Highest Grossing Video Games of All Time.

My apologies if its incorrect thread for this information. Dont see a need to make a new thread out of it.

Curious to know where they got their data from. The numbers on that chart seem like total nonsense and I just can't see how they could possibly reflect reality.

I was actually going to post something similar a while back when the awards were issued. Looking at the big games we know numbers on I could see UK had way more sales. Would be really interesting to see a breakdown.

Not sure about Driveclub, lets have a look at FiFA, Fallout, Star Wars Battlefront. Perhaps Bruno can chime in but they seem quite a bit higher.

FIFA 16 release on Sept 22nd and sold 300k on PS4 in its first week.
Got the >200k award for PS4 in Germany in September.

I doubt it's really that far off.

Uk sales on individual top titles are higher - there is no doubt about this. Uk is absolutly hardcore - see GTA V numbers that put even Japan into shame. Overall console title sales will still be higher than in germany.
But that doesn't have to be true for individual formats and certain titles. Especially games like Until Dawn or The Order - those might do better in Germany. Uk is still king. But UK is UK. And the mentioned Forza is a title that didn't do very well in europe. Racing games sell a lot of units in those EU countries where we never get numbers from.
So it is not that easy. Fifa and CoD will probably do sell more in UK - may be even PS4 only. But it is not so easy to tell anymore as a lot things have changed.

UK games retail suffers disappointing 2015, as software sales tumble 6%

More than 28m physical games were sold in the UK last year, a drop of six per cent over 2014.

That’s according to the latest figures from GfK Chart-Track. These numbers are actually all the more disappointing, because Chart-Track’s weekly data actually counted 53 weeks of 2015, whereas 2014 had just 52 weeks.

PS4 and Xbox One software sales rose sharply for the year, but big declines on Xbox 360 and PS3 pulled the overall market downwards. Wii U game sales increased slightly.

Because of the increase in sales of higher-margin Xbox One and PS4 titles, UK physical software sales revenue reached £928m for 2015, which is a smaller drop of 2.2 per cent over 2014.

These figures only count physical retail sales, digital numbers are not included, so the overall market picture may be healthier (and is, in fact, likely to be).

But, in better news for games retail, there were four games released last year that sold over 1m copies. FIFA 16 was the best-selling game of the year, followed by a resurgent Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Bethesda’s Fallout 4 and Star Wars: Battlefront, which reached 1m sales by the end of the year.

I wouldn't be confident in saying that, it's the UK where prices are inflated to hell so the digital % must be tiny compared to some other regions. But Halo 5, Gears UE, RR and Witcher 3 were all priced fairly compared to retail, so I do think this years digital % will be up. Last year only had MCC and Forza Horizon 2 if I remember correctly.

The entertainment sales chart for 2015 should be published today or tomorrow.

Here our estimates:

Fifa 16 (Electronic Arts) - 2,512,800
Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Activision Blizzard ) - 1,930,500
Fallout 4 (Bethesda Softworks) - 1,123,100
Star Wars Battlefront (Electronic Arts) - 1,005,200

Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two Interactive) -

Impressive estimates Bruno. Thanks for your amazing contributions..

I hope Sony had a good enough holidays to announce more hardware numbers on CES presentation

2007 - 75,900,000 units / £1,720m
2006 - 65,400,000 units / £1,376m

I noticed a contradiction.

On the one hand we have this source that says that software sales revenue in 2007 was £1.72 billion, but on the other hand we have this other source that says that it was £1.552 billion. It's a shame that the 2008 report didn't say anything about 2007 units sales, but I figure out they must also be different from previous year report.

If the first source is incorrect, then 2006 results I have posted will also be wrong.

Edit: 2006 figures calculated from 2007 report are in line with actual figures from 2006 report, so the only explanation I have is that MCV forget to extrapolate the 2007 number to 100% of the market when they compared 2008 results to the previous year. I guess the problem is solved.

£1.552 billion (90%) / £1.724 billion (100%)

2006 was record year for UK games industry, says ELSPA

ELSPA has declared that the British videogames industry hit an "all time high" in 2006 with a 7 per cent increase in the number of games sold - bringing the total figure to 65.1 million units.

All-formats sales totalled GBP 1.36 billion - a new record, according to ELSPA, and an increase of 1 per cent over the figure for 2005.

Videogames are dying! I knew it! :p

But seriusly, that's big a drop... wow.

How in the hell did TR sell a million.

It's not that hard to figure out.

For example, if December sales in the US were similar to those achieved in November, which is within the realm of possibility because the game had a very modest launch and there were some nice deals, then the total in just that region would be around 400,000 units. Then, add what it sold in the UK and we have a total figure that easily exceeds 500,000 units without including worldwide digital sales and retail figures from practically all Europe, Oceania, Canada and other minor markets.

Peaked in 2008, so I wonder if that's the Wii effect.
But yeah, they don't count digital but assuming it was in the single digits ten years ago it still doesn't account for the drop. I wonder, does GfK track Amazon and the like? I think NPD does, but not sure about them.

How in the hell did TR sell a million.

I guess next NPD will give us a good idea of whether or not it might have. I have trouble believing it too.

That still doesn't make sense when you consider how much of Xbox sales come from the US and UK. No way is it close to 50/50 with rest of the world.

You think that accounts for another 500K? That seems really high.

You shouldn't underestimate the rest of European markets, sales there aren't as negligible as most people make it out to be. Also, with a conservative 15% digital ratio, 850,000 physical units is enough to put Rise of the Tomb Raider above 1 million mark.

Thing is they are as negligible as most people think for the Xbox one. The vast majority of their sales is in the US and UK. They must have had some kick ass digital sales if they really broke a million.

Well, Rise of the Tomb Raider launch sales in France were 60% of what the game sold in its UK debut, hardly a negligible figure.

Ok, since we've had an update about PS4 WW sales...I just reminded that we don't know yet if One crossed the 2 million mark in UK. Or better: we've yet to read an MCV article on the matter. How can we get an answer on the matter?

So why is GAME still going? And why are digital store cards such big sellers?

Game are hardly going, they're going into administration or on the brink of it every few years, also used games helps.

Digital store cards big sellers where? Amazon.co.uk has none in the top 100 best sellers whereas .com has multiple PSN and XBL $ cards just in the top 10.

I was yesterday in Media Markt in The Netherlands, PS4 was sold out! Media Markt is one of the biggest stores in Germany/Netrherlands.

This what I was saying last month in the main threads for Tomb Raider but people weren't having it. I can totally see TR hitting 1 million with the official bundles in the US and EU plus cheaper price then 20% digital.

While everyone is desperate for doom, you can see the UK was after like 4-5 weeks around 100k, which while low compared to 2013 its really good compared to the US 200k for Nov NPD with 5/6 times more the population and 4 times the install base.

Also everyone seems to forget how fast TR 2013 dropped in price and shifted a ton more units. The last game has shown what a huge ip it is but really only at a discount.
FIFA 16 release on Sept 22nd and sold 300k on PS4 in its first week.
Got the >200k award for PS4 in Germany in September.

I doubt it's really that far off.

Doesn't seem like FIFA sold around 1 million in it's first week though did it? How much do you reckon? 400l 500k, whatever generous estimates we say its far short of what the UK did with less population.

Sold almost 1M. But my bad, that was the PS4 figure for FIFA 15.
FIFA 16 did 420k on PS4 First week. Most likely crossed 500k on the second week.
Also crossed 500k in Germany as of October. No idea when, or how much above that it was. Can't have been super far from 500k in September I reckon.

Greenberg said "well over", not "just over". :D

In the UK? lol no way it's that high..have you seen digital pricing? i'd say it would be around 5% and even that's probably too high.

We'd just show up as US digital purchases. The 20% estimate is a worldwide figure. The US probably see more than 20% due to other countries purchasing from their store... but in turn those countries register less than 20%.

More importantly, how is this "Week 53" being allowed to happen?

Well Wii was a big factor but even bigger is the death of handhelds since those days. DS moved good amount of software during its peak years. And while 3DS has still done decently in other European markets in UK the drop from DS has been absolutely huge. Not a single 3DS title in the charts this week...

You're assuming that Tomb Raider's attache rate in EU is = to the US, which is a false assumption considering how much bigger Tomb Raider is in EU compared to the US.

If a EU market has a 300k XB1 userbase, maybe TR sold 100k in that market, despite 300k being pathetic, the Tomb Raider attache ratio is still very good because the franchise is popular in the region while the US rejects that genre.

I'd be very surprised if the amount of UK digital purchases was over 10%, the digital prices in comparison to physical are just ridiculous, especially in a country where physical games drop quickly in price due to fierce online retailer competition.

UK entertainement top 20 from ERA. No digital for the video games.

era_entertainment_chart_500x350.jpg

Grand Theft Auto V LTD: 6 014 432

I wonder what would be next on the list. Destiny TK I guess?

edit: scratch that, it didn't do so hot. Probably Batman AK then TW3 then MGSV or something.

People care less about the price than you think. Steam's Euro prices are a fucking joke compared to retail PC, but they seem to be doing well anyway.

Ehh PC is skewed though, digital already dominates that market everywhere so it's not really a fair comparison. Digital is only a small % on consoles to begin with, so countries that get fucked over in price will be even smaller. Anyways I've only looked up BO3 and European prices are far more modest than UK. UK gets robbed over double what Europeans do from what I'm seeing.

Spain Amazon BO3 is €48 on PC physical, steam €60 - €12 more
UK amazon for BO3 £36, xbox/psn store £55 - €25 more after euro conversion

Though they can be had for cheaper when bargain hunting I was referring to day 1 prices before any deals when I say the UK gets robbed. I know Europeans get robbed too even on day 1, I think every country does except for America lol.
