A masterwork to be sure. I've heard that Deliverance and Damnation are their two other best albums, so I'll be picking those up next. :)

I'm in the exact opposite situation as you. I have Deliverance and Damnation but I want Blackwater Park. I hear a new album is coming out this year too.

Blackwater Park and Still Life are both amazing..... they also have a live DVd out that kicks ass sorts of ass.

NEW ALBUM?!! YES!! I got into the band just in time. :)

Just got back from the store with Deliverance and Damnation. I'm going to smoke a blunt (well, probably just half of one) and listen to Blackwater, then Deliverance, then Damnation. Muahaha. :D

my ranking for opeth albums imo

1. Still Life
2. Blackwater Park
3. Morningrise
4. Orchid
5. My Arms, Your Hearse
6. Damnation
7. Deliverence

I think their best song is Twilight is my Robe off of thier first album Orchid. Damnation is a non-metal album they put out which is like a lot of thier 70's prog rock influences.

cant wait for their new album!!!!

what sucks is that the DVD does not have any songs on albums prior to Blackwater Park because of their old record labels would not allow the songs to be on the DVD. You really miss out on some good songs, notably Demon of the Fall which they always close the show with

After having listened to the 2 albums for a while, I've come to the conclusion that they're both very different from Blackwater Park, but both are equally great. Deliverance's reputation for being an album on the "hard extreme" of Opeth's range is unfounded. There were plenty of acoustic sections and plenty of clean vocals; this is not as brutal as Damnation is soft. Not nearly. But it did remind me of a typical death metal band much moreso than Blackwater Park did. The guitar work on Blackwater almost seems like it could be played by the string section of an orchestra with good results, whereas the riffage on Deliverance is more typical of what you'd expect from a metal band. The drumming on Deliverance is an improvement. Much more jazzy, not as in the background.

Damnation is truly the odd man out. This fits its reputation as Opeth's "soft extreme", but even so, it's not what I expected. None of the lighter passages of the previous two albums sound anything like this. It's brilliant.
