Power supply died on a PC of mine so i decided it best to just start from scratch and swap some parts around from other PCs like a bigger hard drive and better graphics card. Irs been ages since i've done this so the damn thing keeps freezing up when i'm trying to load XP.

I reset the motherboard and tried booting winXP to a formatted hard drive. It kept freezing on "kernel debugger.dll" :( ok so that wasnt working so i dig out an old win98 cd. reformatted again, set partitions and then tried to load win98. freezes while "loading win98 files to system" :( WTF!!! so i try to load XP again and while its loading the os it freezes at the kernel debugger dll again.

whats wrong? is there a bad cable somewhere possibly? am i not formatting the drive right? I even tried a different harddrive and get the same freezes with both 98 and XP. :( help please. :)

One of the first things I suspect is the memory itself; or a memory incompatibility with your mainboard. Have you tried going into the BIOS and declocking the memory to fail-safe settings? If not that, then just dethrottle your memory timings to say PC100 or PC133 speed.

Aside from that, I'd suspect the power supply. Even if it worked in your other machine, it may be underpowered for your current CPU/mainboard/memory combo.

Give us some more specifics like:

mainboard
CPU
memory speed (PC2100, 3200, etc...)
video card
