PC Games

Blackace

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Ok just got a new PC, I have killed KoTOR II and Pirates! is doing me good. Freedom force is fun but I can't sit down with it for more than like an hour at a time before I want to kill the voice actors...

Anyways been thinking about empire earth II... but any RPGs, turn base srat games.. or just good games that people can suggest would be great! I am not a big fan of FPS games but a rare few make me happy (deus ex) so fill my thread with your PC love

EDIT: sorry I didn't say this before but I have only taken a year and a half gap from gaming pleassssseeee don't say games that are 3 or 4 years old I have already been there and done that... :D

Well, I'll start off with the requisite Planescape: Torment recommendation. :)

Also, I'd say take a look at Rome: Total War (RTS), Morrowind (the bundle with the expansions is so cheap now), and UT2K4 (even though it's an FPS, it's a nice little pick up and play game and quite versatile if I do say so myself).

It's quite funny, I spend more time playing PC games nowadays versus consoles.. something I never really understood when I was younger i.e. seeing all these older guys playing PC games quite a lot. I was never a huge RTS nor FPS fan but here I am playing the select few that make me happy.

For me I think it's the fact that I spend a lot more time working at a computer, as opposed to when I was younger. At this point, I'll usually just fire up a PC game instead of dragging myself to my consoles if I want to take a break from the work I'm doing.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (if you don't already have it on a console)

I know these are really old, but they are favorites of mine

Thief
System Shock 2 (you could pair SS2 with this, and there is a way to install/run it on XP I believe too)

Fallout 1 & 2. Oldies, but goodies.

I can vouch for this. I only just played both Fallout games two months ago. I beat them both and they were pretty damn good. The games have really good atmosphere for some reason. O_o

I've also picked up Brotherhood of Steel but I haven't touched it yet ever since I discovered Everquest 2. :D

If you haven't played them, play the Baldur's Gate series. Baldur's Gate 3 is in the works. I bet if you started a new game of Baldur's Gate today, by the time you make it through the first and second game plus the expansions, BG3 will already be on store shelves(and BG3 is still currently in it's planning stages!).

Sorry I should make myself clear here... I have only been out of the PC gaming loop for about a year and half or so... (when I moved to Japan) and am a hardcore PC gamer (or was at least) so anything over 2 or 3 years old I have played...

I have always been into PC gaming since my beloved C-64!

But thanks for the replies.. I just want to know what I missed in that gap

Planescape Torment or Baldur's Gate 2. :D

Thanks... but I have already done those... I know I didn't say that in my first post... but I just said it... one post above.. :lol

System Shock 2 was already mentioned, excellent game.

RPGS: Baldur's gate series, Icewind Dale series, Planescape (of course). NWN if you want some great multiplayer.

Try and get a copy of Clive Barkers Undying if you can, that was a great game... never really got the attention it deserved.

I know your not an FPS fan, but Far Cry deserves a look, and can be picked up on the cheap.

And Dr Cogent is going to hate this, but check out Morrowind if you didn't look at it on Xbox. I LOVED that game. But if you do get it, seriously think about getting the strategy guide for it. It fills in a TON of information about the gods, great houses, natives, the empire, EVERYTHING.... its stuff thatÂ’s in the game, but only if you are the type of person who likes to pick up every book in the game world and read it. The characters don't really talk about the plot; you are supposed to read it for yourself. The strategy guide literally turns the game from "Does this thing have a plot?" do "Wow, this is a great story!!". :D

Silent Storm

Imagine Jagged Alliance in beautiful 3D with Havok physics, fully destructible environments and bump-mapping.
Best TB strategy EVER. (even better than the old UFO games)

Arx Fatalis

Basically an Ultima Underworld 3. If you loved the previous Underworlds you'll love Arx. Oh - it's 3D and bumpmapped :)

silent storm sounds hot!

If you liked Deus Ex you will probably like Vampires: the Masquerade- Bloodlines. Its alot like Deus Ex except its with Vampires set in modern day instead of futuristic aliens and robots, and there is a more focus on Melee combat, although taking up a Desert Eagle or Auto Shotgun and going all ranged is viable. There is also an element of different types of magic. Awesome story, good graphics, good rpg and character customization elements, and probably some of the better voice acting seen in recent games. The only problems are that combat is somewhat clunky, but its not terrible and the other amazing parts of the game more then make up for it.

ALso if you want a Turn-based Strategy RPG, add another vote for Silent Storm. Its amazing. The destructable environments are really what make that game so great.

Lots of FPSes. Some great (Far Cry), some good (Chaser) and tons of crap (everything else), frankly too many to list.

Deus Ex is still the best PC RPG ever created (closely followed by Ultima 7 and Fallouts).
Thief 2 is still the best "sneaker" ever made.
Quake 3 is still the best ultra-fast shooter ever made (UT2K4 is more team oriented).

For a serious FPS get SWAT 4, it's a real killer.

RPGs... Sacred was a pretty neat Diablo 2.5, Divine Divinity was a great Ultima 7.5...
oh, get Gothic 2 - amazing RPG that easily surpasses Morrowind (IMO).

RTS games, quite a choice. Rome: TW, Empire Earth II, Age of Mythology, C&C: Generals, Warcraft 3 (!).

Adventure games, listing only the best: The Longest Journey, Syberia I & II, Myst IV, Moment of Silence.

TPP games - Max Payne 2. Best story in an action game ever. Heavy, noir, tragic. Havok 2.0 physics rules.

If we're only talking about the last year or two, then I enjoyed:

Psychonauts
Rome: Total War
Kohan II: Kings of War - Nothing tops Ahriman's Gift, but this was fun.
Gothic II
Thief III
Max Payne II - Best action FPS in recent memory.

Whups, I can't believe I forgot to mention Arx Fatalis! Another great game. I've heard great things about Gothic, but I have never tried it thats why I didnt reccomend it.

And Undying isn't crap, it kicks ass! One of those rare "scary" games thats actually scary.

Myth: Soulblighter is awesome.

Myth: The Fallen Lords is better but unless your system can do Glide, it looks crappy.

I still play warcraft 3 online. Fun, cheap to buy, and no online fees.

Thanks keep em coming! Can't seem to find Gothic II... but I will keep looking.. I can only buy from one place online in Japan... but it rocks! any more great games???

Get Rise of Nations so we can play :), and then there's the rest of that stuff the other people mentioned.

Rome: Total War is a great game too.

Take the leap. Falcon 4.0

Also - new version to be released June 28.

THE most realistic combat flight sim available to civilians.

Warcraft 3 reminds of why RTS games are so unappreciated in terms of what the genre offers. Even after beating the regular Single Player modes you can usually fire up multiplayer and have lots of options as to what to do. Bought the warchest and only been playing DOTA (Defense of the Ancients) and mauls for the past few months. Same could be said for FPS games with different types of modes and huge selection of maps you can be playing most for several years and never get bored with them.

I drag myself to my consoles so that I *can* take a break from the PC.

Even though my PC is a good spec, and hell - I even develop PC games, I can't remember the last PC game I got really into. Every time I try (a FPS or whatever else) I get bored pretty quickly and go back to my consoles within a few days. I'd *like* to break this spell, but I feel shut out from PC titles.

My picks, (some obviuos, some not):

Operation Flashpoint (big mod community)

Giants: Citizen Kabuto (an awesome game which was ported to the PS2, but everything I've read said the port was fair) The PC version is the one to have.

Age of Mythology

Rise of Nations- hehe, you can nuke shit. :)

Warhammer 40K

Age of Empires

shpankey has it right. Myth Soulblighter and The Fallen Lords were awesome games. Both were some of Bungie's best IMO. You'll probably have to find it on Ebay though. :(

If you like racers, then Nascar Racing 2003, MotoGP 2, and GTR (which I haven't played, but i hear is great). I've also heard that Richard Burns Rally is awesome, but I don't think they've released it in the states. If you didn't play it on the console, then Colin McRae Rally 04' is an awesome game as well.

I'm a big FPS'er, so I won't mention the obvious ones like UT2K4, Doom3, HL2, and RTCW, Aliens vs. Predator 2 (spooky-ass game), and Serious Sam 1 and 2, wink-wink, nudge-nudge. ;P :)

I did play Psychonauts the other day which I really enjoyed, so I'll pick that up on the xbox.

If there are any good PC game demos that people recommend, that aren't revolving around war, soldiers or racing, then I'd be keen to try some out.

Don't forget Grand Prix Legends Hokie. :) Sure... it's not nearly as advanced as Nascar 2003 Season, but something about 700 hp with skinny tires and no downforce make GPL an experience worth having! :D

Oh yeah, and... Myth F0r3veR! Bungie's greatest game. Hell, the greatest game of alltime imho. ;)

Im pretty disgusted that no one even so much as mentioned any adventure games.

Grim Fandango
The longest Journey
Syberia
Gabriel Knight 3

Grim Fandango was a good Schafer game :)

I loved Descent II, but that game is hella old. Dunno if Black Ace would be interested in it, if it even runs under XP or if you can even find it anywhere.

The Mechwarrior 2 games were ubersweet as well.

You know, I went back and played Mech Warrior 4 Mercenaries not long ago. The graphics are bit dated now, but it's a very cool game.

It is. Check the GameSpot review here (8.2) and some screenies here.

Oh, it's a WWII game.

Mostly. Don't mind the lazerzzzz and some mechzzzz at the end :lol

With all this talk of Silent Storm, it's just getting me more psyched for Hammer and Sickle. :D

Got me on your ignore list, eh?

.... world of warcraft? ;)

TURN TO THE DARK SIDE!

i've got a few games that, um, i've not tried yet that you might want to swing by and try

Trackmania Sunrise, just got it today and loving it. {erfect challenge and some absolutley wacked out tracks, highly recommended.
Get a good controller though, i reccomend a Xbox controller s with a magic joy box adapter (can plug ps2 and gc in as well).

A little help from the gurus here. How can I get Grim Fandango to install under WinXP? I put the CD in, it loads the setup menu, I click install and it just freezes the computer.

Help, please!!

Don't play WoW. It's fun for a little while but then when you realize that it's pointless, and you look back at the $100+ and several hundred hours you spent on it...just don't do it.

Warcraft 3 is all about fun and no commitment/fees.
