added those too!
announced a while ago but new news is new. :p

The more recent footage coming from what I gather to be the opening sections of the game really sold me on a preorder. Not going to spoil anything, but theres a ton of detail and atmosphere here that looks great. I know Bioshock Infinite will likely be in the winter steam sales for a fraction of the price, or even half price in the summer sales, but I'm voting with my wallet here. I want to see more experiences like this.

The friendly AI video was a great look at a certain moment in the game, but enemy AI is a bit strange from what I've seen. On one hand, there seems to be a ton of unique animations and attacks depending on what the player is doing and where the player is - and there appears to be a lot of variety in attack patterns of each enemy type. However, the gunplay itself is fairly basic - probably because a complicated attack pattern + precise gunplay leads to disaster to all but the most skilled players. For those of us wanting to stop an enemy in its tracks with a precise blow rather than rounds of bullets, this might come as a drag.

Though, that might be because every video we've seen involves an assault rifle and god mode.

Only one way to be sure. Experience it.

My blood is boiling in anticipation.

Dude, Ingue, if i did, you really think I would tell you guys? Come on.

I didn't say anything because I know Wasp is a smart guy and would never make a mistake like that.

sweet post neo. good shit.

Thanks. After reading some more about it and checking out more gameplay vids I've decided to keep it. The added bonus of having the first Bioshock with the PS3 version is also a nice touch. I feel like the years of effort put into this game deserve to be supported.

Does anyone know what the artwork for the reversible cover will be?

Bought on PC. Body = Ready.

The game is coming out on my 20th birthday, I just had to do it even though I'm low on monies.

I'm also low on cash but there's no way I'm not rewarding these guys for making this game. This is the kind of experience I want from my games, I would really regret it if I didn't support this from day 1.

PSA: The second reward tier on Steam has reached 52% of the "goal". This of course means that the overall bar has crossed the halfway point after just one week, with there being a further ~3.5 weeks until release.

Quick question: I'm on a pretty heavy media blackout for this game but I heard that there's a new combat video out. Does it look more polished than the VGA footage?

I did just place my preorder. I am figuring this is going to run really poorly on PS3. It's UE3, right?

Well Irrational basically took UE3 and modified it. Gutted it. Added their own things to it. The lighting engine is brand spanking new though.

I have no worries about the PS3 version.

And yeah Robo, new vid is outstanding. It's the 40 minute interview on GameSpot.
