You may grow to understand why pCARS is a love/hate proposition for many of us 8)

For Assetto, make sure the in game screen resolution matches your monitor resolution. A quarter of the screen reads like its set to 600x800. No auto detect in AC from memory.

I think the problem is I've got a 4K TV mounted to my cockpit, but I've got AC set to output 1080p (for performance reasons). For some reason the TV isn't upscaling the image to fill the screen.

All in all it was a pretty frustrating first day. Lots to learn (like why the menus in AC are so tiny and why the image only occupies 1/4 of my screen when I start driving). I suppose I invited this vampire in so I better stock up on crucifixes.
Take a look at the Assetto Corsa's config ini files from your documents folder "%documents%\Assetto Corsa\cfg\..." (especially "launcher.ini" and "video.ini")

What I would be doing though:
Not play the same games on PC, that I already play on console and get Automobilista + Season Pass ASAP!!
It's the best FFB and car handling out there in my opinion, at least over all content, ...rF2 has a few really great ones too, but the differences in quality between cars are a bit jarring, and of course Assetto Corsa feels really good if I imagine the car to have consumer-grade power steering.

...or play RaceRoom and turn up the volume while the neighbors are at work ;)

right click on desktop, nVidia Control Panel --> "Desktop Size & Position" --> "Full Screen" and also check the checkbox to override game-internal scaling.

Will do, many thanks!

Part of the reason to move to PC was to get rock-solid 60fps in games I was already enjoying (like AC and pCARS), and the PS Pro will probably be relocated downstairs for couch gaming so I won't be playing those games any more on console.

Turns out I already had RaceRoom in my Steam library from a few years ago so that's currently downloading at a snail's pace. I'm looking forward to playing it with decent settings.

Yea, during Summer and Winter Sale, Steam speeds are down to PSN standards ;D
In a few days it'll be back to whatever speed is possible on your end, as long as you don't have a gigabit connection.

It was fluctuating between 100 kb/s and 4 mb/s yesterday, not helped by my own fluctuating internet speed which seemed to drop to 10% of its normal sped whenever the new PC was turned on (then shooting back up when the PC was turned off). Very weird. I have to connect via WiFi too as there's no easy way to get an ethernet cable up there from the router, and the signal is pretty weak, surprisingly weak as the router is in the room directly below through a wooden floor. I think the wireless card in the PC might just be piss poor. I changed WiFi channels and that helped a little, but even using a repeater didn't seem to help. Maybe I'll try powerline adapters next, but I've had interference using them in the past.

Agree on AMS; it's an amazing SIM and the FFB is sublime. I think version 1.5 will be it for AMS before the next summer is worked on. If @Mascot doesn't buy it during the steam sale, he is mad!

rF2 is getting better with each release; Studio 397 have done an amazing job to this point and it's only going to get better.

I say buy as many sims as you can afford and work out what suits you and the CSR the best 8)

But that wouldn't affect a reading from speedtest.net on my phone, would it? I was getting 40MB down, turn the PC on it and it drops to around 5MB, turn the PC off again and it jumps back up to 40MB.

How easy do you find it transitioning between so many sims? Do you tend to stick with one for a while or hop between them willy-nilly?

As I beta test R3E I tend to play that the most. I feel more at home with isimotor based Sims although R3E is 80% SimBin/Sector 3 code nowadays.

AMS and rF2 would tie for second most seat time and AC would be third as the lack of tracks are killing it for me as I've owned AC since the early access days. Unlike many people here, i find mods are 95% shite and the 5% worth downloading are usually paid for mods or scratch made tracks.

I gave up on pCARS for anything apart from hot lapping which is a shame as I finished Shift and Unleashed back in the day. Plus I took an age to get the FFB dialled in!

The feel between the three I play most is similar enough; R3E has great FFB and physics however the latest tyre model doesn't replicate sliding very well and is being worked on. The transition from grip to sliding is very abrupt and can be hard to catch unlike what you see IRL and what the real drivers tell the developers team.

AMS is the best all round aim. I don't believe there is a dud car and although it looks dated, the graph are good enough once a race starts. The Porsche was the best until recently when another similar got Porsche too. The physics and tyre models are believable even without ever driving the real thing and I've never had a WTF moments in AMS where the car spat me off the road.

rF2 used to be king of what might have been but not anymore. Studio 397 are slowly bringing rF2 potential to light. Some cars are average to drive as they feel unfinished but there are cars like the USF2000 that are amazing. There is a lot to do however if it all comes together, rF2 will be the replacement for rFactor we once hoped for.

A long winded answer for a short question!

Thanks!

OK, first question (of many, no doubt):

Why the hell does Project CARS think my clutch is the accelerator when calibrating the pedals (CSPs)? I selected the Fanatec CSR Elite wheel profile.

Pedal mapping is fine in Assetto Corsa (apart from having to tick a box in the setup so that pedals are not fully depressed without them being touched, and actually decrease input the harder you press them).

Also, it was pretty horrible being faced with a clean slate in Project CARS. I'd forgotten what a lengthy ball-ache it initially is getting FFB set up and cars tuned. I guess being PC I can import some profiles from somewhere?

All in all it was a pretty frustrating first day. Lots to learn (like why the menus in AC are so tiny and why the image only occupies 1/4 of my screen when I start driving). I suppose I invited this vampire in so I better stock up on crucifixes.
There's the JackSpade profiles. They get quite a bit of love. Welcome aboard.

At the moment you can sign up for 12 months of iracing for £23 via steam.

Which is a complete bargain just to race the Mazda Mx5 with real people every hour every day.

managed to get R3E up and running on low settings only to find myself getting a bit motion sick. It felt like the framerate was too low and the steering wheel movements didn't appear to match my own. I had it on the lowest settings also. A few questions:

- Is there an ingame fps counter? Not sure how to benchmark whether my system can handle it or not without it
- I'm running a 1070, i5 4560 and 16GB Ram. Is this sufficient?
- Any basic graphic settings I can adjust to improve performance?

Cheers

Are you kidding? This is more than enough to run R3E with pretty much the best it can offer.

That sounds downright wrong. You can use Steam's own FPS counter (accessible through Steam Preferences). Just make sure you activate it before launching the game.

But anything below 60fps at max settings is wrong. Do your performance problems only happen with this game?

I can seemingly run RaceRoom at a solid 4k/60 (everything maxed) with this 980Ti. I was not expecting that!

Is the current 33% off as good as it gets? I'm in no particular rush.

Edit: no season pass I guess - what packs are recommended?

Have a read of this: https://forum.sector3studios.com/index.php?threads/openvr-support.7109/

"VR is heavily bottlenecked by the CPU at the moment so if you have a high end card like a 1080, you're likely to have issues with performance unless you turn down the number of cars displayed along with shadows and some other options"

Found this in that thread:

- DO NOT use Asynchronous Reprojection if your using Oculus Rift that will fuck up the game it becomes very choppy
- If your using the Oculus Tool and rescale from there the game becomes very blurry but runs better so use the Steam way to make it look better

Can anyone explain what this means?

Btw thank you to everyone who has provided advice thus far I really appreciate it.
In other news I bought a TH8A and T3PA combo for my T300RS. Looking forward to getting back into racing :)

They have had sales in the past that give you everything at a bigger discount. I know I got mine a year or two back where they included all the tracks and cars for something like $50. The discount for that would've been 60%+.

You can test each car, so if you don't want to buy everything, maybe try the cars you think you'll like. In my experience, I really like the ADAC series, Group 5, and the classic touring cars. In terms of tracks, the Nordschleife is a must have. I also enjoy Infineon and the Red Bull Ring.

Just tried the Next Car Game - Wreckfest update (7.3GB).

It has a new UI, no repais and crew, new FFB... big changes. It's still complete garbage. Rotational inertia of the cars is too hard, everything else is too easy physics-wise. Still no need to clutch when driving with an H-pattern shifter.
I started an elimination race, game went into a 2 lap Banger race and at no point did I feel that the AI even knew I was on the track. Also the AI still doesn't have different difficulties (or was that "A"-class, "B"-class? No that's for different car performance, right? I don't remember, only ever played the game for 3 hours in 2 years).

Anyway... no real need to try it again, if you didn't like it before.

Assetto Corsa is also a solid 4k60 with a judicious mix of med-high-max settings. I'm impressed!

Project Cars is a very different beast. I have to drop it down to 1080p to get a solid 60fps with settings that don't look that different to the PS4 Pro. I guess there's a lot more going on under the hood with the dynamic weather and lighting, but I'm slightly disappointed that I can't get it looking a lot better. I've been spoilt now. Sub-4k is hard to go back to..! :p

Nah, that SMS engine always had terrible performances. It was the same with NFS Shift 1 and 2 and Test Drive Ferrari, even without the dynamic weather and TOD thing used to run like ass.

Try reflections on high and higher distance and do over 20 opponents... those shaders still can destroy any gpu, it also scales badly with more opponents on the grid, those need CPU power too.

About your other question:
I switch between rFactor 2, Automobilista and Assetto Corsa, mix in a bit RaceRoom, DiRT Rally and now DiRT 4. If I had a button box, I might play Euro and American Truck Simulator too, but I feel like I just don't have enough buttons on my wheel to play it the way I want to play those two.

iRacing deserves a chance, I know, but I'm a bit on a budget and racing at certain hours, practicing the tracks before, I think it would feel like work for me. Never been much of an online player/racer anyway.

The one sim I'm always in the mood of playing is Automobilista ever since I learned I can turn up the FFB on a per car basis in the RealFeelPlugin.ini (" MaxForceAtSteeringRack= " closer to zero -->stronger FFB) and also give it more road feel with less FFB-smoothing there. Hard to believe that this amazing game is a mod for an over 10 year old sim at the bottom of the engine.

Project CARS I basically only start if I found a new FFB tweak or want to try a car track combo that I don't have in another game. 2 out 3 sessions end in me saying "I should not play this game again" (to be fair, it's been not much different with Forza for me in the last year and I'm not even going to buy GT Sport, even though I've platinumed GT6 and am in the GTS Beta [fake edit: Also not buying Forza without better FFB and FoV options on PC].

I must say I'm not overly impressed with my TH8A and T3PA's. I'll start with the shifter. Only tried H pattern so far with iRacing, but I'm either missing shifts or floating around neutral to find the right gear. It seems a bit too loose, but tightening the nut just seemed to make it harder to shift and not snap it into gear. Also shift throw is too long. Haven't tried seq yet
With the pedals, I feel like the brake pedal placement is off. I dunno, it just doesn't feel like the natural position. To be fair I am using a wheel stand with a bar which might be the cause of my issues. Pedal feel is good though.

I did pCARS a bit of a disservice in my previous post, I think. Ultra reflections were killing the frame rate (originally set by Geforce Experience - is this thing actually ever useful?), so once I toned those down I could up the resolution to around 1.5k and bump up a few of the other settings to Ultra and get a good 60fps, even with 20 opponents in a thunderstorm at night. Starting at the back of the grid at Monza with these parameters shows a dip down to around 55fps for the first few seconds but by the time the field reaches the first chicane at the end of the start/finish straight (a notorious stress-test on PS4) it's back to a solid 60fps, and stayed there for the rest of the race. I've very happy with that.

Default FFB settings (and feel) and overall car set-up seem a lot better than the 'out of the box' experience I remember on the PS4 too. I think I'll be OK playing this with defaults until pCARS 2 arrives.

I don't think there's a way to pay on Steam for the same iracing account as you have on the browser either.

This is precisely the reason I sold mine and upgraded to a Fanatec CSS 1.5. The TH8A is horribly overrated and feels like a toy. If I'm honest, the CSS isn't *that* much better, but then again I'm a stickler for top of the line heavy duty and industrial built hardware. Still waiting for the new H-pattern from Quaife.

So, this deal... If I don't currently have my iracing account linked to steam, can I grab it and apply it to my account (assuming it's a code you get)?
Or is it a case of new users only?

New users only from what I read. No way to apply to existing accounts :(

My sub has just expired and I'm tempted to buy as I've purchased no content and could just start another account.

Yeah I was thinking about trading up. In all honesty I'm not sure I actually want a good H pattern, a solid sequential shifter is probably what I'm after. How do they compare in seq?

Are there any genuinely excellent track mods for Assetto Corsa? If so, which ones please?

Ditto cars.

These are all very well made (or, uh, ripped) IMO:

Bathurst is my favourite of the lot, it feels great. There's a good Le Mans out there as well, aaand a really terrible Isle of Man circuit that would've been awesome if you didn't clip through half the walls and find yourself stuck in race car purgatory every 3 corners. :(

I don't have download links atm but I've also tried:

Donington Park
Istanbul
Macau
Magny-Cours
Paul Ricard
Road America

And from what I can remember, they're all totally ~fine~, if a little rough-edged, with the exception being Istanbul which was kinda fucked.

As for car mods, Formula Hybrid is the best open wheel mod you're gonna get imo if you're into that. Other than that, it's kinda just a crapshoot. Although you should absolutely get an NSX in your car collection, 'cuz it's the best car ever made and all.

Just try a bunch of stuff out is all I can say. You can find a lot on the site I've linked to or on RaceDepartment or whatever.

Obviously there are gonna be multiple versions of tracks by different people in which case I'd usually try to find the one most highly downloaded/voted, etc.

In terms of Quality, I think these here really stand out:
- Virginia International Raceway (I feel guilty not having donated these guys a beer at least)
- Paul Ricard (even comes with graphic filters to get the color right)
- Luccaring (super high textures)
- Riverside

Some of these have that "converted" feel to them, but they're still must-haves for me:
- Bridgehampton
- Mills Metro Park
- Suzuka
- Interlagos
- Modena
- Donington Park
- Blackwood
- Hungaroring
- Snetterton (2011)
- Bathurst (<-- I think this one was accused to have been converted from rFactor 2 without permission)

And this is my favorite hill-climb mod (short, but good... not a stunner from the looks, but try it):
- Krajiska (Zmija)

And yes, like kiyomi mentioned, best to only check stuff on Racedepartment, they really take stuff down if it was converted illegally or without permission.

Thank you all very much, I'll be sure to follow those up. I just remembered I have a whole bunch of track and car mods downloaded from when I installed AC Early Access on my laptop several years ago (or maybe they were for GTR? I forget).

One last Q: is there not a full Season Pass on PC like there is on console? Is it just the Porsche season pass on PC?

Edit: and another: I'm also curious to know if AI can be used with track mods.

It has to be implemented by the track author, so some do, some don't. Some that do are bad, some that do are good. Again, another crapshoot, sadly. Most of them will list whether or not they support AI in their descriptions.

I should really reinstall, lol.

You know what I don't like about him?
He used to be a normal guy, talking normal stuff and it feels like some day he found out that forced positive attitude (yes, sadly, I have that term from PewDiePie) + a little crazyness gets way more views. I might be completely wrong, I've been wrong about other youtubers in the past, but that's how I feel at the moment (edit: and I used to be a subscriber and watched quite a few of his vids).

If anyone in this thread is interested in reviewing or writing articles about racing games and live in the British Isles (or PAL territory), please PM me. A well known & respected independent YT gaming channel is looking for articulate people interested in the racing genre to write about & review games.

It'll be a love job but you will get game access and inside info on all manner of games, most of which will be racing titles.

I used to do this and loved it but time is short nowadays and good reliable people are rare however I urge people to PM me if they are interested.

Cheers!
