OPM picks 20 essential Playstation RPG's

I don't understand the LoD hate.

Yes, almost all of it was average, but the battle system was pretty refreshing.

Except for Valkyrie Profile and Vagrant Story, I haven't seen too many other RPGs rely so heavily on forcing timing on to the player.

I enjoy timing in my battle systems. It's one of the reasons I love Valkyrie Profile so much.

I have to say that LoD is definitely better than Azure Dreams.

That game was like diablo, except with harvest moon qualities. I guess if you're big into boring dungeon crawlers, it may be up your ally.

EDIT - Wait, I take that back. While I did hate the dungeon crawler aspect of it, I gotta admit, I remember the harvest moon qualities being fun.

I dunno, 3/5 is a pretty fair score for Samurai Western. It's a fun little game, but it's not a great game. It's the kind of game you pick up when it hits $20.

waiting for an Atlus game to price drop... i dont have that kind of patience. :lol

Atlus games don't drop in price. It's more like the opposite.

You have like 1-3 months before you can't find it and gotta order it off ebay for a jacked up price.

It's rather odd. I loved Chrono Cross when it first came out, but now I can't touch it at all. The battle system doesn't seem as creative and new as it used to, just seems tedious.....

It was just a really mediocre RPG all round. It's not a terrible game or anything though. The most entertaning thing about it was people freaking out when it outsold Chrono Cross in the US.

I don't understand that list at all. A little controversy and a couple of "special" picks are fine, but this list is like advertising that "Hi! We're OPM, and we don't have a fucking clue about PlayStation games!". It doesn't make any sense.

I think that if you own 20 RPGs on one system, it's time for an intervention.

i tried to play legend of dragoon, but it wouldn't play because it had that cd protection thing that detected modchips. i guess i was blessed

thats nonsense, my ntsc-us legend of dragoon works fine with my modded pal psone.

One of my main gripes with PS2 RPG's compared to PSone RPG's is the lack of light hearted RPG's. Everything is so damn serious now, which is fine as long as there's a light hearted one around every now and then. Hopefully Atelier Iris and Grandia 3 will fill those spots nicely.

I own 34 RPGs for the Playstation 1 console including SRPGs and ARPGs.

Not including those, it's at least 28+

I'm nearing 15+ for PS2 including SRPGs and ARPGs.

Likewise, give or take (though for me it's 20+ for PS2, and 31 for PSOne, unless you count the FF anthologies as >1 game ;)

I do, though I don't agree with it. LoD is one of the most unjustly hated-on games of the last couple of generations. That's not to say it's actively good, but there were plenty of worse RPGs on PSX.

Um. Fair enough. Is it annual lie-through-your-teeth day again already?

how in gods name can you leave off Breath of Fire 3? :(

From that list? Because the random number generator didn't pick it out. Personally I'd probably leave it off because of the irritating emphasis on status ailments in the combat system, and the stunningly generic nature of most of the game. Although it might creep on to my top 20 list because the pre-V BoF games are definitely among my favourite not-quite-there RPGs.

After TheGia review I just had to play LoD and I don't think it was that bad, not even close to being as bad as they and some others make it out to be.. *shrugs

People actually like Azure Dreams? It's one of the few games I've returned to the store, just for being all kinds of shitty.

Vandal Hearts 2? Thousand Arms? Cripes, you make OPM look good. :p

Man, I've never seen anyone who liked Vandal Hearts 2 before.

Vandal Hearts 2 was AWFUL. It was only a strategy game with NO STRATEGY involved. Knowing exactly where each enemy unit would go kinda made the game dumb because you could ALWAYS end up behind them. It was just horrible, especially since Vandal Hearts 1 was quite fun.

Where's Vandal Hearts 2 and Thousand ARMS?!?!?

Well, they certainly wouldn't be out of place on that list... Throw in Eternal Eyes for good measure, with a side order of Granstream Saga...

10 copies of each? :P

haha yes.

And off topic I'm sorry about everything last time. I was drunk that day. :lol

If you don't remember what I'm talking about, that's good too. :P

Hey, I enjoyed Granstream Saga. (well, minus the faceless characters, that is :lol) :(

And the lack of Tactics Ogre on many of your lists makes me all the sadder. Best strat-RPG ever, dammit!
