i dunno why but on a whim i just decided to search for computers on my network. i'm all hmmmmm...i dont own a powerbook and i dont have more than 2 PCs on right now. why are there 4 PCs on my network? :lol first i just reset my wireless connection to see if they'd jump back on. sure enough they did. twice. :lol needless to say i've added a password to my wireless network and now they cant jump back on...i hope.

Yeah, I've strolled around my neighborhood with my powerbook and couldn't believe all of the unprotected wireless connections. My router is in the basement, and you can't get any kind of signal outside, so I don't even bother.

Two words: MAC filtering.

MAC filters stop any wireless card you don't approve from getting access to your router. I don't know if it stops someone from hacking your network through a wired connection, but with MAC filters, WEP/WPA password and turning SSID broadcasting off, you're pretty good to go. Once my Comcast connection gets fast enough though, I'm turning off the password. AFAIK, WEP encryption reduces your bandwidth. PEACE.

They probably had you as their main wireless network and set to autoconnect. I can connect to a neighbor when the weather is good. I barely get a signal though.

Mac filtering is not 100% foolproof, but it'll stop the casual or hey look here's a free wireless connection folk. WEP reduces your bandwidth but most folks are not going to notice that decrease in performance.

Oh yeah... folks... change your SSID(doesn't matter whether you broadcast it or not, change it... however I'd think before making it something like your name, your cat's name, or something other folks know and can associate with you... and for god's sake... change your damn router's password... I swear some people....
