Actually a bit disappointed that they didn't redo any of the CG, a lot of that stuff REALLY doesn't hold up anymore. But maybe the retouching will be good enough.
This. Watching these movies now looks like you're watching a cheaply assembled montage.. they're really not far removed from Mandalore Gaming's surrogate scenes in his Return of the King video

Rewatched FOTR. God I love this movie. I think I'm not alone preferring the theatrical cut. The intro to the shire has all these dumb little bullshit inclusions that fuck with the vibe, pacing, and scoring. The only thing I like is the extra arrow shots legolas does. Wish they gave the theatrical cuts the same attention

Wait, the theatrical cuts did not get the same treatment?

Look, PJ and WB. I'll forget the Hobbit trilogy ever happened if you can get one more middle-earth story on screen.

I don't remember the theatrical cuts well enough to directly compare them to the extended editions. I enjoyed the latter, but I feel some scenes such as Aragorn at his mother's grave and his talk with Boromir in Lothlorien were an uncessary departure from the books, feeling very much like fan-fiction. I could be wrong, but I think they added a few scenes of the Fellowship travelling across various landscapes that really added to the sense of adventure.

I would like to see these editions but that price is a bit steep this close to Christmas.

Looks like they boosted the colours and sharpened the original trilogy to make it look like it was shot on digital

Gonna get both collections, first LotR than the Hobbit. The trailers look great. I want to revisit the Hobbit the most, since I didn't really like them back when it released. Desolation of Smaug was very good but the two others was kinda meh.

I hope my feelings have softened through the years because they all seem to be good fun adventures, while not quite capturing the original trilogies quality. But few things do, OG Lord of the Rings are masterpieces.

PJ will go down in history for that accomplishment. Truly works of art. Looking forward to 4K Braindead too with behind the scenes footage. It's my favorite movie of Jacksons pre-Lord of the Rings era together with Heavenly Creatures.

I wish I had 4K Blu-Ray player. I will definitely buy LOTR and King Kong 4K BDs when I get one. I have no desire to watch The Hobbit movies again. They weren't good.

so is it worth buying?

i've only ever owned Fellowship on VHS and Two Towers on DVD when they first came out. I see iTunes has the 4K versions. i don't have a blu ray player so need to buy digital.
