Anyone here ever been in the peace corps? If so, what'd you do, how was it? I'm thinking about joining after university.

It's not a bad gig if you're thinking about going to graduate school after undergrad. However, if you expect to get a job after you're out of the Peace Corps, you're sorely mistaken.

I looked in to the Peace Corps as an option after graduating from university. (I received three B.A.s with Honors, just to give you some context.) I spoke with friends with various companies/firms and asked them what they thought of applicants who were coming from the Peace Corps. All of them, in some form or another, said, yea, it's great, but what skills do you have after you're done? Do you have work skills? Which company? What'd you do? Teach Math to kids? Build houses for the needy? That's really great, but those skills don't translate into working for a corporation. After that, I was turned off.

Oh, I see. Yeah, working an office position isn't really what I want to do afterwards. I want to go to film school when I get back and just have some fun working in the industry somewhere and being poor. I figured going out there somewhere and seeing the rest of the world would help me out there.

Edit: Help me out with movies, not being poor. Maybe both, I donno.

bring a camera with you, shoot everything, make a documentary.

win/win a bit different expectations than the corporate world, which with all due respect could give two shits about the human condition

Yea, like giving someone a review on time so that said person can get a new coat and not be cold this winter.

Great idea. I've been trying to save up some cash for a good camera... I'll bring it with me if I get to go.

Maybe I could work with the Peace Corps... tell them what I'm doing and it could be a sanctioned documentary that they can use to show potential volunteers Like me what it's like.

My girlfriend's sister and brother-in-law are over in Morocco serving in the Peace Corps. They didn't go straight out of college, she worked for the Chicago Board of Trade for five years prior to leaving, so their situation is a little different than yours.

I've done a lot of traveling in third world countries, but I know for a fact that I could not be isolated from everything I enjoy for 2 1/2 years. It takes a better person then myself.

I don't think It'd have a hard time with it. It'd be a great experience and would probably make me appreciate the things I have here back home when I get back.

Yeah, 2 1/2 years is a big chunck of time, but I'll only be 20 when I graduate. I can't go to any clubs for another year, so what the hell else am I going to do.

Go to shoot poor 3rd world countries with a video camera that'll get stolen as soon as you enter the country?

A friend was in Kosovo(on contract),well its extremely frustrating as you cant really help anyone and all you do is walk around looking important and making sure you dont make enemies(unless you want to be ambushed/killed or simply be sent home because some local chieftain told your commander he doesnt like you),well if you enjoy sex with Slave-prostitutes or children, dont miss the opportunity(Believe it or not some people go there because of this shit).

All i can tell is that you will come back desillusioned and depressed, without even really helping anyone.

Edit:I think we are talking different Peace Corps :) I ment the one that is actually armed

Peace Corps is pretty fucking selfish. You don't really HELP a country, unless you consider trying to destroy the culture "helping." 90% of the time, you'll just be teaching English to students in an underdeveloped country. People do it so they can go to other countries, not to help others.

I just figure I might as well be useful and try and help my fellow man, rather than sit around at home, work, spend money on shit I don't really need and talk on forums.

I'd be documenting the experience, not the people.

From what I know, Peace Corps is like being a missionary without the religion.

Yeah, I suppose so. This is their mission apparently.

n 1961, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship.

Three simple goals comprise the Peace Corps' mission:

1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their needs for trained men and women.

2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.

3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of all Americans.
