I was the victim of debit card scam. Not a big deal, really, they deposited 500 fake dollars into my account and withdrew 380 real dollars. I don't owe a cent. But it was a huge inconvenience to get my card cancelled and have to wait till the next business day to get a new card.

The woman said that these shams and scams are usually purpetrated at gas stations. Since I only go to the Sunoco for it's CAA benefits, I have to place the blame on their greasey staff.

I guess he swiped the card in a seperated reader when I wasn't looking. Still annoying the lengths some will go to for free money.

Annoying more than anything.

I'm going to start carrying more cash around.

As I rule, I try not to ever use my debit/credit cards unless I'm the one doing the swiping, and I can see the machine in question looks legit.

I guess it's easier for the trash to get "on the inside" when they want to rob a gas station. Takes out the middle man and they can get right into your pocket.

I had a "dream" gas station experience once at a Petro Canada. A few years back I went to get gas, and the machine I went up to was all screwy. The price kept changing from like 0.03 cents then up to like $5/litre than back down again. It was an auto-payment thing. So anyway I fill up the tank, and when I finish and the thing finally gets charged it came out to something like 30 cents for the entire tank! The machine was totally fucked up and I got a great deal :)

Of course, had it been something crazy like $300 I would have immediately gone into the station and complained that the machine wasn't working. Considering my luck, I got into my car and drove off.

It's usually a bad idea to use your debit card for anything other than getting cash out of a machine. Most debit cards don't afford you the protection that a standard credit card does, and they don't have a "limit" other than all the money in your bank account.

There's two things these people need to get to your money: the electronic information stored on the magnetic srip of your your debit card (which they can copy with specialized hardware) and your PIN number. If they have only one, you're ok so what you have to do is:

1. keep your debit card on your sight at all times. If they have to swipe the card again for any reason they should be giving you a transaction cancelled slip.

2. don't give out your PIN number. If you do you will be held liable. Also, be careful that someone might see you enter your PIN info behind you at ATMs. Some scammers have gone as far as placing cameras to catch people entering their PIN's.

With people using online banking (most of us) don't have your computer save your online banking passwords. That's just stupid.

You can call your back (at least here in the states) and request a limit on it. Wachovia has a $500 cash limit on my card when I opened the account. Since there is rarely that much money in it, I didn't bother removing the restriction :)
