Is there a way to do this without modding? I have a PAL xbox and have this chinese dvd / remote kit, and not the official one, but I haven't tried it with region 1 dvds since I don't have any right now. Does anyone have experience with this?

yup that's true...my US xbox reads region 2 DVDs thanks to the japanese dvd-kit...but I believe the region code will be lock to whatever dvd-kit u are using in that xbox...so u cant keep changing the dvd-kit to change the region code.
