PES 2018 Demo Impression

until last year the pc version was always the inferior one compared to the console versions, and i heard nothing about this changing this year..and the lack of a demo before it comes out is the cherry on top of that
If you "heard nothing about this changing" then sorry, you didn't read anything about the game, or even the posts in this thread. They've said since launch it's the same version as PS4, with PC enhancements (4K, 21:9, Nvidia Ansel). The lack of a demo has also been explained multiple times right here in this thread.

gameplay is looking good but the graphics, why?

They decided to implement some kind of early-XBone "pop filter" that dramatically increases sharpness and black levels, looks goddamn awful. Hopefully it gets patched by the time the full game releases or at least include a toggle in there ffs.

Overall I am liking the demo but the spacing issues and tactics assigned to some of these teams are causing issues, Dortmund tactics are so garbage and you can't even change them.

Eh, what if you're not interested in the gameplay? Like, what if you're more interested in seeing official t-shirts than you are in the gameplay for example?! What does PES have for you?!
If you buy on PS4 or PC there's option files that fix that. One click 2 minute fix on PC, an automatic ~10 minute import from a USB stick on PS4. It's really not an issue unless you buy on XB1, in which case, blame Microsoft.

I feel like this gets brought up ever year Paul. :(

Agreed, its much uglier than 2017 on ps4 :/

Not feeling this one to be honest. It's better than some of the previous ones.

Doesn't seem to have the off the cuff moments and varied outcomes that the PS2 games had. I got bored playing this demo. The crowd noises could do with some variety as well, if you're going to include a loud ooohhhh then at least switch it up.

After playing 6 matches, I'm disappointed with it. It just feels 'off'.

The majority of shots still look and feel awful and the dribbling doesn't feel as fluid or responsive as I want it to be. I don't feel like I'm in control of the football thus feeling a disconnect and as a result, a goal doesn't feel like an achievement. It just doesn't feel satisfying scoring a goal.

On the plus side, the passing is great. You can't just ping pong it. It's slow, considered and most importantly it's a challenge. You need to concentrate which is great. Also, unlike last year, the attacking AI on the top difficulty is a challenge again.

I'll play some more of it and hope it grows on me.

Seeing that PES 2018 is dirt cheap on PC right now I am definitely buying it today. So guess I'm getting all three football games (FIFA, PES, FM) this year.

This. I've havent played a PES since 2012 but seeing now that I have a PC, I decided to buy the premium edition for $33 on CDKeys a few days ago.

Don't know if this camera angle when you're entering the box was available in previous PES, but it took me by surprise.

Doesn't look that useful to me, but it was nice to look at.

Played 3 superstar matches, the game is great, dribbling feels awesome heres some footage:

Dunno why but it can feel a little on the easy side, have yet to lose a match on superstar and some of the goals received have felt reaaaally cheap, like impossible to defend cheap. Love what ive played though :)

I'm very concerned by the amount of goals I'm both scoring and conceding on this demo.

So far I've had games finish up 4-3, 3-2, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4 and 6-3.

Bumped myself up to Top Player and still having the same outcomes.

As I said before, usually when I play the demos for both games I struggle to score at first and end up with tighter games.

Can't put my finger on why. I don't feel goalkeepers are any worse than last year. I think it's the through ball, which feels OP as fuck.

Feels more like Fifa, and that's not a compliment.

The entire game has been slowed down - both players' movement (which is acceptable) and the speed at which the ball moves when passed or shot (which is not).

PES 2017 was so much fun because it was end to end action - you were able to absolutely ping the ball all over the pitch and just fucking hare after it. This one is clearly going for a more realistic 'midfield battle' type of game where short passing in the middle is as important as it actually is, but it's no fun to me. And when I can't make my player perform a hard through ball through the middle because he hits it so weakly, and that's clearly purely to stop the through-ball meta, then that's no fun to me.

If I wanted a slow, dull game that actually looks like real football (which is of course slow and dull itself) then I'd play Fifa. I'll put in some more games but right now it's not what I want.

PS: I've actually went ahead and preordered the PC version this year, gotta give kudos for the (at last) engine upgrade.

2017 was terrific

This is pretty much the opposite of what I've found.

My success rate with through balls has got to be well over 90% so far. I've seen the back 4 literally stop, allow my striker to casually stroll beyond them, then resume again, after hitting the through ball.

I think it feels broken, honestly. Far too easy to get through the back 4 with a through ball.

It's like we played different demos. My players would weakly prod the ball through the defence, often with the outside of their foot, and there was never any pace on it no matter how long I held the button.

I was Liverpool playing against Dortmund if that matters.

In PES 2017 your defender could zip an-inch perfect ball through the entire team that would slow perfectly before the box. It was absurd but it was glorious. Defenders are much weaker players in this game, their touch has obviously been nerfed.

Seems like you are ready for superstar difficulty, i havent lost a game on that difficulty but i rarely score more than 3 goals, and pretty much never finish a game with a clean sheet

I do know what you mean. I've seen a lot of through balls with the outside of the boot although generally when I've been playing them out wide.

Can't say I've noticed the pace of the balls being off as such? Will keep an eye out. As I say, either way they've been hitting their target with worrying ease.

Funnily enough I just played my first game on Superstar. Through balls definitely less effective. Still drew 2-2 but it was a good game. This might be the ticket.

I must say though I'm never a fan when you have to "trick" the game into feeling right just by playing the top difficulty. For me a sign that things aren't right and are definitely off.

Hopefully they improve the balance on release, the game felt super challenging on superstar on the coop beta, but thats because people dont know X is for passing apparently.

I've scored more headers in about five games from this demo than all of FIFA '17. It's cool being able to score them but it's definitely needs some tweaking.

Just played one match until now but it seems the king is will continue among us.

Liked especially the cursor change preview and the new corner kicks

Played my mate in a few games of the demo the a few games of Fifa 17.

Really enjoyed the demo.

Main thing i notice is Fifa feels a lot more physical. I dont get the same feeling of pull, pushing , strength jostling in PES.

But in FIFA i find games to end up more scrappy. I dont like the pace of fifa 17.

PES shooting feels great and i like the pace.

Will wait to try Fifa 18 demo. Hated the shooting in 17. Games turn into slug fest and boring. PES feels more like football to me.

FIFA 18 is a lot, lot better. When I was playing it a few of went 'well, seems like they played some PES last year.'

After the 18 Beta ended its been hard going back to 17.

Mine were 2-0 and 1-0. I must suck shit :p

If im looking at mostly playing Master League and maybe dabbling a bit in MyClub (although I seen to burn out on that fairly quickly every year) is there any reason to not get the PC version over the PS4 version. PC can be had for ~$33 from CDKeys vs $50 for the physical version after the GCU discount. I assume editing is easier on PC and I have a 1070 so I could run it on my 4K tv at that res @60 fps. Short of maybe player count is there anything the PS4 version offers that PC lacks?

Edit: Well looks like I'm going with the PC version. I was able to snag the deluxe edition (which I think is the FC Barcelona edition) for $31 with a 5% off coupon at CDKeys.

Really enjoying this demo now.

My issues with the frantic scorelines and overpowered through balls have both been addressed by playing at Superstar difficulty. As I said previously I never like it when a game only becomes optimal at the top difficulty, but I guess I can live with it.

Will be buying.

Since when had diving been in PES?!

Is that a confirmed new "feature"?

Just seen Neymar take an outrageous tumble in the box and get booked for it.

That animation does not look realistic at all. Its like if Messi is floating on the pitch.

The biggest problem I have with PES is the animation. It just feels so arcade. Nothing wrong with it if you like to play arcade football, but I tend to prefer FIFA. It feels more realistic.

I wish that I could play ISS2 again. That was so good, and it was arcade as h*ck.

But PES now, year after year it is the inferior one for me.

I agree. Something just doesn't feel right when in possession.

Manual diving was a feature in the old days on PS2. You could press down three shoulder buttons and dive lol.

Really? I played those religiously too. Every day is a school day.

Even so, did the AI ever do it? I can't recall EVER seeing the AI take a dive and get carded for it in any other football game. Wish I'd recorded it. Watch it be one of those things I never see again. Perhaps I dreamt it..

amazing demo... graphics and animations are much better, but everything is improve... i love pes, but i cant believe how good this is...

Really, really disappointed with this demo. The game just isn't fun to play. It's nowhere near as good as 2015 and 2017.

- Players all feel sluggish and heavy. There's no fluidity in movement, they don't feel fast or agile at all, like there's a thick fog on the pitch that they're wading through. Aubameyang doesn't feel zippy or fast in the slightest. It feels like there's input lag and players react slightly too late.
- Players all feel the same for some reason. It doesn't feel like there's any difference between them, whether speed or technical skill.
- Your teammate AI is plain stupid. A loose ball pops up a metre or two away and they stand there, not moving. There's no intelligence in covering positions, making runs or anything whatsoever. Not only is it frustrating but it breaks the illusion of a real football match because no professional player worth his salt acts like that on a pitch.
- Feels like there's no weight to shooting. It's hard to put into words but shooting and scoring a goal doesn't feel like an event, and it doesn't feel like you've lashed a ball into the back of a net. It feels like a damp squib.
- Goalkeepers are inconsistent and unrealistic again. They save shots that look unsaveable (and in replays the shots are already behind them before they miraculously tip them to the side) but some that are right beside them go in. The animations also look really weird and reused from past years.
- I've forgiven a lot of UI and UX things over the years but it feels like there are some simple, basic things that need to be changed that haven't, and it's super frustrating. Why does only one player kick off? Who does that? How come when I press pause, I can't immediately see which player has scored? Why is that not immediately presented to me, instead of reams of useless information? How come at the end of a match I can't choose a specific goal highlight to watch, instead of trawling through a shitty reel of 'highlights'? There are so many basic things that need fixing that haven't been touched in four years!
- Very minor nitpick but why can't I change formation in this demo?

Hoping that the finished product plays a lot better than this demo because frankly this plays pretty shit.
