One month from today: BioShock Infinite

Nice man. I wish I lived up there to check out all the advertisements, but fuck cold weather.

Yeah it was really windy today like I said I never really go to Manhattan but this was in Upper West side Harlem parents had to go somewhere there and decided to go along and saw a few of these on the way.

Im really gonna have to start putting together a gaming PC soon...

I havent been a PC gamer since the 90s =/
I feel the same way, but I just don't have the money right now. I graduated in August with my MBA, but I was lacking in experience. I'm working a job right now that doesn't pay me that well so I can build up experience that will lead towards a job more reflecting of someone who has attained an MBA. In the meantime... I've got loans and such to pay. :/
it's a good feel, Andrew. I went half of this gen without a gaming level PC and built myself one with help from neoGAF, and I haven't looked back. Once you build one, you start to get comfortable buying parts and gradually upgrading a PC to stay up-to-date, and that is far more convenient and cheap over the long haul
I'm excited for this, eventually.
May as well wait another year or two for the hardware to fly ahead of the next consoles so you don't have to upgrade for the next 4-5 years unless you need to be at the highest of high ends every year.

Probably wouldn't take much to get this game running on all high settings at 1080p (no dx11 stuff probably). Hell I expect to be able to do it with my meager 470 and 3ghz quad core. This is a Unreal engine game right? Those always run really easy and smooth on PC.
This is when I'm probably going to be able to upgrade, which pleases me.

Do Irrational, or 2K for that matter, own the rights to System Shock anymore?

I remember hearing a while ago that EA owned the rights, and then some other smaller firm came along and bought them so that SS2 could be re-released on GOG?

They don't, unfortunately.

The rights are split between EA and an investment company. EA having the distribution rights, and the investment company having the development rights. So it's in limbo. I mean, that company has hung upon those rights for more than 10 years! I can't believe EA hasn't purchased the rights so far (not saying they should, because that could be terrible).

With Bioshock being an Xbox exclusive originally and promoting this game as being best on PC (i.e. Microsoft Windows) I hope this game will work well on PS3.

2K, if you can hear me, please release a free benchmark download so I can determine whether I should go with PC or PS3. I have an nVidia GeForce GTX 560M(2GB) with 8GB RAM and 64-bit Windows 7. Not sure if the card is up to snuff, though -- it's above "Minimum" but below "Recommended" on Can You Run It.

THIS.

I have a laptop with:
- GeForce GT 540M (2 GB)
- Core i7 2617M (dual core up 2.6ghz)
- 8GB DDR3 RAM
- Windows 7 home premium 64-bit

I meet the minimum requirements, but should I just pick up the Xbox version?

Yeah. If System Shock 3 was ever going to be made, it probably would have been already and would have been what came instead of Bioshock.

Do remember that Irrational (2K Boston at the time BioShock released) never had anything to do with the PS3 version of Bioshock 1. The fact that this is coming out at the same time, and that it's on a new version of the Unreal Engine (UE3 that is) will surely mean similar 360 and PS3 versions.

Hopefully.

Did you just get out of your Delorian from 2007?

I have the exact same specs you have, assuming you have an i7, and I'm getting it for PC. You'll probably get around 60 fps at 1280x720, with no high-res textures and no AA, and around 30 fps at 1920x1080 at the same settings.

The disparity between 360 and PS3 cross-platform releases was down to the fact that from a programming standpoint the 360 is essentially a PC in a console shell (a very OUTDATED PC,) while the Playstation has always been this weird piece of alien technology that Sony designs from the ground up every generation. Software engineers can write code for 360 in their sleep, but they practically have to start over from scratch every time a new Playstation comes out. This far into the generation, they pretty much have it licked. It's become pretty rare to have a PS3 version that's significantly different from than the 360 version. Last one I recall was Bayonetta, and supposedly that was down to sloppy 3rd party porting. I'm not worried about the PS3 version.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "360" version shown in vids is the PC version with 360 UI icons.

I'll be using a 1600x900 monitor (17-inch screen), so I guess based on your estimates I could maybe hover around 35-45 fps with some AA, mm? I suspect that would still outperform the PS3 version.

PS3 Bioshock port had problems like framerate issues, the blurry vaseline filter it had going on reminiscent of GTA4 PS3, and white lines appearing on the edges of screens during cutscenes.

2k did not get my money that day.

I hope the x360/ps3 parity of Infinite is similar to the excellent Dead Space 3.
The post-release patch really cleaned up PS3 BioShock. Fixed the pixelated textures on the Big Daddies and dramatically sharpened overall image quality compared to how it was prior. I played through it twice on PS3, once the old way, and again after the patch -- it was fun simply revisiting areas on bookmarked saves and seeing the difference. It's quite nice now, the main quirk being how it still chugs a little in places (I.E. briefly when the whale appears in the descent to Rapture, when Big Daddies are walking around in close quarters in Fort Frolic, etc).

The console versions will be sub 720p, medium quality and around 30 fps, you shouldn't even be considering the PS3 version.

Not going to be a big difference either way.

Bioshock is probably the worst PS3 port after Bayonetta. Bioshock 2 was decent though (I know it was a different dev) and this one should be on par which is pretty much the norm now anyway.

Man I must be the only one that loves the PS3 port (and I started off playing the 360 version many times) and I had zero issues with it every time Ive played it. If theres any difference in presentation or performance I sure as hell cant notice it.

That was at the start of the console generation though, so not many developers would have had that much experience with the PS3. The PS3 version of Infinite will be fine, I don't think someone like Ken Levine would be happy shipping a game which doesn't function properly.

I recently played through Bioshock 1 on PS3 and apart from the first level and some parts of the last level the game ran absolutely flawless. Sure it probably didn't have the same image quality as the 360 version to start with but after the texture patch it was definitely atleast on par with the 360 version.

Bioshock 1 PS3 was developed by 2K Marin (along with Digital Extremes), who later went on to develop all three versions of Bioshock 2.

Like someone already mentioned, they patched Bioshock 1 PS3 ages ago and fixed it up completely. Virtually identical to the 360 version. Actually I did notice one big difference... unlocking the framerate causes no screen tearing. At least, not on my Bravia. Whereas the 360 version unlocked was almost unplayable.

Im really hoping the differences in the console versions will be slim to nil, much like the Dead Space series. Each one of those, no matter what the system, was basically identical to one another.

Guess I'll go with 360 so I won't be hunched over my 1366x768 screen. Thanks for the reply!

My Infinite will be on PS3. Ill just give the code to download Bio 1 to whoever wants it.

I don't think it's gonna work with code.

I've had two games that have complete games in them, and they don't use codes.

Medal of Honor: Limited Edition had MoH: Frontlines and Assassin's Creed Revelations had AC1. If you wanted to play the extra game, you had to install it on the HDD and have the game's disk in at all times.

Guess you're stuck with a fourth copy! Unless 2K was kind enough to just put it as a code, which would be better.

I read somewhere it was going to be a code given to you so you can just download it off PSN. I might be wrong though. And I dont have three copies on me lol, Im just on my third. The first was lent to someone and then I moved and never saw it again and the second was stolen from me.

You're a lucky man... it was a port holocaust!

Sounds like it. I bet it was a shitstorm up in here.

So, do you go around upgrading people's PCs for free or something? When can you be here? I'm waiting.
He was talking to me, and I have a gaming PC that can run most games at max or near-max settings. With this game, on a System Labs check, my video card is above minimum but below recommended. Otherwise, all systems a-go. And really, he's right -- I should just go with the PC version. By virtue of 8GB RAM, i7 and a more modern card, it will outperform the PS3. It might be "medium" by PC standards, but still above consoles. So yeah, I guess I'll stop over-thinking this and just preorder the PC version. It'd be nice if we end up getting XCOM out of the deal since I really wanted that game, too.

Gamestop.com has limited qualities of the Ultimate Songbird edition instock. Tempted but $80 for a statue is steep, and that's weird for me to say given I have Jack's chainlink wrists tattoos lol.

Ah, my bad.

I wish I could find a screenshot so you can see it: When the demo of the PS3 version came out, it seemed kinda OK... but then towards the end of it there's that dead Big Daddy sitting in the water. For some reason, his texture map was completely wonky, like the pixels were ten times their normal size. Everyone said "Eh, it's just a demo, they'll fix it." Sure enough, it was like that in the full game too.

Someday you should try deleting your Bioshock 1 game data and take your PS3 offline so it can't download the patch and play the original version. Definitely have a couple of drinks first. ;)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.
I don't remember exactly what the patch fixed but out of the box it was a terrible port, those were bad times for the PS3, glad sony learned their lesson.

I played it on PC but I was really appaled with what I saw on DF's analysis.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-vs-ps3-face-off-round-15-article?page=2

Textures on certain Big Daddy variants look pretty poor (this actually extends to some of the splicers too) and the game's cut-scenes now appear to sport a thin white border around the edge of the screen.

a drop from 720p to 680p, and secondly by the inclusion of an utterly useless, detail-destroying blur effect that kills fine detail. Yup, the dreaded Vaseline effect is back, once again lowering picture quality for PS3 owners with absolutely zero benefit whatsoever.

the PS3 version was far more prone to dropping down to 20fps at any given moment, even on the undersea voyage intro sequence, whereas the 360 game does a pretty good job of staying at the requisite 30 frames per second.

shows a basic lack of respect to the PlayStation 3 and its userbase.

The patch fixed the stuff in the first paragraph but I think that was it. Not only was it sub-hd but alpha textures were really low res which in a game with water everywhere has a huge impact on the overall visual quality.
Thank god those days are over.

Well I would've been livid too had I seen something like that in the full game, especially after playing the 360 version so many times.

Bastard stole my next tattoo idea..

Its really common now after a Kotaku writer shared his a couple years ago. I think its a fantastic idea, simple, clean and doesn't scream "VIDEO GAME TATTOO". The only downside being that wrist tattoos, much like ankle tattoos, require touch-ups given the skin cells there

2&3 were identical but 1 had a significantly lower frame-rate on PS3, it's also in the article I posted above.
Talk about a rough start for a console lol.

Who knows, Infinite might actually be better on PS3, has happened a few times lately, Prototype 2, Portal 2, Brink...

Found the infamous big daddy pic:

Regarding the False Shepherd trailer:

So THAT'S what happens to Booker's right hand that necessitates the bandage!

Yeah I saw that too.
I wonder if he means to stab him right where that scar is? LIke maybe to fuck it up so no one will ever see what it is, regardless of it being bandaged. After healing, it would end up just being a nasty scar. No AD anymore.

Talk about a rough start for a console lol.

All I can say is that, like many games, I played Dead Space 1 on both PS3 and 360, and I would never ever say there was a "significantly lower frame rate." I don't doubt that the PS3 dipped to a lower frame rate at times, that's par for the course. But the difference was not glaring. And I'm someone who is often amazed at how many people seem to have difficulty in discerning even blatant frame drops.

Wow I thought I remembered hearing that the ps3 version of Bioshock was the best when it was released. Must of just been pr speak when it was releasing or something. Either that or I'm confusing it with with one of the other ports the ps3 got later like Oblivion.
