One month from today: BioShock Infinite

I don't know how to explain but can anyone tell me if we can see the left hand of booker ? Like in Bioshock 1 where you could switch between plasmids and weapons. Seems to me like they put that feature out. You can shoot a vigor and thats it.

Idk about you guys but i think thats lame. I want to see the effects of the vigors.

Looks like the left hand to me.

Pre-ordered the game through Amazon. Will never do that again.

100 dollars just for sending the fucking game. What a scam, for God's sake. It's actually more expensive than the freaking game.

Ugh reminds me of... what's it called... murder of crows? and his hand gets talons and some feathers I think. Made me feel uneasy. :p

It's unbelievable how bad BioShock gets when you reach Hephaestus. The splicers are just bullet sponges, Big Daddies reduce you to critical health in one hit and force health pack spamming, and it only gets worse from there.

This a joke right? The game is a fucking cakewalk by that point (even on Hard), unless you are purposely not upgrading plasmids, health or EVE and not seeking out Power to the People stations. And Sploicers are only bullet sponges if you arent using the correct ammo on them (which is learned by researching with the camera). Even then, you can just beat the shit out of all of them with the wrench.

I agree the last 1/4 of the game is the weakest, but it is by no means bad.

I think the quality dropped after Hephaestus. However, unlike a lot of people, I still like the last third of Bioshock. Sure, it's weaker than the rest of the game, but it is far from bad.

IMO Bioshock 1's quality goes down considerably after the massive plot twist takes place. Both the story and the design take a nosedive, so here's hoping Levine was true to his word in making sure it doesn't happen again in Infinite (assuming there's a twist of course).

BioShock 2 has a much stronger back half for me. Not that Bio 1 is ever hard, actually it's mad easy, but there were just a few design decisions that rubbed me the wrong way, and the environments aren't very interesting at that point either. The fetch quests weren't great too.

I found Bioshock 2 considerably more difficult, but not so much where it gave me problems. The Big Sisters can be a real pain in the ass.
Yeah, I'm not sure I ever got it down really, with Big Daddies, I'd just fire off as many proximity mines as I could at their feet, and they'd die without ever getting near, but the Big Sisters were always more of a challenge, they're so much more mobile I think is the real issue.

I've played BioShock numerous times and this part never fails to be bad. Shotgun goes from instant kill at close range to barely making a dent. You can't compensate with alternate ammo because explosive buck sucks and there's no anti-personnel for shotgun. Enemies run around on fire for 30 seconds straight still shooting at you the whole time. And you don't need a camera to find their weakness because it's self-explanatory. Anti-personnel for splicers, armor-piercing for anything else. And you can beat them with the wrench. That's the entire problem. The wrench becomes the best weapon by a mile because the damage resistance splicers gain is enormous. There's no curve, it's just a sudden wall saying "No standard ammunition beyond this point." Never helped that the enemies literally do not react physically to being shot until they're dead.

Yeah super fast and they really like to get in your face and pummell the crap out of you. I always used the freeze on them and then the shotty or chaingun. Even then, they would take awhile to put down. The freeze to drill method works well too.

A few proximity mines and a couple well placed rockets always seemed to work as well

I looooved the Little Sister segment. You know the one. So creative and insightful into the game universe.

Just go Drill Master baby and fuck all the weapons, and the game is so easy you could probably close your eyes and win :P

Anyway, I got a new copy of Bioshock 2 and plan on trying Minerva's Den shortly. Wish me fun!

I wonder how the game will end. Maybe everyone gets sent to the future.

With the premise, this game can literally end in any way. I really have no idea. I just hope it has a twist and it's great.

I recently replayed 2 so I remember 1 a bit less clear but I remember the games being brutally hard at the start and just getting easier and easier as you go on. They do have new splicers show up but the enemies (even the big sisters in 2) stay the same and you just keep getting stronger. 2 especially because of the research. By the end I was just super freezinf and one shot killing most enemies and wasting the Bigs

When is everyone going complete internet blackout for this game?

I was thinking about going dark next week exactly, I'm sure I can manage without the internet for a week if it means I do not get spoiled.

Bioshock is one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm hoping Infinite surpasses it. I'm just happy that I've went on media blackout with Infinite. I'll probably stay away from the gaming forum to avoid any spoilery thread titles.

I have a feeling it will. Just in terms of gameplay, all else being equal, there are already elements that seem to make Infinite's take on combat a little deeper and more fluid

I don't really care about story in games because they're always so bad, but I do care about the atmosphere and the feel of a game's universe; Bioshock's world was one of the most brilliantly realized and unique locations in any medium, period. From the little I've allowed myself to be spoiled on for Columbia, it's an astonishing city... with a great sense of place and scale (buildings moving up and down subtly on their platforms; you can see areas you'll visit later from different vantage points, so it seems continuous). So I think this will at least equal what we got in Bioshock.

Everything else, who is to say...

That's a bit extreme, I don't think you'll get it spoiled on Neogaf, not unless someone accounts suicides.

Possibly, maybe I will still look at Neogaf but other parts of the internet (youtube etc) are a no go for me.

Ah well for youtube, just immediately go into fullscreen lol. But really avoid places like Gamefqs.. I remember getting MGS4 spoiled for me when I was hyped up for it. Doesn't help that they tend to use thread title to spoil shit.

I'm in the same boat. I think a great atmosphere and great story go hand in hand--and that's what made Bioshock 1 so great. Games like this don't need hour long cutscenes as the story can simply be told through the world itself. I'm hoping there are plenty of side stories akin to Bioshock 1 (audio tapes, etc...), I always loved those.

Just install the YouTube no-comments add-on for Chrome. YouTube comments are pretty vile anyways, there's no point in ever reading those. and they're definitely not worth getting spoiled over.

I think the most interesting thing about Infinite, is I feel like I know nothing at all about it. I've tried to avoid videos, so that could be part of it, but in terms of the moment to moment design of this game, I know nothing. I don't know if it all takes place outside, I don't know if the outside is just a level hub for levels in buildings, I don't know if it's open world, I don't know if whole levels take place in tears. I don't know anything. That's a pretty rare feeling to get from games. I haven't played anything beyond that early demo of GoW:A, and I already feel like I know exactly what that game will be, the same for almost everything that comes out.

Shotgun goes from instant kill at close range to barely making a dent.

This is malarkey unless you never upgraded it. The shotgun, especially with Electric or Explosive Bucks and fully upgraded, wrecks house and can knock anyone on their ass in a couple shots regardless of difficulty

You can't compensate with alternate ammo because explosive buck sucks

It's actually one of the most powerful alt ammos in the game, but okay.

Enemies run around on fire for 30 seconds straight still shooting at you the whole time.

So you set dudes on fire, and don't finish them off? You let them run around and be assholes?

And you don't need a camera to find their weakness because it's self-explanatory.

Actually if you take enough pictures, the Splicers become more susceptible to damage and thus become weaker

The wrench becomes the best weapon by a mile because the damage resistance splicers gain is enormous.

The Splicers never gain damage resistance. They might be resistant to certain ammo types, but their specific weakness is told to you by the first time you get a great photo of them

You played it numerous times my ass =P

I remember Kotaku had a screenshot of the end game cameo in MGS4 like month before release. Dicks.

Really quite pumped for this; out of nowhere, too. BS1 was probably my most anticipated release ever and it didn't disappoint (probably couldn't have considering my hype levels), but Infinite kinda looked like it was going off the rails a bit, so I didn't follow it too much.

I hope there's a decent amount of AI exploitation/manipulation, but it doesn't look like it'd fit the narrative as much as it did BS1.

I mean, scouring an entire level for gas canisters/barrels, painstakingly holding that left trigger and telekinesis-in' them back to a Little Sister hole; waiting for that poor Daddy to bring her back, totally oblivious to the fact that there's a proximity mine buried beneath, ready to deliver that one-hit kill payload... Sogoodman.

I see what you did thar

Yeah I've tried to go on a black out to a degree, but I did see some things I'd probably have been greatly surprised about had I not seen them. One of them in particular still excites me since I want to know the context.

But for the most part, I tried to avoid sitting through entire trailers or reading previews in depth. Just skim and skip through for basic glimpses, where possible.

I agree with you, insomuch is I think it's a fair assessment to say that atmosphere and story can go hand in hand. And like you, I feel the hands-off approach of storytelling is best... highly interpretive, no cutscenes but story moments you can move around and act during (maybe even changing the outcome of the event itself), and narrative being told through the world itself (Metroid Prime is a great example of this).

So as far as my ability to appreciate game stories goes (and it doesn't go very far, sadly, considering the dire state of most game stories), I think Bioshock has the right idea. It's basically as intrusive as you want it to be (collect audio diaries or don't; explore the world, however limited that exploration may be, or don't).

I actually expect Columbia to be even more explorable than BS 1/2, given the openness of the city, but we'll know shortly <:)
