Oppenheimer (2023) | Official Trailer

As soon as I saw a shot of marbles in the trailer, I couldn't think of anything else and couldn't concentrate on the trailer anymore

LOL, I love that one. Key and Peele were so good at either just having the most insane premises sometimes, or a normal scene ends up going completely batshit (like that one where they’re checking out a lady, it seems Peele has no knowledge on female anatomy, but rather than being extremely sheltered, he’s an ALIEN!).

Anyway, I have no need to watch this trailer. It’s Christopher Nolan, so that of course means:

Looks like a good movie to watch. Funny thing is when I hear Oppenheimer, the first thing I think of is Oppenheimer Funds. Some banking company I remember TVs ad from.

James Gunn is going to tweet that after a productive meeting atoms will no longer be atomic.

Movie is going to be a highlight.

Y E S !!!!!

INTO MY FUCKING VEINS !!!!

That score starting in the 2nd half of the trailer is very Man Of Steel esque. Thumping drum beats. Day fucking 1

Meh. We've heard those old-school loud deep bass notes and piercing warning sounds far too many times in Nolan's movie trailers. Such a shame they squandered the opportunity to create a slowed down and stripped down version of "Manhattan Project" by the band Rush sung by a children's choir on tranquilizers.

Imagine a time
When it all began in the dying days of a war
A weapon, that would settle the score
Whoever found it first
Would be sure to do their worst
They always had before

Imagine a man
Where it all began
A scientist pacing the floor
In each nation, always eager to explore
To build the best big stick
To turn the winning trick
But this was something more

In fact, after watching the video of this Rush song again, I see no reason to see Oppenheimer in a cinema. The story is all there in a 5 minute music video, what's left to tell? How can Christopher Nolan ever improve on the timeless words of Canada's bard Neal Peart?

Imagine a place
Where it all began
They gathered from across the land
To work in the secrecy of the desert sand
All of the brightest boys
To play with the biggest toys
More than they bargained for

Imagine a man
When it all began
The pilot of Enola Gay
Flying out of the shock wave
On that August day
All the powers that be
And the course of history
Would be changed for evermore

The big bang, took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The end was begun, it would hit everyone
When the chain reaction was done
The big shots, try to hold it back
Fools try to wish it away
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say

I dont understand this statement.

Isn't that a direct quote from Oppenheimer? What's wrong with the statement?

If the movie is set in the time he said that quote......why wouldnt they say it?
Because it's a quote that has been overused and abused to the point where it's corny.

I wonder if this will have a Nolan trademark-twist or if it's a straight up biopic.

Still baffled that this is being made, honestly. Such a niche subject.

Don't worry, I can almost promise you that they will feature the bomb going off in slow motion as he speaks his quote in a somber tone.

It's not gonna be a cliche at all.
"Never bring that fucking cretin in here again. He didn't drop the bomb. I did. That kind of weepiness makes me sick."
- President Truman to Secretary of State Dean Acheson, regarding Oppenheimer.

With the "destroyer of worlds" quote, Oppenheimer would totally be a redditor had he been alive today.

Truman: “hey, fuck that guy who helped make it possible for us to have such a weapon in the first place! I’m going to call him a cretin, because calling a clear genius ‘stupid’ makes total sense!”

Heaven forbid a guy feel bad retrospectively in having any hand in the deaths of millions. Truman sounds so childish in that moment. It’s like, yes, they knew they needed to make advancements to end the war faster. Doesn’t mean they have to feel good about it. And Oppenheimer was hardly the only one involved in the project who felt shitty being part of it.

Maybe Truman was just pissed that he knew deep down that Oppenheimer‘s quote would be remembered long throughout history over anything Truman ever said. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

(to be clear, Truman obviously made a lot of great decisions in his time as President. Still doesn’t mean he can’t take a L every now and then)

Farman and littleboy combined killed less than a million people. I think around 500,000. The bombs killed fewer Japanese civilians than civilians killed by Japanese soldiers.

We also got atomic energy out of the research too so that was good.

FYI, I didn't make the meme.
I just found it funny. And I know nuclear weapons never actually killed millions.

FYI it’s ok I don’t blame you for never reading a book. /joke

Don’t stress I was just adding context to a fire meme. There is irony to creating the weapon and saying “ I am become death destroyer of worlds.” I am sure he knew that too.

214,000.

Though the radiation after effects are thought to have killed a substantial amount more in the years afterwards.

Your point holds true though - many more Japanese died at the hands of the empire, and many, many more would have died had the bombs not been dropped.

Definition of necessary evil, unfortunately.

I didn’t want to underestimate because that would open a can of worms.

It's Nolan. Guaranteed $400 million box office. Budget is only $100 million. He's not expecting it to be a massive hit anyway.

I don't think it'll bomb at all. For me personally it's my most anticipated film of 2023.
Tenet made $340 million five months into the pandemic when 70% of the theaters were closed and no one was going to the movies. People underestimate Nolan and Cameron. I have no idea why.

They have both cracked the formula for what makes a blockbuster that people want to see. Nolan hasnt made a sequel or comic book movie in 10 years and yet he continues to make hit after hit.

Pretty sure nuclear reactors were on track through multiple countries’ research without building the bomb, which is like a totally different technology…but arguably the bomb kept the peace throughout the Cold War and made Japan finally surrender in spite of coup attempts to keep it going.

At the end of the day far too much emphasis is put in the atomic bombings IMO. Fire bombings were just as atrocious, if a necessary (lesser) evil than the alternatives.

Yeah, tokyo fire bombings resulted in 120k deaths.

More than Nagasaki and Hiroshima combined.

Dresden fire bombings killed 35k people in just three days of fire bombings. Mostly civilians.

Like the trailer says, the bomb is a necessary evil.

I've always been fascinated by ominous existence of this guy.

> His life was basically, spend 20 years studying science and philosophy.
> Helps create the first nuclear bomba
> Retires and sails his boat with his wife and kid until he dies of throat cancer
> Wife then dies of some stomach inffection
> Daughter hangs herself after being divorced
> His beach house he built as the family home is destroyed in a hurricane

Literally nothing left of this guy except his legacy of creating nuclear weapons. He died at 62 years old.

I can think of few people in human history with such mundane yet hugely impactful and destructive lives.

I always find it weird how he was supposedly this philosophical figure that studied hinduism and shit just beeing A-OK with his job developing a bomb that can wipe out hundreds of thousands, millions of peoples in seconds.

Not gonna lie. As an adult whenever I pass by some marbles in a shop I almost start sweating thinking of how many thousands of them I could buy. But now I'll only think of how it'll feel with them rolling around my tongue, clacking against the row of my teeth as I fight against the urge to bite them. :lollipop_downcast_sweat:

Looking very much forward to the movie!

Is it odd for a director to switch from Fantasy to Non-Fiction? Mr. Nolan has a solid resume, and many of his movies sit among my all time favorites, but I don't think I'll watch this one in theaters. If I was going to buy a ticket and popcorn and soda it would be for the Avatar movie, or BP2 I suppose. I will definitely be catching Oppen when it drops on streaming, though.
