Peter Sallis (Wallace from Wallace and Gromit) dies aged 96

Broken Joystick

At least you can talk. Who are you?
Maybe not as well known outside the UK, but Sallis was the voice for Wallace in the Wallace and Gromit films, and the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine.

The actor was best known for appearing in Last of the Summer Wine and was also famous as the voice of Wallace in Wallace and Gromit.

His agent confirmed he died peacefully with his family by his side.

Sallis played Norman "Cleggy" Clegg in Last of the Summer Wine from its first episode in 1973 until the series concluded in 2010.

He was the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes of the sitcom.

He was also in Doctor Who where he had in a big part in the very first Ice Warriors story.

96 is a great run for anybody, though.

Oh no :(

His voice will always bring me joy, as a huge Aardman fan. But it seems that even in his old age, he still kept rather active in his role as Wallace.

May you have many cheese and crackers in the afterlife.

A great loss! The guy who subs for Wallace's voice doesn't sound *quite* right.

May Peter be going down a big hill in a bath with Compo and Foggy in the great beyond.

Sorry to see him go, and I think with him we lost the last of the original cast members; Ivy died a couple of months ago, as well.

Wonder if Nick Park should retire Wallace? They've got a very competent alternative who's voiced him when Sallis has been unavailable, so the character could live on.

It's nice that he lived as long. Nobody can avoid death anyway so that's the best case scenario.

The sad news is when someone dies in his 60's or earlier.

For 5 years I had a Wallace and Gromit alarm clock that would wake me up with 'Morning Gromit, time for walkies'. I sometimes still hear it in my brain. Great actor, nice chap. Good innings.

Lived a good, long life... but fuck if this doesn't hurt like hell.

Wallace & Gromit was one of the cornerstones of my childhood. I broke a built-in VHS television because I kept watching and rewinding the Wrong Trousers. I've got Project Zoo on my game shelf, and the Telltale games in my library (yes, I know he didn't provide the voice in them). Damn it, I still have books and a Gromit soap holder.

I may need to lie down a bit.

One of my favourite voices in animation; Wallace and Gromit wouldn't have been anywhere near as classic without him. RIP.

Damn I had no idea he was that old.

I grew up on Wallace & Gromit and even saw the film opening night in theaters! I don't know how big they were stateside but I remember the film getting good press...

All the more impressive, since he's the only vocal performance in the first two shorts. Carried the whole thing in an incredibly memorable way. Glad that he had such a long career.

Sad news. I grew up watching the Wallace and Gromit shorts with my dad as well as Last of the Summer Wine which is about as Yorkshire of a TV program to have ever existed. He had the voice and wit of a generation and will be missed.
