Taiwan market: Optoma plans to launch 1080p projectors in 2Q06 priced up to 40% lower than current models

With Texas Instruments (TI) recently announcing the official launch of TI’s new DLP 1080p resolution (1920×1080) chip in Taiwan, Optoma stated the company is scheduled to offer 1080p projectors in the local Taiwan market, staring from the second quarter of 2006. The company expects to offer the projectors priced up to 40% lower than current 1080p models [EDIT: Current 1080p models being the Sony Ruby]

TI announced the rollout of its 1080p resolution (1,920×1,080) chips for the front projection market earlier this month.

Eric Braddom, the director of Asia TI DLP projects, explained that 1080p’s high definition is the next wave in digital TVs. Currently, major US TV networks have already started transmitting 1080i HD signals. NICI (National Information and Communications Initiative Committee) of the Executive Yuan in Taiwan has also expressed its intent to broadcast HD resolution TV by 2007. In addition, along with the rising popularity of Blu-ray DVD and HD DVD, the world of gaming and movies are expected to trend toward true high definition resolutions, according an Optoma press release.

According to a report from Pacific Media Associates (PMA), DLP projectors constituted 60.8% of the overall projector market in Taiwan in the second quarter of 2005.

Optoma decided to volume produce projectors that adopt TI’s 1080p chips (H81) in the second quarter of 2006, according to Telly Kuo, Optoma vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific Region. The products will be priced at NT$150,000-200,000 (US$4,510-6,013) and will soon replace high-end 720p products.

Currently, the retail prices for 1080p projectors in the local Taiwan market are NT$250,000-300,000 (US$7,517-9,020). The company plans to launch a new 720p projector by the end of this year, priced less than NT$100,000 (US$3,006), down from NT$189,000 (US$5,682) at present, Kuo said.

FYI, Single-chip Front projector 1080p DLPs will not be based on the wobulated xHD4s.......they will have a full 1920 x 1080 mirrors on the chip itself, so it will be a *true* 1080p chip......

Apperenly, wobulated xHD4s are designed for RPTVs only and don't work well on front projectors, according to TI...

I can't wait until all HDTVs are no more than $1000

You can buy great 30" widescreen HD CRTs in the grand-range now. Why wait...

I'm interested to hear the reviews for this ... I'm not sure how I feel about the wobbulated ones - it has pros and cons. It's good to see TI is finally bringing out full res DLPs.

This chip is a direct competitor with LCoS. I wonder how it will compare in black-level, shadow detail, etc?

The chip being cheaper than 'other technologies' is a bit of a misnomer though. Comparing a single-chip to a 3-chip solution is obviously not apple to oranges. Unfortunately, rainbows will still be a reality with this.

Matters the usage. If someone has a decent-sized home, a 30" isn't gonna cut it in a living room - at least by todays 'standards'.

Most in this situation plan to wait for the smaller RPTV's (40+") to come down to that price-point before they bother upgrading to HD.

So you dont feel like idiot when next year sets are half the price and double the resolution. Abit of an exaggeration but thats basicly what it feels like, like the video card market.

I'm buying an HD set in the coming weeks.

I wasn't planning on getting one until next fall, but winning the X360 changed that plan, and now I'm getting a set much sooner and probably for much more money than I would next year.

Nah, even though I too won a X360.. I'm still not going to cave. I'm going to wait until mid 2006 before picking up an HDTV set.

Well, I suppose that's easy to say now, but I'm really curious what X360 is going to look like through component on my 480i Toshiba.

I'd be going the same route if I had a TV with component inputs, or even S-video. As it is, the TV in my room doesn't accept anything but coax input, so I've got to run my game systems through my VCR.

And? You can say that for any major technology. If you honestly embrace that mindset you'll never wind up buying anything...not that that isn't a good idea itself. :D

I'm going to buy myself a nice 37" HD LCD in the next few weeks. Then thats it with me until I can cover my wall with a paper thin TV for £1k.

(well, I'll buy a 1080p front projector when they are a reasonable price too :)
