PC Gamer - Microsoft's year of shame

Can't make a few trillion dollars without ditching game developers, going googoo gaga for AI and supplying tech to the military, I suppose!
Microsoft's leadership will no doubt point to the stock price as proof 2025 was a great year for the company. Call me crazy, but I feel like profiting while laying off talent, making your products materially worse, and firing your own employees for protesting your morally bankrupt deals with a bloodthirsty military is a bad look, actually! But get that bag I guess.
Xbox closes studios, cancels games and lays off thousands as Phil Spencer says the "platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger"
Ending Windows 10 support with no upgrade path for hundreds of millions of PCs
Fucking jamming fucking AI in everything, fuck
Diversity priorities? Eh, who needs those
The Xbox Series X can no longer even feign being competitive
Game Pass proves unsustainable despite Microsoft plowing $75 billion into Activision
"This is an Xbox" ad campaign's attempted rebrand just highlights the brand's irrelevance
Windows gaming handhelds perform worse than Linux ones
Two years into Microsoft's ownership of Activision Blizzard, Call of Duty sells so badly they can't even come up with any positive metrics for it
Supplying tech to the Israeli military throughout its commitment of atrocity after atrocity in Palestine
My expectations for Microsoft in 2026 are low. I expect it to lay off more game developers and cancel more games as it tries to pump AI bubble profits out of entertainment. I expect Windows to continue down the path of agentic AI, even as the experience proves poor for the humans on the other side of the screen. I expect it to keep making its icons worse, for some damn reason.

It's a lengthy article but...when you put it like this...

Might mean more coming from an outlet other than PC gamer, but still.....they ain't wrong.

Edit: Eh.....I'm not talking about their takes on Palestine or other politics. This is why I now despise this once great outlet. Can't stay in their damn lane.

Xbox got too big. The eye of sauron doesn't want it to effect the sock price. How many AI data centers could they have made with 75 billion?

At this point GAF has its own version of Godwin's Law: the longer this forum exists, the probability that someone shits on Microsoft or Xbox asymptotically approaches 1 and effectively stays there. GAF needs to add this to the forum header "Days since someone shat on Microsoft or Xbox: 0".

All these game media sites collectively stroked his shaft, fondled his balls, and then grinned in front of cameras telling us how gamepass was great for the industry actually while we watched his baby gravy slowly dribble down the sides of their mouths in realtime. The man evoked used car salesman misdirection and sales pitches from day one, and unsurprisingly the weak-minded (or the cash-strapped) parroted the corporate messaging. The problem with incompetence is that eventually, the excuses wear thin and you have to produce because results are the only thing that matters.

Phil Spencer's mismanagement of the brand eclipses Don Mattrick's own incompetence, and that's saying something. Phil Spencer absolutely deserves the industry icon award he was given a few days ago, he is definitely legendary for his singlehandedly destroying the last remaining thing Microsoft had that was worth a damn.

And it'll get a heck of a lot worse before they course correct. They're dangerously close to falling afoul of the sunk cost fallacy on AI. While OpenAI rakes in cash, hand over fist, from every major player on planet Earth, Microsoft is systematically destroying it's core businesses trying to beat everyone to market. "See - AI works! Buy now!". Meanwhile, Xbox is charcoal, Windows is ablaze, and Azure is starting to smoke.

We haven't had the release of their first game with a majority AI-driven development process yet. That'll be an absolute mess unlike anything we've ever seen before, and I suspect it's already in the works. And Nadella will force that pipeline onto Xbox as a whole, whether it actually works or not, so he can fire even more developers. Why? Because Nadella knows if his USD$100 billion (and counting) bet on AI doesn't pay off with literally trillions in revenue, he's cooked. That's a "Steve Balmer laughs at iPhone" level of whiffing and Microsoft's shareholders will want blood.

Can't wait to see what fresh horrors they have in store for 2026.

PC Gamer was peak shitter reading material back before Doom 3 and Half Life 2 launched. After 2004, if PC Gamer was in the bathroom it was to wipe my ass.

Also, some of these outlets' strange aversion to working on military projects considering the state of the world is plain fucking weird.

The West is in Great Power competition game with China, there might be a shooting war in Taiwan straights, there is a big war in Europe with Russia, Middle East is a cluster as always.

It would be insane NOT to work with Western militaries.

That said, MS still sucks.
