OPM: Big leap in PS3 coverage for April issue

From the March issue of OPM (thanks to PS3forums).

Just got my newest issue of OPM (March 2006 - #102), and I skimmed it for any PS3 news that they mention. I found it interesting that the Editor-In-Chief, Tom Byron, said this in his "From Me To You" section:

Beyond the obvious "it'll be better than anything you've ever seen before," what we really know isn't a whole heckuva lot. We all want to know the ship date (sooner than you think!), the cost of the system (expensive at first), the cost of games ($70 dollars is not unrealistic), and the list of launch titles. And what about online play? What about HDTV needs? What about GTA4?!

In the coming months, beginning with the April issue, you'll see a big leap in OPM's PS3 coverage.

April issue should be out around the middle of March.

So game prices really ARE going to go up? Bummer. I guess it's a good time to pad my PS2 collection and play lots of unplayed games though.

Say NO to artificially jacked up "next-gen" game prices.

Artificially because the same damn game (CoD2, Condemned, UT2K7, Alan Wake, Oblivion, insert any 360 || PS3 to PC port here) etc. will cost $49.99 on the PC.

Fuck'em, I'm not paying more than $50 for my PS3 games.

I don't give two fucks about how SNES or N64 games were $70 - I always paid $50 for my PC games, always have and always will.

The only $75 console game I bought was Wind Waker: Collector's Edition (the one with Majora's Mask).

Wait, is the top comment also from OPM?

Because the "expensive at first" comment is extremely disheartening if that's the case.

PC developers don't pay licensing fees.

Yeah, you should've worded that better. :P Hey people, the first quoted post are not even rumors from the mag, it's just a question from a reader.

Master System:
Phantasy Star ~ $90 circa 1988. was still $90 in 1990

Genesis:
Phantasy Star II ~ $80 circa 1990

Phantasy Star IV ~ $100 circa 1995

Virtua Racing ~ $100

oh good. 'Cause $450+, Sony is fucked imo.

What do you mean?

$499.99 system

$69.99 games

100 million sold in year one! ;)

$69.99 games make me cringe. I can stomache a 10 dollar price hike, but 20 dollars is pushing it.

The N64 days could be back?

$69.99 regular price, $39.99 Greatest Hits price huzzah! :(

I really hope that Sony isn't stupid enough to have an MSRP of $69.99 for PlayStation 3 titles. There is no scenario where that is justified. Hell, even most of the $59.99 Xbox 360 games have a hard time convincing people they're really worth that much money.

Wait...what? I'm confused. So they were answering their own question?

Editor-In-Chief, Tom Byron said all this regarding PS3 coverage/questions. When covering issues such as price, he said PS3 would be "expensive at first" and that "$70 dollar games is not unrealistic."

This leads me to believe PS3 must be at least $450 or more, but again maybe OPM considers $399 "expensive." I doubt that though, since that's par the course for next gen machines with actual good technology.

Microsoft's expiration date approaches :D
Seriously - what was the point of that comment?

Do you really think that 360s worldwide are going to magically combust the day PS3s hit store shelves?

Will the **** 2006 Seattle Post-Intelligencer scream a bold, above-the-fold "GATES SLASHES 4 IN COCAINE BRAWL AT M$ HQ" headline when Sony announces a hardware release date?

Will an Armageddon-style meteorite strike Redmond Washington, only this time there is no Ben Affleck nor Aerosmith to save us all?

Why don't you go think about that for a while.

70 dollars a game isn't true... If it is, I'm saying bye bye to gaming. Fvck that. Adding a few graphical bells and whistles isn't worth TWENTY extra dollars.

If Sony is planning to charge 70 dollars for games and a higher price than the Xbox360, games on the PS3 better look SIGNIFICANTLY better. I highly doubt that this news is true. Sony isn't that stupid. There were reports that PSP would be like 500, the PS2 would be around the same price when it first launched, etc. etc. But it never ended up like that.

I just can't fathom that Sony would be stupid and arrogant enough to charge $69.99 per game.

Let's hope so, because if any of these things turn out to be true, it's gonna be a abandon camp thing for me until PS3 is 150 with a large bulk of its library at bargain basement prices.

Sony's games are always usually cheaper than other companies, so there's wold like be 50-60. Now 3rd parties could go for the 70 range if they're willing to take a risk.

You know, we could all be falling for the Sony hype machine again.

"Expensive" system. Heard there may be $69.99 games. None of this official.

Then Sony annouces at E3 the PS3 is $299.99 or $349.99, with first party games staying at $49.99, and we all go insane about the low prices because of what rumors we heard.

It is a brilliant plan.

That was... eloquent.

how long have we had $40-$50 games now? inflation is inevitable...

do you all make the same wage you did 5 years ago (assuming you are old enough to be salaried)? probably not... so where does your 3-4% annual increase come from?

do you expect developers to get paid the same as they did 5 years ago? do you expect corporations to sacrifice profits so that their developers get equitable pay?

where does the money come from?

c'mon people work harder, don't be complaining about the price

And devs during the 32-bit era worked "harder" than the devs during the 8-bit era, but prices were (relatively) the same. Your argument doesn't stand.

So yeah, OPM is increasing its PS3 coverage!
Heh...yes, 6 months before the rumored September launch that you predicted is a longshot. No wonder you want to downplay this news :P

You're about as bad as MrBob these days. ;)

The comment is poorly worded - he starts off claiming they don't know alot and lists off what they want to know, yet then include hints that suggest they do know alot...knowing pricing in particular at the time of the writing of this segment is esp. suspect.

What man! 360 is 399.99 (as it should be, given the technology + inflation), and if PS3 was also 399.99 that would not be expensive considering what its tech is!

I hope you're correct. Seriously.

Does anyone here have a problem paying $70 for MGS4?

...I thought so.

Yes, I do have a problem paying $70 for MGS4. And in fact, in that scenario I would wait until the price dropped to $50.

I don't like the developer excuse, because they aren't the ones pocketing the extra money. I would like to see more of my money go back to them instead of the publisher.

Also, it'll be interesting to see if multi platform games will be more expensive on PS3, since they will be the same game between PS3 and X360. I expect $59.99 to be the norm.

Hey now. We know he is a cool cat, but he isn't *that* cool, yet. Well, not until he realizes the greatness of Crackdown! :D

if ps3 is expensive, and the games are that much... i'd still bend over to ken. of course i'd only buy the cream of the crop games (and maybe others in the bargin bin).

but yeah, i think this is just blowing smoke. i doubt games will be more then 60. the console price i could see going for 399 or more quite easily though

I do. I don't care if there's a hidden Monica Bellucci hardcore sex game in MGS4. $60-$70 games should've died with carts. I don't care if it's X360 or PS3. The platform has nothing to do with it. With disc based media you don't have the production costs you had with carts.

Now they're blaming it on soaring game budgets. Well, then you put you damn game on every single platform that can run it to make more money instead of raising the price of the games.

QFTW

Sony's monopoly is ridiculous....I mean wtf...X360 is already out, but I don't feel like im in next gen gaming yet, as I know a lot of companies are holding their games back until the ps3 is out. There better be Halo 3 this e3....
