PAL Charts - Week 33 - 34, 2011

Blame retailers, they thought no-one would buy it and thus did not order enough. France shops received much more copies on day 1.

This is stil not true. Many retailers were frustrated before launch, because Nintendo couldn't meet their demand.

Actually, I think that in the current light, it's likely that Gamekyo's shipment numbers are not French numbers but European ones.

Yeah, they don't really say whether they are for Europe or France-only. 38000 seems like a really low number though.

I really find it hard to believe that Nintendo wouldn't ship enough to cover preorders.

38k hmm let's say 10k for UK, 10k for France, 10k for Germany with the remaining 8k divided between Benelux, Spain, Italy... and bergsala handling their own inventory yeah I can see that.

That's like throwing away free money. If it were cartridges I could I understand the caution, but for DVDs why would they do this except to prove a point?

If what I gather is true (and it's mostly just the ramblings of several retailers) Nintendo regarded Xenoblade as some kind of fan-service and realized too late that their actually is demand.

They did pull the game forward two weeks but then left Italy behind for some reason. I can only assume due to not being able make enough stock to fully cover the region.

I totally have no idea of the process involved in disc pressing and packaging or how many copies can be made per hour etc...

So Inazuma Eleven. Its close to LEGO Pirates DS so we might be able to get some estimate on that too...I'm guessing on sub 2000 though.

"might" get a bump next week, nintendo games ofter seem to do better week 2 and i've been very surprised to actually see tv ads for it

I've been tracking Dirt 3, which sold ~5700 this week. With Ass. Creed 360 one place below Dirt PS3, and IE one place below Ass. Creed PS3 there should be a pretty good estimate for IE. That's if Guardian remember to publish the Top20 on a Tuesday.

In Spain it's impossible to find a copy since the first day so you're probably right.

Nintendo is one of the few that doesn't buy back unsold stock from retailers. So initial orders are always low and when Nintendo starts their marketing thing(usually way too late) the retailers see an increase in demand but Nintendo will simply tell them: "Well sorry guys but production is already finished/underway so you can't change your orders now"

The same thing happened with Donkey Konga, Wii console and many other games, the biggest problem was the 2006 disk shortage games like Super Mario Galaxy were in short supply for weeks and months. Nintendo expects retailers to order more after the first shipment but European retailers have become rather cautious because so many unsold games and consoles were sitting in stores for months on end due to Microsoft, Sony, Ubisoft and all stuffing the channels.

Did search, couldn't find new topic. Guardian artile is up.

I wonder if the Duexs Ex split inculdes a DD estimate as it adds up to 90.

If you look at the chart they give to the media they actually give the shares for top 4 SKUs, separated by price. I think Guardian hasn't added the PS3 and PC collectors editions, because these were the fifth and sixth highest selling SKUs and not included in the chart supplied to them.

http://www.gamersdailynews.com/ELSPA/092009/ELSPA - All Charts 09-2009.xls

Fortunately we have the full split from Chart-Track, but it's something to consider in future if the percentages don't add up to around 100% taking into account rounding error.

Xenoblade's still in the individual formats chart (at 14th), but I suspect that's the last we'll see of it unless there's a reprint. Which I think Nintendo have to be considering, surely?

So, what is a typical ratio of UK:USA sales?

Just going off raw population, it'd be ~5-1. Using that Deus Ex week one USA sales might be ~600k?

Add in lets say continental EU~UK sales? Maybe a little higher so lets say 1.5x? ~180k in EU outside UK?

So ~800k there, not counting PC download, not counting maybe a few other markets like Canada, week one.

I guess that's good. I mean sometimes raw sales dont tell the story obviously, LA Noire seemed like a hit but in reality needed to sell much more to recoup it's dev costs.

Wow, those are some serious assumptions you're making considering we have not a single verified number to base them on. It guess that's how vgchartzzz is working. :lol

There isn't a typical. It varies largely by game.

I can tell you is that 257 million units of software were sold in the US in 2010 compared to 63 million in the UK. A 4:1 ratio. You can use that ratio, but it absolutely doesn't mean that that it is even close to being the reality for that particular game.

It's based off tracking Dirt 3 from the monthly charts posted in Famitsu and the weekly percentage change given by Chart-Track. They can be verified or proved false by the monthly charts, but I just do them for my own personal use, so I'll stop posting them if there is an issue with it.

Oh, in that case he does have a point :p

As a rough rule of thumb I'd say UK is about 10% of the Global market, but you can't just extrapolate UK to the whole world, or even Europe or US.

Xenoblade Chronicles is no longer available, online at least.

On August 22nd Sony Computer Entertainment Australia drastically cut the retail price of the PlayStation 3, a move mimicked around the globe. According to Sony the effect was pleasing to their sales department.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia today revealed a PlayStation®3 (PS3™) sales surge of over 400% in the week following implementation of the recent price drop across the 160GB and 320GB models in Australia. This is based on official NPD Group Australia sales data1 from retailers nationally.

“This new price point really represents fantastic value for money as PlayStation 3 delivers full HD games, Blu-ray capability, plus music, movies, catch-up TV and more on demand,” said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia.

“Australians love not only games, but also the quality home entertainment PS3 provides. Sales are booming because PlayStation 3 is the best device to connect to your TV, at incredible value, to provide the ultimate home entertainment experience."

The new recommended retail price of the cutting-edge entertainment device, PlayStation 3, at just RRP $349.95 for 160GB and RRP $449.95 for 320GB model, represents a significant saving of approximately $150 on the former recommend retail price. It was effective in-stores on 22 August, 2011.

NPD does worldwide sales now I think. They announced it a few months ago.

Only for digital distribution though, not physical retail or hardware. It's also probably from a consumer panel, and not a retail panel.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/npd-comes-to-the-uk-offers-complete-market-reports/082898

EB Games and JB Hifi pulled out of GfK Australia's retail panel at the beginning of 2010, so GfK Australia stopped publishing the software charts, although they did produce an annual report for 2010 with overall figures at least. Sony quite often gave out hardware sales from GfK prior to this, but I don't think I've seen any since, which is why it's surprising to see them now use "NPD Group Australia".

Fake edit:

It seems they've since been bought out by NPD;

Its annual sales data report, compiled by NPD Group Australia (formerly GfK Retail and Technology Australia)

http://asia.gamespot.com/features/6330768/oz-industry-insights-future-of-retail/index.html

But there doesn't seem to be any news about this, the only other citing I can find about them is for this 2011 H1 Top 10;

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/au-charts-black-ops-still-number-one-in-first-half-of-2011/082696

TV vendors described their TV data since the loss of JB Hifi and others as "pure fiction" earlier this year, so I'd also take their games data with a pinch of salt too, they just don't have very good coverage anymore.

Anyone have another source? Numbers come from Enterbrain.
The numbers appear on one of the weekly Famitsu magazines. This month they were posted on 2ch. I'd rather that blog continued, since 2ch posters like to make up stuff often, but since we're not in Japan, our only option is to hope they are real.

Market information appears on weekly MCV magazines. (A shame Famitsu has no digital version either free or paid.)

That looks more like a weekly chart than a monthly one! July must have been the worst month for the UK games market for some time.

Week 33, 2011

01 (__) [WII] Xenoblade Chronicles (Nintendo)
02 (01) [3DS] The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo)
03 (__) [WII] Xenoblade Chronicles + Classic Controller Pro (Nintendo)
04 (02) [WII] Zumba Fitness (Digital Bros)
05 (04) [PS3] Call of Duty : Black Ops (Activision Blizzard)

France does not disappoint. :p

Not surprised, but still pleased. Not that RPGs are always my cup of tea, but this one seems genuinely good (better than most RPGs in the last 5 years at any rate), and anything that can push NOA to release more games is a good thing in my book.

France loves Japanese (sub)culture, including Japanese games, Nintendo and the Wii. It makes sense that Xenoblade should perform that well.

Cool, the tracking was quite close;

Dammit BKK, you're contribution is the biggest in these threads since.... I don't know when !

Awesome job, keep delivering boss :)

That 38K number Xenoblade first shipment for whole Europe isn't close to the real by the way.

First week sales beated Nintendo expectations (by a bit).

Square Enix and Eidos’ ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution’ (-46%) has held off Ubisoft’s new release ‘Driver: San Francisco’ despite nearly halving in sales from last week’s opening gambit to claim a second week at No1. Just like Deus Ex, it’s another rejuvenation of a franchise having been over four years since the last iteration in the Driver series (Driver 76 on PSP and Driver: Parallel Lines on Wii and PC were both released in 2007) with the Xbox 360 just ahead of the PS3 taking 53% of the share to PS3’s 46%.

505 Games’ two titles, ‘Zumba Fitness’ ( -19%) and ‘Rugby World Cup 2011’ (-30%), continue to stick together, both down a place at No3 and No4 respectively.

Also shuffling down a place is Disney’s ‘Lego Pirates of the Caribbean’ (-16%) at No5 with EA’s new entry, American football title ‘Madden NFL 12’, charging in at No6.

Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (+3%) is at No7 with Disney’s ‘Cars 2’ (-9%) following behind at No8.

EA round of the top ten with ‘FIFA 11’ (-6%) at No9 and ‘The Sims 3’ (+3%) at No10.

The only other new entry to make it into the Top 40 this week is Codemasters’ ‘Bodycount’ at No36.
