So my buddy crashed his comp. and somehow lost alot of his data....

His wife won't talk to him because he lost her banking data...

He is running Win XP Home and he says System Restore wont recover the data...

What should I do to help him?

worked quite well for me a few weeks back.

the only problem is that you need to register to actually recover the files, which costs around $80. that is, if you want to do things legally.

What was the nature of the data loss? Failed HD? Failing HD?

Either way... File Scavenger XP.

40 bucks. Recovered all my sh!t (~200GB).
