A parole board is set to recommend that the disgraced athlete Oscar Pistorius, convicted in the killing of his girlfriend, be released from prison in August, South Africa's Department of Correctional Services told CNN on Monday.

Pistorius, 28, was sentenced in October to five years in prison for culpable homicide in the killing of Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. In South Africa, culpable homicide means a person was killed unintentionally but unlawfully.

Pistorius acknowledged firing shots through the bathroom door in his home, but said he thought there was an intruder in the bathroom rather than his girlfriend.

Under South African law, Pistorius must serve at least one-sixth of his sentence -- 10 months -- before being released. The parole board is prepared to recommend that he be released on August 21, 10 months to the day since his sentencing.

Steenkamp's parents reportedly wrote a letter to the parole board in protest, calling for accountability.

I'm surprised South African law lets you out after only serving 1/6 of your sentence. I wonder what the policy behind that is.

He gets out in 9 days.

Pistorius will leave prison on Friday 21 August, exactly 10 months on from his sentence hearing.

Whether he will remain free, however, is another matter. His case remains subject to a Supreme Court appeal hearing in November, when prosecutors will argue that his conviction should be scaled up to murder – and a minimum 15-year jail term.

He would not be expected to attend the appeal hearing, in which five judges will be asked to decide whether Judge Thokozile Masipa correctly interpreted the law when she found Pistorius not guilty of murder, even though he had fired four times through a locked toilet door into a tiny cubicle which, having heard the door slam shut, he knew was occupied

This is completely absurd.

Thankfully everyone knows who he is and what he did so he won't ever be able to get away from any of it.

Don't particularly care about how long he stayed locked up. More concerned with reparations. First time offender, highly unlikely to reoffend? Yeah, no use keeping him locked up.

Anyway.

Tried to find stats about South African recidivism rates, found out that the government doesn't track the stat.

Also

Rehabilitation and Reintegration

In South Africa, rehabilitation and reintegration services are only available to inmates serving sentences of 24 months or longer.

#bwhahahaha

I wonder if being an Olympian or a celebrity had any bearing on his case?

Because I can't imagine a situation where 10 months is acceptable time for one to serve for culpable homicide.
