Perfect Dark Xbox Showcase 2024 Gameplay was fake, according to Kotaku sources (UP: dev who worked on the game has debunked the claim)

Since they never showed fable again i'm gonna assume it's in the same situation and we just saw a fake trailer. Unless they're saving it for gamescom but i dont really see it. If they had something to show, they would have already.

The game was in development for years until, at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, Microsoft shared the first gameplay video of Perfect Dark, which undoubtedly looked very good.

However, today with the cancellation of Perfect Dark, a Kotaku journalist noted that this video released at the event was in fact a fake, although he didn't go into specific details:

What was even the point my goodness.

Technically it was presented as a vertical slice, which is supposed to be a small polished portion of an otherwise very early on development title, running in-engine.

But the problem is games now have such good in-engine cutscene systems, which pretty much render FMV obsolete, so the line between what is considered real and fake is blurry.

In this case it looks like it's an in-game cutscene made to resemble gameplay, so it has hud elements, shown from the first person etc, and yet the animations, effects and gameplay look incredibly scripted - likely made specifically for that "gameplay" cut-scene, the cut scene might be all that even exists

At this point i'm surprised how Fable wasn't canceled yet.
More than Fable, how State of Decay 3 survived all this.

I think there's still time.

Ninja Theory might go in the next rounds once they're done porting Hellblade 2 to PS5. Similar to how Tango was treated.

And if State of Decay 3 does not show up within the next 7 months (until the Xbox Jan. 2026 Direct) and make a splash, then it's probably dead as well, along with Undead Labs studio.

I was mildly excited for it. The first perfect dark is a really great game that I loved back then. I still listen to the soundtrack here and there. It's a damn shame the ip went to Ms.

I feel sorry for the laid-off developers,

but how have they earned a salary for 7 (!) years

and not created a single game?!

nah, Fable is save. it's made by basically the only internal Xbox studio (as in Non-Activision/Non-Bethesda) that still makes quality games.

playground games is basically Microsoft's only trusted dev team at this point.

I wish I had your level of optimism. Five years of development and a release date supposedly in 2026 and all we've seen is about 2 minutes of heavily curated pre-Alpha footage. Most of which they only showed us 4 months ago.

For one franchise: Forza Horizon. The longer they spend time on Fable, the further out the next Forza Horizon gets pushed. Forza Horizon is an undoubtedly bigger property and money maker than a reboot of a property that hasn't had an entry in 12 years.

I wouldn't be shocked, at all, if Microsoft cancels Fable later on and pushes Playground to get Forza Horizon 6 done and polished ASAP.

the recent PS5 port of Horizon 5 probably was done to extend its lifecycle.
so I don't think Microsoft is super stressed to release a new one.

I also bet that there's already a separate team at Playground that are already deep into Forza Horizon 6 development.
Fable could be further along than it seems imo. but it's hard to judge

Possibly, but that makes me ponder something else: I wonder if releasing on PlayStation reset the licensing timing agreements with the automotive manufacturers.

If not, and it follows past licensing trends, FH5 will be delisted somewhere in 2027 over licensing.

When I played perfect dark zero 360 it was standard fps, looked at nice graphics, this is standard spy fps, best case scenario IOI Hitman team could give us a perfect dark.

I remember early back when wukong trailer come out and nearly everyone was skeptical and claim it was fake and vaporware.

Now see which one come out true.

L western devs

Many of us have called out the demo trailer as fakedly scripted. Just go back to the reveal thread. You cant smoke us elite gamers who have been around as long, if not longer, than Phil

I hate when projects are announced way too early when the dev team doesn't have anything to show and you either do a CGI trailer or fabricate fake gameplay. I'm guessing it's done to satisfy shareholders and/or subscribers, but it also leads to a huge disappointment when the actual game looks very different or isn't released at all.

The dev didn't debunk anything. He actually confirmed that it was fake. He is only arguing that it was not 100% fake.

Otherwise, what does "the hacking/deception is mostly real" even mean? What's "mostly real."

Also, the footage said "in-game footage". The dev confirmed it wasn't in-game, but it was "in-engine." The Witcher 4 PS5 demo was "in-engine." It is not real.
