Pretty funny :D I lol'ed anyway

They're totally right though - just look at the difference between shots.

People that honestly thought the first wave of next-gen titles would look like that deserve to be disappointed.

The difference is like massive, like that that between a funny comic and PA.

well they shouldn't be sold like they are also...

Yeah, I've learned to set my standards and expectations really low now... :\

I still can't believe most everyone gets suckered by this practice every single generation....on a hardcore gaming forum no less. :lol

Not only it's true but in this comic they can't convey the real disappointment of the new madden - it's animation, which to me looked exactly like the current gen madden.

So far that's how it seems like most next gen games have been. Animation that really doesn't look much better than what we're currently getting this gen. It really doesn't seem like alot of developers even care about getting clean animation.

Well, EA did say they were target renders. Perhaps the target platform was PS3? :lol
They even said it was going to be better than those shots.

Next-gen can wait a while if you ask me.

And, as a friend noticed, many next-gen devs seem more concerned about having TONZ OF SHIT ON SCREEN AT ONCE, to, to show off the raw rendering power of the console.

but did you see the ROCKS in the stadium!?! THE ROCKS!?

Unfortunately it's a heck of a lot easier to do a simple current-gen 3d model of a guy and copy and paste 100 of him walking around than it is to create a very nice looking next-gen character model :(

Yep that, normal mapping and bloom lighting seem to be the 3 favorite features for next gen games at this point. I was just expecting animation to improve greatly over the current gen, but it isn't happening as much as I thought it would. Some next gen games, inlcuding high profile games, have laughably bad animation.

It's because screenshots sell games...animation doesn't

Which is a shame because I know which of the two makes a game better, and it begins with "A" and ends in "nimation"

Would it really look that different if the second shot had the snow and fogging?

Oh yeah. The difference in model detail seems pretty large. The original render target footage also had some amazing animation to go along with the high level of detail. The newer footage animates like the current game and just seemed to add a normal maps to the players and what not. There is a world of difference...

In addition to what's happening on the field, there is also the stadium and crowd to think about.

I agree. I called bullshit (bullflick?) as soon as I saw that teaser commercial during the draft. The game just looks ridiculously un-next-gen.

Coupled with most of the other launch-window screens and vids released thus far, it's as if Microsoft and publishers are going out of their way to tell us that the bun could've spent more time in the oven. I mean, like Tycho said, if it looks this rough two months before launch, why not just keep it to yourselves and hope that blind hype sells it?

No, instead we have shit like Wallguy to argue against a purchase.

I'm talking about the screenshot though. I'm not see a huge difference in the model except that the giants player is in a more action oriented pose.

But which is more important when you're playing? How it runs, or how it looks? The render looked better, IMO, but - more importantly - it was also so much smoother and more fluid. That's closer to what I'd expect from next-gen animation, not what EA have shown with their game

Really?

Precipitation aside, the amount of detail in the pre-rendered shot is exponentially greater than the real-time screenshot. The helmet, wrinkles in the uniform, lighting, facial components...all vastly different.

Never mind the huge differences in animation quality between the two.

It is kind of bullshot though ... because casuals pick up the latest EGM and then pre-order the 360 because that is what they think the nextgen will be like.

The marketing assholes are off the hook, because Madden WILL look like that. Madden 2009.

So the Xbox 360 Madden doesn't look as good as what we were seeing before. That's the basic jist right? I don't follow Madden, sorry.

I think that was a really good comic and I like the "bullshot" phrase.

I didn't get suckered, I just can't believe the balls EA had to lie to people to that extent. Either they blatantly lied or they really really suck and completely missed their target. Neither one makes the company look good.

Yeah, that's about right.

I don't really follow it myself, but the original teaser was extremely impressive and I was always curious to see how close they could come to matching it. They didn't perform very well...

The original teaser was extremely impressive looking, both in terms of actual detail and animation.

The video that we very recently were shown, however, appeared to be nothing more than current gen Madden with updated models and lots of normal mapping. A large difference.

The pics are blurry, but the video clearly shows how different it looks. The model isn't too far off, it seems, but everything else is pretty awful. Bad lighting, no self shadowing, and other obvious reductions...

Not really a fair comparison, but here is NFL2k5 on the XBOX...

Yes not even CLOSE. My friends who are football players are local Uni's called me about the commercial saying "OMG! LOOK AT THE AWSOMENESS OF THE NEXT GEN MADDEN!" I just laughed and told them it's not going to look like that, they just kept boasting about it, now they're all eat a whole lot of crow.

Took the words right out of my mouth--but with Nathkenn stating they're the same models...

Hrrm. I mean, I can see similarities here and there, but can texture and lighting work that much magic as to make the BK video's NFL 2K5 look turn into the "target" look?

edit: agreeance with the posts above me

i just notice something and it is fuckin bothering me now....... why the fuck is the jersey shining like a motherfucker?! shit when i go out my clothes doesn't shoot uv light rays and cause skin cancer.

To be fair the Eagles Unis can be pretty shiny.

"it's the same model."

What happened to "it will look better"?

Sorry but they are not even close. The clothing alone makes a huge difference. Look at how the jerseys deform in the render. The real-time version is not even close.

The model can still be the same but with different animation and shaders. The lighting and shadowing also are clearly different (read: much worse).

I think EA only has itself to blame for these reactions. Everyone has learned by now to be sceptical of early tech demos and such but the EA wankers promised everyone that the final game wouldn't just match those visuals but exceed them. Some people were fooled by those promises.

The new model's face actually looks more like McNabb then the target render. I'll wait to see a higher res version of the video from EA before I call bs.

That may be so, but that does not make it technically more impressive.

I mean, this almost looks like a real face...
