Peter Jackson Details the 4K Remastering of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

Kind of glad I skipped these on blu-ray. I may pick up the LOTR someday. I certainly don't need The Hobbit in 4k, especially if they still don't have a high frame rate version.

I have both the hobbit and lord of the rings On 4k the hobbit trilogy has 1 disk for each cut,and lord of the rings has 3,2 for the extended cuts They have no extras at all.

I'm just hope he is still in the mood. Don't know what his future projects are and what WB has planned for him. But maybe the lockdowns and such comes to fruition for once.

After the WWI doc he made a Beatles doc for Disney that got delayed from this past September to 2021. But at the same time they did the LOTR and naughty restorations.

They won't even stream it, will they? The high frame rate version in 4K on my internet connection would be the equivalent of climbing Mount Doom.

Saw Hobbit movies lord of the ring movies on release I’m sure remakes blue ray 4K versions will give them edge but what about 10 years from today? Ok are we gonna opt to release new versions again? Yes. It’s such a great franchise and remakes seems easy to them.

Actually a bit disappointed that they didn't redo any of the CG, a lot of that stuff REALLY doesn't hold up anymore. But maybe the retouching will be good enough.

This so much - even when i first saw return of the king some of the vfx shots were brutal! They look like total ass now. Its a shame because theyre some really nice vfx so its odd that just a couple got the shit end of the stick.

Fellowship is an all time movie for me. Top 5 I'd say. They rest are good but nothing touches FOTR. I'll take any excuse to rewatch

Has anybody here seen the movies in 4k? What's your honest opinion about the image quality? Because judging by trailers and static screencaps they look very 1k to me : /

I need to say I have the bluray edition of the trilogy, and except Fellowship of the Ring, that I believe it was remastered at the time for the bluray edition, the other two look like a upscale DVD. Same as the Alien Quadrilogy, where the best looking one is the first movie because it was remastered.

So, even I love the films, today I watched these trailers and they looked (for me) more or less as a normal bluray. Better than the original bluray edition but not as real 4k.

YouTube is fooling me or what we can see in the trailers is the real image quality? I saw the trailers in a LG CX, by the way.

ROTK was the film where Jackson started to go full retard with overdoing effects.

Fellowship has timeless visuals. ( I literally just watched it)

are people itt unironically complaining that he's not pulling a george lucas and not pointlessly redoing cgi

They could have rerendered it with more modern lighting, better materials and shaders, etc, to make it look more natural, without fully redoing it.

Lucas didn't redo CG, he added it where it wasn't needed.

Yeah, Fellowship is one of the most perfect movies ever made, if not the most perfect (referring to the theatrical version). The Two Towers gets kind of slow in the middle, and Return of the King has a few silly parts, but those are still two fantastic movies.

Someone already told me they're getting me the LOTR set for Christmas. Can't wait to watch it on my PS5...

WETA rescanned the entire negative in 4K. They also rescanned all of the VFX shots in 4K and upscaled the ones that were in 2K. From there they created a new 4K Digital Intermediate.

I don't know what you want them to do other than travel back in time and re-film the movies with modern 6K cameras or something. Hell back then they wanted to do it all in 4K but it would cost too much and at the time it wasn't possible to do in New Zealand.

This is the release that has motivated me to invest in a 4K projector. Looking at the BenQ HT3550. Will be a glorious day once I have my new room set up and the boxed set in my hands.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
Got my set tonight. Watched first hour of Fellowship (extended).

So far so good. Shire scenes look amazing. Some close ups make it look like there is a bit of detail lost with DNR but not to the extent it's so obvious and gross like many others. Will watch the rest throughout the week and weekend.

Redoing the CGI is a never ending rabbithole, see Lucas' attempts at redoing the OT for example.

I know they did that, but my question is how it looks when you see the result. Because trailers doesn't look like as, for example, Alien 1 or Psychosis remastered, where you can see easily the improve.

Have you seen the 4k blurays? What's your opinion?

I insist because, at least here, the price of the 4k pack is 140€! And it's too much money to buy for third time if the improve is not enough.

Yes? The CGI from LoTR is low rez. Have you ever seen Jurassic Park in 4k? It looks super weird when the CGI creatures obviously have lower resolution that the rest of the picture.
No ones asks from them to pull a Lucas and make it worse but to adapt the CGI to the current possibilities. See it like this... What Lucas did was a Remake, what we want for these converts is a remaster.
