PC Engine/TG Appreciation and Collecting Thread, Because who needs a 2nd controller?

So my Duo-R came home yesterday. I thought it hadn't been sent yet based off of the tracking number that Keith Courage sent me, but apparently it was glitched. I came home from work and there it was in a box, cold and shivering with the rain outside. <it was under cover, so it wasn't drenched, no worries>. The end result was fantastic :) I am very impressed with his work so far!

Depends on what the prices are. In the loose hu card image, Galaga 88, Son Son 2 and Genpei Toumaden are all worth it. R-Type 2 there as well but only if you've got R-Type 1 as it's literally the second half of the arcade game.

I dunno if it's been discussed but how come the PCE R-Type came on two HuCards sold separately while the US Turbo version came on one card? Better compression techniques?

Nearly all the early pc engine games were released at a maximum of 2megabits or 256k during the early years of the pc engine.

I can only speculate that it is down to cost. If you look at the releases from early 1989 an onwards those pc engine games released on card become bigger in size which I guess is down to those ROM chips being cheaper to produce so those HuCards could have more chips on them.

So when R-type was made for the pc engine it was a 4megabit game which couldn't fit into those 2megabit cards so Hudson had to split it into 2 separate cards for it's Japanese debut. When the Turbografx was released (1989) in the US, Hudson was able to bring the game onto 1 card as those 4megabit or 512k ROM chips were more affordable to house larger sized games. Of course I'm just speculating here!

Notice the black PCB board of the HuCards (right side of the pic) are getting bigger from 1989.

The back of the Street Fighter II' CE PCB, which is a 20megabit hucard.

Was SFIICE the biggest official HuCard on record? And do we know for certain who did the port? I remember GamePro saying Capcom did it, while I'm reading from sites that NEC Avenue handled it (Who are NEC Avenue anyway).

biggest HuCard ? currently yes unless someone releases a homebrew game that surpasses it.

I'm fairly sure up to that point the biggest HuCard was 8megabit or 1megabyte. I think the first was Daimakamura for the supergrafx - 1990, but the pc engine didn't get it's first 8megabit game until Parodius Da! in early 1992. I think other 8megabit games were: Bomberman 94' Fire Pro Wrestling 3, NHK Taiga Drama Taiheiki, PC Genjin 3, Lady Sword.

SFII Champion Edition is developed by Capcom and published by NEC home electronics.

Regarding NEC Avenue:

NEC Avenue, Ltd. was a Japanese media company, and a division of NEC Corporation established in 1987. The company produced music and video releases, as well as game software for NEC's PC Engine and PC-FX console systems. In 1995, the software division was spun off into NEC Interchannel, Ltd. NEC Avenue's music publishing operations ceased by 1998, and the company has gone through multiple name changes since, now being known as T.Y. Entertainment Inc.
Defunct since 1998.

NEC avenue were imo mostly known for their arcade to pc engine ports of SEGA/CAPCOM and Taito games also produced some game hardware.

NEC avenue produced the 6 button controller: Avenue pad 6

I also have this PC Genjin Mook.

With that said, it's pretty lightweight and not in great condition, but nice to own as a fan.

Dug out my turbo I found at a garage sale for $15 5 years ago. I forgot how fun Alien crush and Blazing lazers were.

Im looking to collect more, but the us market now Is bananas. Can anyone recommend a relatively simple/easy mod for this thing to run pc engine games?

Huh, didnt know they had an everdrive for turbo. I play it pretty casually compared to snes and genesis so maybe thats the best route.

Question for those with a Supergrafx - I already have a PC Engine Duo R and I'm looking to get a Supergrafx to play Ghouls n Ghosts and 1941. I've found one at an ok price but it doesn't have any cables - can I use my (6 button) pad, power supply and AV cables from my Duo R on the Supergrafx, or are there any notable differences between them?

Also, does anyone know where I can find 1941? I'm eyeing one on eBay but its fairly expensive and is missing the front sleeve that the game comes in, so I'd rather get a complete version if possible.

I done made a little retrospective on Gain Ground SX, which is PROBABLY my favorite PCE CD game. The music is too good! Shame it never made it out of Japan.

found a copy awaiting me this evening after work. Had a quick play through but at the moment I'm more occupied with getting a pi3 up and running.

Im kinda debating on saving up for a 3D printer and making a pi3 casing based off a hucard.... But I hear the learning curve for a 3D printer is steep.. I'd also love to create some models of pc engine characters and have them 3d printed.

I think this is a pic of the supergrafx power supply

Yeah, Gain Ground is a great game, and it's definitely under-rated. But the PCE CD version, best? No, it's only the graphics that are best; between the sadly absent multiplayer and the zoomed-in gameplay, the Genesis version plays better. The zoomed-in graphics make the game harder, as it was originally designed for you to be able to see each stage all at once, and you can't do that on the PCE. It is a problem sometimes. So yeah, Gain Ground SX looks and sounds better than Genesis Gain Ground, but the Genesis version has better gameplay. It is a really fun game though, yeah, so I agree with most of your review.

OK!

Got some more misc PC Genjin Merch.

First up a great A5 sized mini-guide pamplet for PC Genjin 2, which possibly was given away with something back in the day.

There is a cut out section on the back page so you can make your own PC G Diorama, which obvo I am not going to do. In addition there are various nice general maps of each level and lots of interesting things (even for someone who can't speak Japanese).

It's a bit thin, although it does have a fair amount of pages, and I think it is better than the softback book guide for PC G1.

Given the size and format, I think I will be able to scan it fairly easly and well. I am also minded to replace the staples if I can find others of the sames size as they are a little rusty.

Next up is a strange ... bag of some sort. Well it looks like a nice plastic bag, albeit without the handles. Thing is that (and you can't really make it out from the photos, but it's really, really thick and has a rubbery texture, a bit like the sort of material you would make something that goes in the water. I've seen a couple of things sold in Japan made out of a similar material, again they were heavy duty bags given out with those Bathing Ape fashion magazines. It measures about 2' by 2'.

Anyway, I saw this on Yahoo JP for like a few squids, so I got it with a view to somehow doing some high density scans and perhaps using it as T-Shirt art or something. If I had more than one I might be tempted to cut our the art to help with this, or frame it or something.

Just came back from a trip to Japan and picked up a Core Grafx 2 and Super CD ROM2 for a friend. Have them a spin (with an audio CD since I don't have any games myself yet - hoping to pick up a Duo later), and noticed the CD did skip in places.

Could this just be a dirty lens? Or something else that is hopefully fixable? Worried the unit took a bump on the way home. It was advertised as "like-new" on he box at Super Potato but I'd probably disagree with that assessment, although it looks good.

Your lens might need adjusting. Though unless you're good with an oscilloscope I would recommend sending it out to be worked on. I would recommend KeithCourage on the PCengineFX boards (or on facebook you can find him by searching for that name I believe).

He knows these systems really well and does amazing work. It'll probably be a pretty inexpensive fix, though he gets A LOT of systems and usually has a bunch in line to be worked on so it may take a little bit.

so i made these back in 2011 and i have no clue what to do with them and instead of letting them die in my dropbox i thought.. why not upload them here

Ok, I took the plunge and grabbed a Supergrafx to play the couple of Capcom titles exclusive to the platform, but I'm having problems with my copy of Daimakaimura :(

The console also came with another Supergrafx game Battleace. I've hooked the console up to my CRT TV and firstly tried Battleace. Worked fine. Next I took my copy of Daimakaimura (which was brand new and sealed) and opened it up. Plugged the game in and all I get is a blank white screen. I've looked around a bit online and made sure the Supergrafx was set to "Mode 1" which as I understand is the required mode for Supergrafx games (either way, neither mode 1 nor mode 2 allowed the game to boot up). I also tried a couple of standard PC Engine games and those work fine. So at the moment I don't think its the console, as every other game seems to work and including another Supergrafx game. So at this stage I think its probably Daimakaimura, which is strange as the game is completely spotless, I'm quite stumped as to why it doesn't work.

Any recommendations? If it weren't so expensive to get ahold of another copy of Daimakaimura I'd grab another copy and test that, since at this point I'm thinking it has to be the game since everything else seems ok. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

clean the contacts.

clean the contacts.

I've cleaned the contacts of the Hu Card with rubbing alcohol and that didn't help. I've not been able to clean the contacts of the actual console since I'd have to take the console apart to reach the slot, however as every other card I tried works I think its an issue with the game. I've also been suggested to try using Deoxit on the contacts, so hopefully that'll help.
