SEGA and Atlus have officially confirmed that Persona5: The Phantom X, the new free-to-play installment in the long-running Persona franchise, will release globally on June 26, 2025. This game has been available in China through Perfect World Games since April 2024.

About

Set in a Tokyo where human desires have vanished, the game builds on the foundation of Persona 5 while branching off with its distinct implementations. Players control a brand-new protagonist who navigates school life by day and explores cognitive dungeons by night.

Further, a new band of Phantom Thieves steps up, each with their own stories and Personas. While this cast is the central collective facet, returning characters like Joker and the original Thieves will appear via special in-game contracts.

The core loop still leans into the signature coalescence of turn-based combat, daily time management, and relationship-building that the modern Persona games are known for. Players can balance part-time jobs and extracurricular clubs with dungeon runs and combat trials.

Several new gameplay additions, including a PvE combat mode called The Velvet Trials and expanded side content through a Synergy System, will also be available. These mechanics allow players to unlock original side stories written and supervised by Atlus, strengthening bonds with new and returning characters. NPC events and other side stories will also be viewable.

Moreover, Guild features let players interact in-game. New palaces and Mementos refresh dungeon design, while NPC-focused events provide further opportunities to explore the vast cast. Mini-games add additional variety to the student life segments.

Just found this good FAQ from Tenacity (a day 1 P5X player). This should help answer most of the questions about this Persona 5 spin-off gacha game. Keep in mind some of the terms used here may be changed in Global as part of localization

1. What is this? Is this Persona 6?

No it's not. It's a spinoff P5 game called Persona 5: The Phantom X. It's a gacha game that has been out in CN/TW/KR for over a year now, and a Global/JP release is finally coming.

2. Who is working on P5X?

P5X is being developed by both Black Wings Game (a subsidiary of Perfect World Games) and ATLUS/P-Studio. It is being directed by Yusuke Nitta, who previously worked on P5R/S/T.

3. What is P5X about?

P5X features an entirely new cast in an alternate world parallel to P5(R)'s one, which diverged from the original timeline due to a starting point/event. It's set in a world where people are rapidly losing their "desires".

4. How does the gacha in this game works?

You roll for characters and their weapons. However, none of their related story contents like their Synergy (this game's version of Confidants) are locked behind the gacha.

Most of the characters you pull for are not actually real Phantom Thieves, but are rather referred to as Kaidols, taken from Kaitou (Phantom Thief) + Idol. They are PT cognitive versions that are created by Merope (this game's Velvet Attendant).

They also do not use normal Personas, but instead Persona IIs (pronounced Persona Duo).

Additionally, there are two systems (You can pick either to pull on): a 80 pity system with 50/50 and a 110 system with no 50/50 at all. Soft pity starts at 70 for both systems. You can check out a more detailed and informative breakdown here.

5. How does the calendar system work?

Every real life day, you get 5 Energy Points ingame, which you can use to do city activities like in regular P5. There are also items to gain extra EPs. An ingame day is divided into 5 time slots, and every activity takes up 1 time slot.

6. How does Confidant/Synergy work?

It works very similarly as in normal Persona games. You hang out with them when they pop up in your schedule to progress their Synergy. Every Synergy has 20 ranks, but about half of them aren't actually story content.

However, this also mean that you need to do a lot more hangouts than in regular Persona games, but you also have no time limit to do them. Therefore, not ranking up after a hangout is not considered a bad thing.

7. How far in is the story right now?

Currently, we are on Arc 4 and the 5th Palace on CN/KR/TW. Global/JP may or may not start with this.

8. What's basic gameplay like?

Every character has an Awareness 0, which is that character's core mechanic tied to their kit. They also have 3 active skills each and 2 passive skills. Additionally, they also have a HIGHLIGHT/Theurgy, which is essentially their ultimate skill.

9. What's the meta like?

I personally think this game's meta is fairly healthy, because most characters have a specific niche that they fit into, and there often aren't many overlaps. Most standard characters are also very powerful and are staples in current top tier teams.

That is all.

Final Fantasy levels of milking a title
Pretty sure Persona 5 has more releases, re-releases, and spin-offs than Final Fantasy's worst offender, VII

Final Fantasy wishes it got milked as much as Persona 5 has been lol

I'm not sure what's more milked nowadays: Persona 5 or FFVII lol.

I hate Sega's current strategy of turning all their big franchises into slop of themselves -- in this case, Persona 5, but same thing was true of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

Not sure I understood your post but Pirate Yakuza is actually a good game and not some spin-off gacha

Persona 5 is probably a top 5 game for me, but I have no interest in this. I'll poke my head out when Persona 4 and Persona 6 come out, but this? Yeah, who cares. Reminds me of all the shit Square Enix was doing with FF7. It's ultimately a waste of resources and time.

As always, no dub = no buy. Like they haven't made enough money off of P5 to bring in some voice actors? Just cheap / lazy, like the whole thing looks.

Persona 5 is one of my fav games, strikers was good too, but this is a pass.

No eng dub and the phantom thieves B team? No thanks

How long is this anyway?

It's a gacha game, so they'll keep adding new story content through regular patches.

Actually, let me edit my second post with an FAQ I saw from a veteran P5X user. That should answer most of the questions.

Edit: Done. Check it out!

From what I understand after watching reviews, it's just a very long version of P5 and by long I mean everything takes x2 times longer etc. plus there's a gacha system and you can't save scum to get better personas.

Can't say much about the story cuz I skipped that part, but if it's good and at least on par with the original game, I think it's worth playing just for that and characters of course. Also, there's no P5S on the timeline but it also counts, the thing about it though is that it's unrelated to what P5R did for the game and is tied to original version of the game.

Just cleared all the pre-reg milestones today. You can still grab the rewards even if you can't pre-register for it (like on Steam).

Sorry bro, but if I play this I'll be accepting demon designs being cesored and who knows, maybe next time I'll play an SMT game Jack Frost will be wearing jeans and trust me, that's a future I don't want for anybody nor myself.

Atlus has milked Persona 5 to the point it seems no one cares anymore. Wonder how much more they will try and milk it

As long as this game's data won't be tied to an Atlus account, so data will be saved across all platforms, this is DOA for me.

It's always interesting to see the disconnect between "enthusiast" forums and mobile games. I personally hate gachas but 1.5 million.... Even if most of those won't stick around that's impressive.

No EN dub, btw. Also, only EN and JP subs + UI.

I mean who wants to deal with English VAs? Isn't Genshin in the middle of redubbing some characters cause of the drama with their VAs?

Being currently playing Persona 5, reading this sounds absolutely terrible, but of course they would do that.

That's what I hate the most in Free to play games. It's not the gacha pulls, it's the "you HAVE to log in and play a bit everyday". I really don't like being forced to play and follow a specific schedule. Like for Persona 5, it's such a long game that sometimes I drop it for a few weeks, and then when I feel like it, I come back to it and will play it for 30 hours a week lol But I can't do that when the game has this F2P design and wants you to only play a specific amount of time per day. I really prefer being able to manage my play time on my own.
