PAL Charts - Week 25, 2013

Anyone think it just could be too late now for the Wii U over here to make an impact. I know there are games coming down the line but the console has zero mindshare and with the Xbox One and PS4 on the horizon I just think even with new software the console sales will still be sluggish.

It’s not even doing 1k a week at the moment and hasn’t done for months. I know there has been a software drought but 1000 units is nothing and for it not to do even that means even with new software its going to take a miracle for the sales to improve tenfold and remain at that number for a consistent period.

Its pretty much dead software wise. The new titles will give it a boost but only in the short term, after the holidays, without any third party support it on't take too long before to goes back.

It's not dead, but it's not showing any signs of life either. When the Xbone and PS4 arrive, I can see it becoming utterly irrelevant. It'll be sandwiched between two next gen beasts and two far cheaper machines with far bigger libraries.

Even the N64 & 'Cube seemed to have a bigger buzz than the Wii-U.

Dude, that's just the initial installer, it will then download assets from the ND (AWS) servers which takes a while before you can start gaming, maybe 20-30 mins.

Thanks man. As per normal I got excited.

I did the 137odd MB initial DL. Now, "in game", it says I have 1hr 20mins left. I'm hoping it checked free space on the HDD before starting cos I've an awful lot of games on there and hope there'll be enough space.

I can’t remember a new console in its first year having so little buzz. There was very little excitement at launch and from then onwards it’s just got worse to where we are now being completely off the radar.

I just don’t see how it can be turned around when the next gen consoles on coming and as you say the 360/PS3 will still be there. Not forgetting come holiday season the 3DS will have Pokémon so that’s another device competing for people’s wallets.

In every region its struggling and can’t really speak for anywhere else but in the UK it seems to be @ rock bottom.

Another problem with Wii U is that the cross gen titles (or next gen) aren't being announced for it.

Do we have something about Mario Kart 7? For having the high limit for Animal Crossing.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf debut week - higher than NSMB2 (32,600).

Animal Crossing: New Leaf first week - more than 32,600
Animal Crossing: New Leaf second week (-55%) - more than 14,670

Animal Crossing: New Leaf LTD - more than 47,270

I have found these estimates you posted.

03 (02) PS3 Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision Blizzard) ~58,794
04 (03) NDS Professor Layton And The Spectre's Call (Nintendo)
05 (__) 3DS Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo)
06 (08) 3DS Super Mario 3d Land (Nintendo) <51,040
07 (05) 360 Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Ubisoft) <46,746
08 (11) 360 Fifa 12 (Electronic Arts) ~41,548

I have found these estimates you posted.

It's a quite large range, then. 50k could be a good guess. So.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf debut - less than 50,000
Animal Crossing: New Leaf second week (-55%) - less than 22,500

Animal Crossing: New Leaf LTD - more than 47,270 and less than 72,500

As already said, quite a big range.

Second week of sales:

PS3 UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES (SONY COMPUTER ENT.) - 39.500 / 123.500 (-53%)
PS3 UNCHARTED 3: DRAKE'S DECEPTION (SONY COMPUTER ENT.) - 32.500 / 148.500 (-72%)
PS3 THE LAST OF US (SONY COMPUTER ENT.) - Over 43.700 - Under 59.300 / Over 127.700 - Under 173.300 (-48%)

Excellent.

TLOU sales in the UK better than UC2 and on par or maybe even better than UC3 in the first 2 weeks. And the uncharted games were released during the holiday period. Damn son...

The best bit....its a new IP.
Not to sound like a fanboy but I honestly do believe that only under Sony was TLoU possible. Here's how I imagine other publishers would have treated it:

Microsoft: It's not one of our core IPs so the project won't be greenlit.
Activision: It won't sell 10 million so the project won't be greenlit.
EA: Good idea but let's make it more visceral.
Ubi: Let's wait until new consoles come out to release it.
Nintendo: How about it's a spin off from Uncharted so that we can get huge sales?

Holy shit.

They are going up against a great line-up for 360/PS3 and then you have the launch of PS4/XBO which will have a lot of those big titles and then even more. They're going to get drowned out from all of that.

Plus, their line-up for the rest of the year just isn't good enough. Way too many games are 2014. Look at the rest of 2013 for first party:

June: Game & Wario
July: Pikmin 3
August: Wonderful 101
October: Wind Waker HD, Wii U Party
November: Donkey Kong
December: Super Mario 3D World, Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics, Wii Fit U

They could have done with Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros being a Christmas titles. I just don't see any huge titles there that are going to reverse its fortunes this year.

I imagine even saying "less than 1000 a week" is generous at this stage.

Position 40 in the middle of the sales doldrums of Summer is quite possibly a bit lower than 1K.

Four Wii U games for me for the rest of this year. This console is great for my bank balance. I love it!

I got it at launch and bought NSMB U and Zombie U. 7 months later they are still the only two retail games purchased. Good for my bank balance is a huge understatement!!!

TLOU must be doing great at retail; it was murder trying to track down a copy, everywhere seemed to be sold out.

Glad to see Animal Crossing up there as well, I've been having tons of fun with it and it deserves the success.

Poor Wii U, as per usual.

Between PS4, X1 and current gen consoles getting stuff like GTAV, GT6, a new COD, etc, I really don't see anyone giving a damn about the wiiU, especially with that price tag.

Well seeing that Iwata "just doesn't care too much about the competition" I doubt anyone at Nintendo is able to come to a similar conclusion.

Well that's completely wrong.

All of them would have taken the risk if the game was from a studio with as good a record and pedigree as Naughty Dog.

the writing is on the wall, people can choose to accept it or not.

The situation is much different to the 3DS. People seem to use 'they turned the 3DS around' line when talking about the prospects of the Wii U but I dont think its a similar situation.

If you forget about Virtual Boy this is uncharted territory for Nintendo isnt it?

I believe it's performing worse than the gamecube, so yeah, it's a new low (people that pay more attention to sales numbers can verify or correct this statement).
It's nothing like the 3DS, as some people have mentioned before. Nintendo has two platforms on the market, wii and wiiU. The wii is dead and the wiiU is in a coma. Sony and Microsoft both have one platform on the market, with ACTUAL 3rd party support this year at a cheaper price than the wiiU. Add both the ps4 and xb1 hype and marketing machine for fall this year and it's not going to be pretty.

Definitely arguable. Most if not every single one of these publishers has (or still has) had a studio of a pedigree similar to Naughty Dog, yet what happened? Yeah, rather than to accommodate to their wishes, many publishers have opt to set restrictions and requirements for their games leading to many important personnel fleeing the company, consequently diminishing the quality of the studio. Naughty Dog is very exceptional in the sense that it has continued making quality games for roughly three generations, while continuing to grow and better itself; arguably with ND too however, they haven't had as much freedom as before until now that they have finally established themselves as a premier development house. For mere opposites, one only has to take a look at the fall of many old school legends like Bioware and Rare.

All of them? No way. Microsoft, Ubisoft and Activision would've had them making Uncharted games until everyone quit or were pushed out.

Ubisoft would have a gigantic open-world Uncharted where you have to clear out nests of enemies and find treasure to scrub icons off a mini-map ;-)

At least we have ranges, but damnit if they are not large as fuck.

I agree. MS is taking a risk with Sunset Overdrive, that's a weird ass IP to me and IG is not even close to as good as ND. There's a reason ND, SSM, PD can do whatever the fuck they want and Zipper and BigBig get shut down.

I don't think that's a case that can be made.

Acti, for example, has (or had) a great number of fantastic studios that were generally allowed to their own thing until they failed to deliver the sales that Acti was hoping for.

Bizaare is just one example of this. Publishers can't continue to support a studio if they fail to deliver the sales. This is the problem, ND had great success with Uncharted, which them allowed them to push ahead with TLoU, whereas if they hadn't had the success with UC that they had, I doubt they would have been given the level of freedom and support they have been given.

You only need to look at Studio Liverpool (Still hurts) to see what happens when a studio is deemed to be not delivering.

All of them? No way. Microsoft, Ubisoft and Activision would've had them making Uncharted games until everyone quit or were pushed out.

I'm not so sure, all of them (with the exception of 2005 onwards Nintendo) have at some point allowed their big studios or funded studios to work on original IP that may or may not be successful.

ND struck gold with Uncharted, which allowed them to do TLoU. Success is key.

ND is a top tier developer now in line with greats like R* and Valve. If they keep growing, and their franchises keep growing, I can see Uncharted 4 or TLOU2 selling as well as Halo or COD on a single console.

Indeed. ND have seen massive success this generation and it's mostly thanks to UC. I can't wait to see what they do on PS4.

It's a shame Studio Liverpool, Zipper, etc didn't see similar success. Gone but never forgotten.

His point is that no other publisher would have let one of their big studios to develop a new high budget IP for launch in year 7 of the console's life.

I agree.

I agree.

I don't know if that was his original point, but if it was, then I'd certainly agree that most would probably not publish the game on their current gen console that's due to be replaced in a few short months.

I don't agree that most of them wouldn't allow development of such an IP tho, especially if the studio behind it had the level of success ND has enjoyed.

Saying that, Sony have form in doing this. God of War 2 on the PS2 for example.

Not good at all, but Lego City Undercover and Monster Hunter have been in the charts. So yor question is wrong to begin with.

Last game to chart was Sonic Racing in week 17, I think. It was being sold for under a tenner that week IIRC.

Not good. Not good at all.

So happy to see The Last Of Us selling well. Handily beat Bioshock Infinite as my game of the year and simply is one of the best games of the generation.

Great hold for TLOU, intrigued to see how well it launches in Japan now
