A senior minister in the government of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, has died following a violent confrontation with Israeli soldiers in a West Bank village near Ramallah.

Ziad Abu Ain, who deals with the issue of Israeli settlements and the separation wall, died as he was being rushed to hospital after reportedly being pushed and shoved by Israeli troops while planting olive trees in the village of Turmusiya near Ramallah.

Mahmoud Aloul, a participant in the demonstration and a member of Fatah, said that he and Abu Ain had been among several dozen protesters carrying saplings to plant in protest at Israeli land seizures when the demonstrators were assaulted by Israeli troops who fired teargas and beat some of the participants with rifle butts.

A Reuters photographer covering the demonstration, who witnessed the incident, said that the minister died after being “shoved” by Israeli troops.

Chaim Levinson, a correspondent for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz who covers affairs in the occupied Palestinian territories, posted a picture of the minister on Twitter which he said had been taken “after Abu Ain was hit by an IDF soldier”.

A Palestinian witness at the protest told Haaretz that he saw an officer from the border police hit Abu Ein with the butt of his gun and kick him.

Another photograph, published by the Palestinian Maan news website, showed Abu Ain lying on the ground after his collapse.

Confirming the minister’s death, a senior Palestine Liberation Organisation official told the Guardian: “He had gone to plant olive trees in Turmusiya for international human rights day when Israeli soldiers arrived to oppress the demonstration. There are different versions circulating about what happened but he wasn’t shot.”

Abbas said Abu Ain’s death was “barbaric” and “an act that cannot be tolerated or accepted”. “We will take the necessary measures after the results of the investigation into the incident,” he added.

This was a minister for Fatah in the West Bank, the Palestinian party that tries to cooperate with the Israeli government and is mainly seen as a puppet government in return.

So what kind of consequences will this bring?

Thats a poorly worded article. I thought Abbas died for a second, and I almost had a heart attack. Still sucks. In an ideal world, Israel would send that man to prison for the rest of his life and charge the rest of the squadron for shit like that, but we'll see.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Maybe I should have worded it differently. I wasnt talking about internationally. I'm talking about between Palestine and Israel.

But of course everyone is so eager to make the same snarky cynical post.

Nope.

They will "investigate" and give the soldier a slap of the wrist at most.

Is so sad that there are no consequences at all right now...

Israel just invaded Palestina few months ago and there were no consequences WTF. Also the US has been bombing places left and right for like a decade (or more) with the justification of fighting terrorism and no one gives a shit for the innocent lives that are taken in the proccess while the cause of "fighting terrorism" haven't improved nor progressed at all.

The situation worldwide is really tragic but no one gives a shit :(

I wonder what excuse the Israeli government will have for this one. They have intel pointing to Hamas tunnels in his digestive system.

Abbas did die.

Edit: Wait what the fuck?

That really is badly written.

Nothing happen between Israel and Palestine will surprise me. A dirty bomb can go off tomorrow and it wouldn't surprise me.

Abu Ain, 55, has previously been arrested and imprisoned by Israel. He was extradited from the United States in 1981 over the murder of two Israelis in Tiberias in 1979, and sentenced to life in prison, but released in 1985 in a prisoner exchange.

I'm on Palestine's side in this, but I'm also not crying over this guy's death.

There's a pretty good chance that the security cooperation that has been going between Israel and the Palestinian authority in the west bank will end, which will mean a 3rd intifada.
Internationally, nothing will happen.
