Opinions on Satallite Radio

I'm a big fan of radio broadcasting and I've been wondering about Satallite radio for some time now. The music stations I can imagine are great since there's so much variaty and everything is commercial free. As for the several stations of talk and sports. I'm wondering how good or well known could these hosts be working on Satallite. With the exception of Howard Stern next year.

I also don't know much about how much the service generally costs per year and I'm even more clueless as to how the systems themselves work. If I were to buy Satallite radio I'd want something portable that I can take anywhere I go. I don't generally listen to music or talk radio on a stereo without headphones. At home or anywhere I prefer portable audio devices. Do XM or Sirius make portable recievers?

If uou have Satallite Radio, what do you think of it?

I have Sirius personally. I love it. It was one of those random gifts that I was given from the family, (they say I am hard to shop for), that I was a bit apprehensive about, but I have absolutely fallen in love with it.

It's great for music, for news, and suprisingly entertainment. There is seriously a station out there for damn near every genre of music and the DJs seem to be good about not shoving a couple of tracks down your throat over and over. If you want that, they do have a generic 'Hits' station, but I only tune into that once in a while. (Of note, this station is one of the few that I have heard that is still censored. Everything else is completely untouched.)

Being a pretty big News/Talk radio fan I dig the fact that there are three flavors of NPR, and a nice broad spectrum of talk radio. And while I have not checked it out much myself, they have a few odd ball chanels like Comedy and Entertainment News and such. The comedy station was pretty useless a few months back but they seem to be really pushing it as of lately in the few commercials that I do hear.

Which is another good point. Except on those stations pumped in from other media, (ABC, NPR, alot of the talk radio stuff not exsclusive to Sirius), you do get commercials. They tend to fall in the range of your typical AM commericials so they can be pretty damn annoying. It's not all a lost cause since you can get turned on to some of the other channels that are out there because Sirius uses some of that time to pimp other chanels. But the stations that have commercials I would say are in the very small minority. The majority of stations, and more importantly all the music stations, are commercial free. Its great.

Plus the little reciever I got lets me store ten tracks into the memory of the unit and it'll constantly search out the incoming stream for those tracks. If I am listening to NPR, but that old Cake song comes on some other station it'll beep and let me switch to that station to catch the song. Great for songs you don't hear often, or songs that you catch the tail end of and kind of dig. I've found alot of good groups from that feature.

I will say though that only XM has a personal device that I have seen. Kind of a bummer, as I really do like Sirius, but if that is the main concern of yours, you are pretty much just looking at that one reciever and only XM. I've had a friend who has XM and they swear by it just as much as I swear by Sirius, so I don't think it would be too different. But if you are at all flexible in how you listen to it, check the exsclusives of each XM and Sirius. I don't know any of XM's but I know Sirius has the NFL for like 6 years or something. And I think next year it will also have an exsclusive on the NBA. Also Stern will be coming, which while not my bag should be pretty cool.

Sorry for rambaling on here, I just really like my little satallite radio. :)

I'm just glad you could make something out of that mess. I'll go back and edit it up later, but I can't think straight right now. Train of thought typing = Messy reading.

EDIT: Ok.. so I felt productive. Didn't add much, just fixed how it looked and things like that.

If it weren't such a tough decision, I would have satellite radio by now. I used to spend a lot of time listening to Sirius over the internet, and was kind of annoyed that a lot of stations still seem to run off a playlist/rotation type of mentality. I would hear the same Tori Amos song once or twice a day for quite some time.

XM Radio is cheaper and has been a big sponsor of Nip/Tuck (one of my favorite TV shows), so I lean towards them for other reasons. Plus I am very attracted to that XM-Walkman thing....

How hard is it for you guys to get a signal at your home or apartment? Do you have to install an outside antenna somehow?

Has anybody tried both? What exclusive content does one have over the other? I don't give a shit about Stern.....and who the hell listens to football on the radio?

And if I got anything I'd get Sirius. Maybe they'll come out with a portable device soon.

They are scheduled to drop their portable sometime next year IIRC. BTW you can't go wrong with either service I have XM and love it... basically you're gonna get a shitload of music channels with either service, and it'll come down to what else do you want to listen to. NFL, Stern? Sirius... MLB? College BBall? XM.

What you don't like Tori Amos?
Seriously though, this seems to be a problem with some of the more genre specific stations still. I found this nifty little station called Chill that plays alot of laid back electronic-influenced music and if I am in the car off and on all day I notice some of the same patterns. But on the bigger channels? I havn't seen that at all. (I've had my setup for about a year now.)

I have a home kit thing too. Hardly use it as my home signal is really far to weak. I think it's the windows personally, because if I open them up I get great signal. Besides, with Sirius at least, I can sign up to their website and log in to their little streaming player and get all the stations on my computer. (Not the greatest sound quality, but better than what I would get with that weak signal.)

Xm now offers website streaming, interestingly enough they charge, and they charge just enough that if you have regular service and website streaming then IIRC you're paying the exact same as if you had Sirius which includes web-streaming free.

99% of NFL football occurs either on a Sunday or past 8PM in the evening. If you care about football, why are you spending all your time in a car at these hours? I could understand wanting MLB games or something, because many of those take place when people are out of the home and in traffic or at work or something. I just think Sirius is joking themselves if they think it's going to be a major selling point.

I like Tori Amos....that's why I notice it when they're playing her latest single twice a day on Sirius' "alternative" station. Once I noticed that, I realized that they were playing lots of other stuff frequently. The stations for "old music" didn't seem to have this problem so much.

Congrats border you've readjusted the life of everyone who works on Sundays with your intelligent thinking. :rolleyes

Well at least you won't be out of luck if you need to head out to do something, or are just in general on the road. I was also under the impression that this was not just a spot to listen to the games, but also a place for discussion and news on the sport. I could be wrong thought. And yeah, Darien has a point, not everyone has the typical 9-5 M-F job.

Alot of people do, but not everyone. As a selling point.. well.. maybe it's just that XM's website blows or something, but check this out.

Sirius Benefits and Exsclusives (Check the commercial free thing, I didn't even know that XM has switched to commercial free finally.)

XM Benefits Um.. four things?

It's not just for football games, but NFL discussion 24/7. GOOD ONE XM FANBOY, YOU FOOLED NO ONE!

I will probably get Sirius early next year for Stern, NFL, NPR (I hope Hito doesn't read that!), etc.

Come on Sirius is great but that list is crap.

Look at some of the reasoning:

A diverse lineup of radio, music and sports legends spinning music they love. Our lineup includes Eminem, David Johansen, Grandmaster Flash, Tony Hawk, Vin Scelsa, Liquid Todd, MC Lyte, Kelly Slater, Meg Griffin and many more.

Hello? You can here these same artists on XM.

NFL programming is listed twice.

XM has 2 premium channels.

XM now has an NPR talk station IIRC.

Xm doesn't offer an annual plan, that's true.. they offer 2, 3, 4 and 5 year plans.

Xm has a good # of Talk stations like Sirius does.

Sirius at Radio Shack is a big deal? Ok....

Hmm Sirius forgot to mention that XM is also the exclusive partner of Honda/Acura.

Hmmm now I don't think XM has a gay news channel.

Yeah Listener care for XM is only open Mon - Sat: 6AM - 2 AM ET and Sun: 8 AM - 8 PM ET.

Whatever Federman the world doesn't revolve around the NFL for all sat. radio owners.

Obviously if it DOES then you get Sirius, if it doesn't then you look at what else both services offer.

Yes, there are some heathens that work on The Sabbath and might want to listen to football, but I don't think it's really enough to offset whatever exhorbitant payoff they're handing to the NFL for broadcast rights. A year-round NFL radio station is just insane.....they won't have any decent content for like 6 months of the year.

I do like the NPR content on Sirius.....except that they don't get Fresh Air's weekday edition. XM runs This American Life daily, which is awesome (even if they're reruns).....but they don't have much else in terms of NPR shows. I think with either one, I would probably just end up listening to the local NPR station.

XM does have the Playboy Channel. I think I would probably "use" that more than an NFL channel ;)

I am thinking of getting XM next year as my car stereo is XM-ready, whatever that means.

Hello? You can here these same artists on XM.

You can get Eminem and Tony Hawk DJ'ing on XM as well? I somehow doubt that. I think you misread.

NFL programming is listed twice.

That's because it's twice as awesome as anything listed on XM!

XM has 2 premium channels.

Two premium channels too many!

XM now has an NPR talk station IIRC.

NPR has an exclusive contract with Sirius.

Xm doesn't offer an annual plan, that's true.. they offer 2, 3, 4 and 5 year plans.

Lame. Who knows if I'll even be in the country in two years. Annual plan is the best!

Xm has a good # of Talk stations like Sirius does.

XM has Howard Stern! The King of All Media!

Sirius at Radio Shack is a big deal? Ok....

I'm not quite sure why that is on the list, but Radio Shack is a huge retailer and having no XM stock and all Sirius stock seems to make me think that Sirius RULES.

Hmm Sirius forgot to mention that XM is also the exclusive partner of Honda/Acura.

Except nobody buys Honda.

Hmmm now I don't think XM has a gay news channel.

No gay content? Lame! Homosexuality is the future!

... I think. No wait, it's not. But it's popular. And gay people love radio.

Yeah Listener care for XM is only open Mon - Sat: 6AM - 2 AM ET and Sun: 8 AM - 8 PM ET.

That really doesn't help me between the hours of 2:01 AM - 5:59 AM and those twelve hours on Sunday. Lame!

Whatever Federman the world doesn't revolve around the NFL for all sat. radio owners.

Spoken like a true hater. Don't be upset because Sirius has original NFL programming 24/7. I'm sure you guys get the scores as well.

Obviously if it DOES then you get Sirius, if it doesn't then you look at what else both services offer.

NFL + Howard Stern + Better Mascot = Sirius Must Buy!

No way. You've got the draft, free agency, etc. The NFL Network launched on cable with a similiar format of not only supporting up to the date NFL news and scores, but an insane amount of original content. It'll be fantastic.

Finally, a channel for FOOTBALL FANS.

The fact that someone can actually be this fanboyish even in jest over their sat. radio choice... is quite scary....

Here's the closest thing you'll get to a portable Sirius device this year. Not a dedicated device like the XM MyFi, but it will hold you over until Sirius's real portable device in 2005.

Why choose Sirius over XM?

Sirius is the sattelite radio of choice for many car manufacturers. BMW, MINI, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Nissan, Infiniti, Mazda, Audi, Ford, Lincoln-Mercury, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen, Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Freightliner, Kenworth and Peterbilt; all for Sirius compared to only General Motors and Honda/Acura for XM.

Mel Karmazin- More important than Howard Stern, Sirius's new CEO is the same man that succesfully merged CBS, Viacom, and MTV. He carries a lot of clout and is respected by all in the industry and investors.

In the near future, with their partner with Dish Network, Sirius will be introducing a new service; mobile sattelite video. That's right, everyone with those monitors in their cars can now stream-in video programming. There are also rumblings that Apple and Sirius are in negotiations to include Sirius in a future Ipod model.

First tragedy, then farce.
I had XM in a rental car for two weeks.. it was pretty good, the thing that pissed me off the most is that their stations all have these really cute names that tell you nothing about what kind of music it is.

I really enjoyed it, but I would recomend Sirius, having never tried it, simply because the exclusive programming seems better.
