Download it here!

For those who haven't used Opera, it's one of the fastest, most feature intensive browsers out there, and, thankfully, the UI is much, much improved (though Safari has spoiled me with its RSS integration). Just wanted to throw a head's up in its favor for anyone interested.

Internet Explorer and a garbage dump.

in all seriousness though, Opera and the latest 1.5FF betas have no discernable speed differences. FF does have the benefit of having third-party 'optimized' builds tailored to a bunch of processors which could suit you just fine.

Firefox - Opera offers nothing that can't be matched in Firefox, while Firefox offers features that are either non-existent in Opera or require a third-party program.

Opera does make a snazzy second or third browser depending on your preferences though.

They've given up and realized noone wants to pay for a browser.

Almost. They found other people who will pay for one - mobile phone carriers and suppliers. They are a larger and much more tangible market.

Opera, if you don't want to fuck around downloading plugins and shit.

It really is the most complete out of the box browser there is.

You need IE still, because some webcompanies are fucking retarded and can't manage to create compatibility between proper standards and IE.

Firefox for me, but Opera comes close. Opera's got better functionality out of the box, is a tad faster at page rendering, and is more compliant with web standards. Firefox has extensions which make it the king of browser functionality, though too many can cause it to be slow and unstable.

Download and install both.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?!?! Thank you so much Opera team!

OPERA. Firefox as an alternative for a couple of very useful plugins. Firefox as an application is even slower than Internet Explorer. Plus its scrolling even with a plugin is an absolute nightmare.

Ahhh, I just installed it and scrolling is definitely nicer with Opera. And I can start scrolling the page without having to wait for things to load!

Now, how the HELL do I get a "home" button next to the other navigation buttons? The interface for doing that makes little sense to me. HELP!

Right click on the toolbar select "customize". Go to "buttons" tab -> Browser, find it and drag and drop it wherever you want. The interface customization options in Opera are countless. You can put anything wherever you want.

Thank you very much. I was dropping them into the other sections within the customizations window.

Edit, one more question: Can I move the page bar so it goes below the button/address bar somehow?

I'd love Opera if it wasn't such a damn resource hog.

Try a new version, it was probably an "100% CPU load" Opera bug with the version you tried. Opera was NEVER a resource hog except the first version of Opera7 a year ago. Actually it's one of the fastest apps on my computer if not the fastest.

Now I have a question. How do you get rid of that annoying drop down bar when you select the address in the address bar.

the last build of opera doesn't like to search google for me at all. Every time I search, the page stops loading before half of the page is displayed. It's very annoying. Maybe I need another build.

Drop down bar? I have customized Opera months ago and saved my customization so I can't remember it, but since I don't have it, it can be removed. Usually most things go away if you right click on them and select "remove from toolbar".

Click the address bar to make the annoying popup appear, right click it and in customize, with the annoying box highlighted choose "off".

P.S. Sorry about the double post.

Scrolling with Firefox is slow?

News to me.

Firefox is much faster than IE for me, but it misses pop-pops that the latest IE build usually gets. It also wouldn't accept the flash plug-ins for a while. Thanks for the info, I'll give Opera a try.

I've actually been using Opera for a couple of weeks now and I love it. If anyone does download it make sure you look up OperaTools on the web. It's a slight tweak to the system to block ads. It also as a feature that lets you choose how you want your browser to be identified as (for all those damn IE only websites). Really good browser, I love it.

The only thing it is missing is the weather forcast (forcast fox).

Been using it for a couple of hours, and I really like it so far. Its sort of just stopped a few times, but other than that a tad bit more efficient that firefox from what I can tell so far.

This feature is in the standard Opera distribution under Tools->Quick Preferences->Identify As. Just FYI.

you would have a valid point if this was a news site, or if the initial post linked to a news site, or if you weren't a newbie junior. tell your mom i said hi.

I've read that Opera's email is superior to thunderbird so I might use it in that sense.
But, I can't see a reason to switch from Firefox to Opera.

Unless Opera gets a FlashGot program, Gmail Notifier, Foxy Tunes, and allows for speedhacks I'll stick with Firefox.

Can opera's mail program be downloaded seperately?

I've been using Opera for some time. great browser.

One thing I can't figure out at the moment is how to move the "X" Buttons from the tab lineup to the far right of the URL input. It used to be there, now it's on each tab. Any way of moving it back?

quick quesiton: does opera retain all of your bookmarks and settings if you uninstall before upgrading? I've got 8.02 right now and downloaded 8.5, but I'm not sure if they recommend getting rid of the older version first (which was the case with Firefox).

Tools > Preferences > General > Uncheck "Show close button on each tab"

I would just upgrade directly; I had no problems doing so and it retained all my settings. Unless you really feel the need to uninstall first, in which case I would back up the settings as necessary. I'd offer to help you there but I'm using a Mac and the file structure is radically different if you're on a PC.

I've used Opera for six years now...basically since the Opera 3 days. The biggest advantage for me is the save state feature, where you can close the browser out, and open it hours or days later and the pages in all the windows (and up to the last five or ten in the cache) are saved in the exact same state you left them in. It's pretty good for forums, as you can tell exactly what time left it. Also great in case of a PC crash, as you go back to whatever you were looking at before without losing it and perhaps forgetting the address. I have Firefox open at the same time though, as sometimes Opera tends to hang on some pages (might be a cache thing there, I always let it get loaded). And I still need IE for the ymtnd sites, but otherwise that browser has been worthless for years.

I would actually move to firefox if they had mouse gestures.

speaking of mouse gestures, who's bright idea was it to make the "close page" gesture almost exactly the same as the "open new page" gesture? oh so frustrating. and then Opera had the balls to take the ability to open pages you've closed away with their 8.01 upgrade! (if it's still there please point me in the right direction)
